Funny Co-Teacher's Comments
« on: December 24, 2010, 12:28:29 PM »
I ordered 찜닭 (like a chicken stew for those who are unfamiliar) for dinner last night and only finished half. I brought the other half in to enjoy for lunch today.

My CT looked at my bag, asked what was inside, and said, "It seems to me that you are a pig".

Only in Korea!

Don't worry about it. My co teachers always tell me when they don't like my hair style or if I look sleepy. They say things like that here because Koreans are not very sarcastic. If someone said that in the States, in return they would get a sarcastic comment. I always say Thank you when ever they tell me some thing bad. What can you say to that?

I laughed and smiled when she said that. I've been around long enough to know her intentions. What she meant by it was that I had too much food for just one person.

It's funny how things get lost in translation  :P

South Africans will probably understand this one :

My coteacher once took a bite from a cookie and went : 'hmmmm, lekker!'

Ive mentioned one or two Afrikaans words to her before, never thought she would remember them!

She has also used 'sommer' in several sentences...and we all know sommer fits in everywhere! :P

Oh my just realized I might single handedly bring down my schools whole English department with my foreign tongue!

Funny thing I heard mentioned over on Dave's. A young female K-teacher would say to the net "I will ride you" when she meant to say " I will give you a ride home in my car"

This one happened last night at my school's hwae-sik:

My table was playing a drinking game about the Chinese Zodiac symbols.
Basically they would shout the animal and anyone who had that animal would drink.
So when it was the Rooster there was some debate as they were saying the animals in English. My co-teacher corrected the other teachers because they thought that chicken sounded strange and she said the word should be "c*ck" and before I should offer up rooster, the all clinked their glasses and shouted "C*CK!!" I later told them to say rooster for the second round

On my first day in Korea my co-teacher picked me up to take me to my apartment. She didn't say anything for a while, and finally she said "I thought from your pictures you would be very stout. I was surprised".
Nice to meet you too.

I gestured to the craziness that becomes the streets during election time and asked "what is going on?", my co-teacher replied "its for the erections...I mean elections!!" We both giggled all the way down the street

my partner is south african, afrikaans, specifically.  my co-teacher asked me to see a picture of him.  showed it to her.  Following this, her reply was (with a loud gasp and chuckle):

"i dont understand, he's white!!!!"  it was funny.  i explained to her that in SA there are many types of south africans... like in America there are many kinds of americans.

I think I confused her with my background and his combined.  but his whiteness was the topic of conversation for a good month in school.. Africa? White?? no way...  ;D

So, today at lunch, my co-teachers and myself are enjoying our meals. The fire bell suddenly goes off so I ask if this was is a planned drill or if we should proceed outside.

Her reply....

CT: "This is not a planned firedrill. Don't worry, there is no fire."

Me: "How do you know there is no fire?"

CT: "Because there are no carpets in this school."

PRICELESS!

Yesterday I wore the same clothes and makeup I always wear.  The only difference in my appearance was a headband with a bow on it.

"Your bow!  So beautiful!  Today, you look like girl!"

I wore a black skirt and blue shirt one day... "You look like a middle school student!"

A few ajummas in my office were sizing me up one day and they were trying to 'figure out' my body:
"Hmm... you are not fat.... but you are not slim..... hmmmm.... well, little fat, here and here" (touching my boob and hip)....

And my kids will interrupt the lesson to say: "Teacher! Nose! Red!"
..... yes.... it's cold in here....

My bf had a good story from his school the other day, a few kids were asking him to follow them and they were yelling "Teacher! Come on my face!" in the hallway...

Okay, something not limited to my coteachers but I have heard many Koreans do before. The pronunciation of the word sheet. "Can you give a sh*t for today?" One of these days I'll reply "No... But I'll fake it like normal."  ;D

The hot art teacher at my school said that to me too! I was sad to know she meant "give you a ride"
