mahkeolli worship thread
wrinklebump:
this is some legit stuff i found at e-mart of all places -- incredibly good for a widely distributed brand, no artificial sweeteners either

What are your feelings on the mahkeolli fruit cocktail? An interesting way to spice up one of your "5 a day" or a pollution of perfectly good mahkeolli?

fascinating subject really, i typically enjoy the beverage neat because 1) its rather sweet as it is and 2) factory-line fruit juice of the kind employed by the trendy mahk bars doesnt significantly improve the taste. ive made drinks from freshly squeezed juices and enjoyed them though. but due the increased sugar content it then becomes rather difficult to get a buzz on without waking the up the next morning feeling as if you were pounding long islands all night, necessitating more tinkering.
so: when i mix with fruit juice i also like to add a shot or so of 80-proof soju to the mix. widely available brands like hwayo and eelpoom perform admirably in this duty
hwayo 50 proof, 80 proof comes in a black bottle
eelpoom 42 proof, 80 proof comes in a black bottle
let me know what you think
edit: btw, ilpoom is the superior choice with regards to soju. hwayo is essentially sweet potato vodka, which is fine, but its brazenly priced at 20k a pop. the 80 proof bottle of ilpoom runs about 6 singles, and two of them are enough to get a table of heavy drinkers (the only tables i know of) pretty happy.

I've had hwayo 50 proof before, I think (I need to check what I've been drinking as I'm currently out of stock) but I've never mixed it with mahkeolli or a mahkeolli fruit combo.
One of the supermarkets in my town has previously (now historically) stocked gin. Over the course of a month or so, that sold out so now I mix hwayo with tonic (mini bottles for 650 won a pop, always stocked) and have a nice refreshing soju and tonic - it's crap with cheap soju but hwayo offers a nice twist with the tonic and lemon. Not too expensive either. Strong enough to taste, not so strong that you feel it the next day unless you slam them back - the perfect midweek after dinner drink for me.
I need to investigate mahkeolli further though. My friends and I have hit up the mahkeolli bar in town a couple of times, I like the stuff but I haven't gotten into it properly yet.
Good thread!

yes, good soju mixes well with tonic. prefer it to GnT's myself! try hwayo with triple sec over ice sometime! extra orange zest optional. almost forgot to mention that honey makes good mahk completely irresistible to even the most adamant of non-drinkers (re: girlfriends). give it a shot
mark bars can have some good stuff, check your local out and try as many different bottles as you can. but in my experience the best mark is hand-made. pro tip 1: the bigger, non-hole-in-the-wall tofu places almost always make their own stuff. look for joints with names like dooboomaeuld or yetnahlsoondooboo. 2: tourist traps near big mountains, national parks and other attractions almost always cook up their own dohngdohngjoo or tahkjoo or whatever and that stuff can be amazing, if overpriced 3: restaurants that specialize in grilled fish or maeoontahng will usually have a pretty good selection cuz mahk has traditionally been the drink of choice to accompany those dishes
happy drinking!
