Bali in July-August
« on: May 23, 2012, 05:50:55 AM »
I was wondering if this was a good place to visit in the high season? I know the weather should be fine, but is it going to be crazy with tourists at this time? Anyone had any experience?

I haven't been before. It is high season though. I am going from Aug 5th - 21st to Bali and also to Nusa Lembongan. I booked my flight in March with Garuda Air. Almost all of my accommodation is also booked too.

My advice - book things as soon as you can! If you're going to be there, give me a shout. I'd like to meet someone who has motorbike/scooter skills :) would be well handy for Bali!

If you don't mind me asking, how much was your round trip ticket when you booked that far in advance???

No not at all.

I paid 1 million all in. Alot, right?

The dates I wanted were coming up as 850,000 without the add ons of baggage, food, drinks and seat choice with Air Asia and that had very late travel times and a stopover in KL.

This flight is direct (7 hrs) gets me in at 4pm at Bali then is a midnight flight arriving at 8am in Seoul. Much better, in my opinion.

Air Asia is a no frills airline. Sometimes, when you've finished with all the add ons its just not worth worrying about the extra 80 quid like.

I was in Bali in February and can only attest to what taxi drivers and my scuba teacher told me and that is that it gets really crowded in the high season.

I used to go to Bali in (Jan. - Feb.) low season and Thailand in (July - Aug.) low season. In both places accomodation is half (or less) the price of high season. Airfare is a lot less expensive too. Yes, the beaches may not be as nice (but a lot less crowded); and there's more rain during low season (I like thunder storms)... but it's never constant and there are nice days as well.

If you can, why not try Thailand in the summer and Bali in the winter?

The Ks once gave me five minutes notice. I didn't know what to do with the extra time.

Hey

I've been to Bali in the low and high season and the difference is truly minimal.  Bali generally seems to be a year round party spot. I don't think there's a better time to go. Although it is almost unbearably hot in the summer, if that helps at all.

If u get a chance go to Padang Padang beach and Oluwatu, scooters are easy to get down there too. There are some decent places to stay right across from the beach in P.P. and more accommodations in Olu. Also the coffee farm is cool.  If you like to or want to learn surfing Kota beach is great for surfing (I was there in Feb. though)   The monkey temple is also cool.

Be sure to only drink bottled water or boiled down water, I speak from experience ;)

Also avoid some of the mandatory stops with a tour guide i.e. silver buying. The art stops are ok though.

Overall fun trip, hope u have a good time.

Oh last thing, be careful about people offering things to smoke/partake in, there is/was a reward for turning in tourists to the 5-0.

I'm also thinking of going to Bali in mid-August, but I only have 8 days off from my hagwon. Think this is enough time to really do Bali?

8 days 'should' be enough time to see a fair bit. It's a relatively small island.

On another note - I'm there from August 5th-21st. If anyone is there during this time and fancies sharing transport costs for mooching around the island, please give me a shout.

Cheers!
