Hey all,
I'm thinking of going to China in my break. Any one else been there? Was it a good experience? Any tips?
Any feedback would be much appreciated,
thank you! :)

I spent 9 days in Beijing and didnt get to see it all.   And this was before they completed alll the olympic arenas.  China does everything big, so you pretty much spend one whole day at one site like the Forbidden City.   Where do you plan to go?  How much time are you spending in China.  Figure those out, then come back and ask some more questions.

Sorry to hijack, but I plan on doing Beijing for Chusok. I thought 4-5 days would be too long and get stale/boring. But you say there is that much to do?! I was thinking of maybe trying to do a southern city then flying up to Beijing. What do you think? I really just want to see the great wall and forbidden city. What other things did you like in Beijing?

China's so big...it depends where you want to go and what you want to see/do.

The poster above mentioned wanting to see the Great Wall, which is definitely a must do. There are different sections of the wall that you could visit, but I'd recommend going to the Mutianyu section of the wall instead of Badaling. Badaling is closer to Beijing, but much more crowded, although the views are still amazing. I've included a couple links that you could read up on and decide for yourself. One very important note, you won't be walking, you'll be climbing the wall as the steps are very steep and uneven. However, not all parts of the wall have steps.

Other places of interest in Beijing would be the Temple of Heaven and Summer Palace. Beihai Park near the Forbidden City is also nice to just walk around and take in the surroundings. There's a huge lake, temples, pavilions, and a pagoda. Don't forget to visit the "hutongs"  which are old narrow alleys/streets considered as part of the "old" Beijing. There aren't many hutongs left, but it's nice to see this part of Beijing's past.

Regarding food, there's just so much...such as street food and the more commercialized street food/stalls in the touristy areas. They're still good, just that they'll be more expensive. It sounds cliche, but you have to try Peking (Beijing) duck while you're there. It's so good! Have fun in China!

Don't forget, if you want to visit China you need a visa.  If you are American you have to buy the most expensive visa (the cheaper ones are not available to you).  Also, you can only get a visa from here if you have more than 6 months' validity remaining on your ARC.
