Where are the main places of interest to visit in Tokyo?

I highly recommend the 'palace hotel' in Minami-senju (http://www.palace-japan.com/english/index.html). I stayed there 2 weeks ago for a week and the staff were very helpful, plus the room was comfy. The area is nice too, and not so far from good places to visit (Ueno, Asakusa, and Akihabara). Maybe 30-40 minutes from Roppongi, Shinjuku, and Shibuya though.

Akihabara on Sunday is a good idea. They close down the street so you can walk around everywhere and see the crazy otaku culture. If you like video games, then Akihabara also has awesome 5-story arcades everywhere.

Shibuya is party central. I loved going there clubbing (expensive though)!!

Roppongi is like Itaewon, which could be a good thing or a bad thing depending on what you think of Itaewon? I'm half-Brazilian so I just chilled at a BR bar in Roppongi with Japanese-Brazilians.

Ueno park is big and nice.

Harajuku is a good shopping area.

For places to stay...

I once stayed in a hostel in Asakusa, which is a great area of Tokyo...

I forget the name of the place, but just have a look on hostelworld.com

You mention enjoying the slightly stranger things, so I'll add the Meguro Parasitology museum to your list.  Meguro is on the main loop line so easy to find, google the museum for better directions.  It's tiny but different, and oddly is apparently a common dating location...

Yep as many other people have said, Akihbara and Harujuku are definitely places to go.

Especially Akihabara.  If you like being all touristy and taking lots of photos, you will get quite a few unique ones there with lots of cosplayers and street performers.  Also, try going to a maid cafe there.  Feels a little weird with some creepy dudes around, but it's a pretty fun unique experience.

Tokyo tower too is good for a view... I heard there's a new one but not sure of the name >_< ;;

Too bad they took down the gundam : <

I studied in Tokyo for almost 3 months in 2009 and the entire time I stayed in hostels, capsules and ryokans.  I never paid over 3000 yen for a night.  Simply googling "Japanese hostels" will bring up the Japanese government directories which are very informative.  That's how I found most of my accommodations.

I loved Akihabara and stayed in a capsule hostel for almost a week.  There are a ton of things to take photos of, even a couple of hidden temples or two.

I on and off stayed in Asakusa the entire time I was there.  There are some really cheap single room ryokans.  Some really dank(nasty) and out of the way single room hostels too.  The area is really nice though.

Also, keep in mind that the JR system in Tokyo is absolutely amazing so even if you find a cheap place in an area that no one has ever heard before, as long as it's by a station you're good to go.  Actually using public transportation was one of the most pleasant things while I was there (keep in mind that it was during the humid summer months and yes I was shoved into already full trains.  I didn't mind.)

If you can, stay in a ryokan for at least one night.  They're all over Tokyo.
