EPIK pro-rata rate
« on: May 22, 2012, 01:46:23 PM »
'Ello.

My contract finishes on the 8th of June. EPIK payday is on the 25th, as I'm sure many of us know. My co-teacher tells me I'll be paid pro-rata for the work I do after payday (8 working days with the holiday). Does anyone know how they pro-rata it? Divide salary by the number of working days? Or the number of overall days? My school is pretty stingy - they're always trying to cheat me out of stuff, just little amounts of money - so I imagine they'll want to divide it by the total number of days in the month. Anyone got any experience with this situation? (I started back in 2008 when you could begin a contract in the middle of a semester.) Cheers.

It would be four weeks X 40hrs or 160hrs. Take your pay and divide it into 160 parts. Multiply those by the number of hours you worked. so 8 days at 8hrs a day is 64 hrs.

Add any overtime you work (i.e. over 8hrs a day and/or after 5pm)

Cheers - although I've just spoken to my co-teacher and they're saying it's my monthly wage divided by 30! I'm trying to make the point but I think I'm out of luck. Unless I get the Labour Board involved..?

That's the way they do it in Asia. Getting the LB involved will only guarantee you will be leaving on bad terms.
The Ks once gave me five minutes notice. I didn't know what to do with the extra time.

Was your first pay packet pro-rated?

If not, then 25th of May should be your last pay.  No pro-rating at all.

I assume it was (it was four years ago); my school is so tight they'd definitely have told me if it wasn't. Needless to say I'm not going to ask them to check.

I could honestly not care less about that happening.

Don't you have your own records?  A bank book, for example?

If they want to take the monthly wage and divide by 30, then they need to include the weekends and holiday days as well, otherwise it is obviously unfair -- you normally don't work 30 days a month (I'm hoping).

If they are counting holiday days and weekend, then taking your monthly wage and  dividing it by 30 seems okay to me.

But why would I check? If I wasn't paid pro-rata, I would lose the pro-rata pay they're going to give me. So why would I make my school aware of that?

You would check because you don't actually know.

If your first pay packet *was* pro-rated then May's pay is not your last pay and you should get pro-rated pay for the few days in June, which you should insist on.

If your first pay packet was *not* pro-rated then May's pay is your last pay.  But, if the school wants to pay you a pro-rated part for June, you should keep your mouth shut.

Of course, if you don't know your financial situation then it's possible you are demanding, or worrying about, something you are not entitled to.  My school did not pro-rate my first paycheck, which is actually much simpler.

Finally, the school will have a formula to use for calculating your pro-rated pay.  They won't simply make something up to stiff you, and we're only talking about a couple of dollars.

Bolded parts explain why I'm going to stay in blissful ignorance. The admin office works very, very hard to make sure I don't get paid a single sen more than they have to give me so I'm not going to help them by scouring my finances from four years ago.

Finally, the school will have a formula to use for calculating your pro-rated pay.  They won't simply make something up to stiff you, and we're only talking about a couple of dollars.

The formula they are using is a month's pay divided by thirty times by the number of total days I'll be working in the new month. The point of contention is that they're using total number of days rather than working days - doing it their way means I come out about W27,000 down compared to if they divided my monthly wage by the number of working days in the month and multiplied it by the number of the same which I actually work into June. No surprise there but it's an amount I can live with.

Thanks to everyone for their input!

Under your system you work 5/20 days or 25%   (there is one national holiday in June and 20 workdays left)
Under the normal system you work 8/30 days or 26.67%
A smart man would take 26.67%, but have it your way.

That's what I said up there, son; the difference is about ₩27,000. Cheers.

If you are really concerned you should check with your regional epik coordinator, they will know the rules and should be able to give you a clear answer.
