Criminal Background Check in Korea
« on: May 22, 2012, 10:42:17 PM »
I've searched and can't find much on this topic. I'm heading back to Canada soon to go to teacher's college. I need a police background check from here to bring with me to Canada. Can anyone give me some direction as to how I go about doing this? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Just go to your local (main) police station. I got one in 2007. It was free (then) and took about 10 minutes. All that was required was my ARC and they took a thumb print.
The Ks once gave me five minutes notice. I didn't know what to do with the extra time.

Get it through the RCMP they have an electronic fingerprinting check it takes about four days. It will need to be less than six months old

It's still free, takes about the same time and all you need is your ARC. I've never had the thumbprint taken and I think they may have stopped doing that a few years ago.

The Korean for the document you want is 범죄경력회보서. I've never had this done myself, but I believe you can have it issued in English.

It's worth re-emphasising that you need to go to a main police station. If you live in a metropolitan city, it'll be the police station for your -gu. In smaller cities, it'll be the city police station. But it is all incredibly easy, especially compared to the insane amounts of time and money required to get the equivalent piece of paper in many of our home countries.

The RCMP can't issue a Korean, criminal record check. Read the OP again.

Extra advice is find what the teacher college wants done.  A CRC may all be well a good but what if they want it notarized, or from from a certain department ala national versus local.  Have you also thought about what their reaction will be with a CRC in a foreign language.  I highly doubt they will understand Korean.  So I am think get it translated.  You need to find out what exact color of red tape they want and how the bow needs to be tied.

Go above what is needed.  Get a CRC done.  Which I think can be done at walking in to and large police station (thing gu rather then dong) Then I would recommend going to you local court house and look around for a (Korean) notary and a translator. Sometime it will be done together.
Please consider adding some info to your "Personal Text"  Like type of school, visa status, county of origin.  These little bits of info can help people help you.

I had to get one a few years ago for a job here in Korea. At the time the officer asked me if I would like it in Korean or English. I chose Korean, but I'm assuming since he asked that they are able to print it in English, so translation may not be an issue.

As others have said, go to the nearest large police station and bring your ARC. Only took about 10 minutes for me, too bad the FBI in America isn't this efficient.
