Jeollnam is not part of EPIK...Why????
« on: May 27, 2011, 12:40:09 PM »
Does anyone have any information about this?  I prefer to come teach in Jeollnam Province, but is it OK, reliable?  It was part of EPIK last semester, and now it is not.  If I come there, will I be treated as well as I was when I was with EPIK?
Thanks for any info....

In Jeolla we have the JLP program which is almost exactly the same as EPIK. Get in touch with Canadian Connections to help you find a position. You will be treated very well and it is reliable.

And I understand you spend most of the breaks doing paid camps.   No thanks.

this is my second year in jeollnado, its good here, the contract is based on the EPIK one, at least thats what im told.
Canadian Connections are the main recruiter for JLP but they can be slow organising things (in my experience) so don't be afraid to call them and hurry things along like that 8)

Canadian Connections is a good company.  (Thumbs up to Shane and Company) No worries.

Nice province too.  Teaching community there is close knit, fun and kind.

Vacation time (real time) varies by school and if you are lucky can be quite decent at public.

Downside (maybe) it's not a big exciting city type place but a bus is always nearby to solve that.

Only elementary teachers do.
This is a crisis. A large crisis. In fact, if you got a moment, it's a twelve-story crisis with a magnificent entrance hall, carpeting throughout, 24-hour portage, and an enormous sign on the roof, saying 'This Is a Large Crisis'.

JLP is not part of EPIK because they had trouble recruiting teacher's to the area.  So they started their own language program with increased vacation time and pay in order to attract teachers.  And teaching the camps isn't bad.  Usually a little extra pay, good lunches, and you get to go home just after lunch instead of sitting around all day deskwarming.

While the pay and vacation are a little higher, I have not received any additional pay for camps. There are opportunities for additional work with additional pay, but not from camps in my experience. Deskwarming is also up to the individual school. Our contracts technically require it.

I worked for Jeollanam-do last year, and this year I am with EPIK in Jeollabuk-do.
My contract both last year and this year clearly state that it is mandatory to teach a summer and winter camp if your school chooses to, which can be up to two weeks. If it exceeds two weeks ask for extra pay. There are a lot of different contracts out there so review it. However, I was offered over a mil to do an extra week in the winter! Jeollanamdo is reliable and their orientations were awesome. Not saying I don't like EPIK, but I have a lot more trouble getting a vacation this year. Hope this helps! GO KIA TIGERS!

Technically Gwangju is it's own city-state, not a part of Jeollanamdo. This may be why there are some EPIK contracts there.
