How many DIFFERENT lessons do you teach each week?
« on: June 20, 2012, 02:03:56 PM »
This isn't the total number of lessons, but the number of different lessons.

This thread is NOT a contest to see who works (plans?) the least or who works the most.  (Not a peeing contest).

Replying to the thread is not required.

The purpose of the thread is to simply serve as a statistic for those of us who are interested what the rest of the field looks like.

For some reason I'm unable to vote in polls these days (session authentification has failed, EVERY time) so I'll just reply: 10.  Last year it was only seven, but ever since they decided I MUST teach 22 classes regardless of whether or not there are classes to teach, they've been coming up with these make-work projects and so now I get to do my four regular weekly lesson plans (gr. 3-4) plus invent a whole lot from scratch.

8 DIFFERENT lessons a week. - If it helps, I'm in a public elementary school.

I'm guessing people that mark down for that super high 22 range are at a hagwon?

I'm interested in what college and adult hagwon teachers answer. Good poll, OP.

14 :( It would be 17 but that I don't really prepare for 3 teacher classes I have... ^^ I wouldn't mind so much, but 8 of those I have to make up from scratch every week. Public school, by the way, over 6 different grades.

Last year I was only making about 5 new lessons (although I had zero book then). Still haven't decided if the book is making it better or worse, prep time wise....

Nope, I'm in a tiny rural public school (approximately 100 students) and teach on average 20 different lessons a week. I imagine most NET's in similar schools will have a similar total - not many lessons can be repeated when there's just one class per grade.

Ooh - that's an interesting point. I hadn't considered that, but it makes so much sense that population size would affect your class rotations.

I don't feel like 2 hours a week with me is enough for some lessons - or enough to make reasonable language progress. Are you finding that you're able to not only cover a lot of material, but also be pretty comprehensive about it?

Haha if my school could competently schedule my classes, then yes! For some very strange reason I see grades 3 and 4 four times a week, but grades 5 and 6 only twice (80 minutes) per week (which is less than grades 1 and 2!). So yeah - I can go really in depth with my grades 3 and 4 in particular. And at the same time I know completely what you mean about not having enough time to make reasonable progress (with my grade 5 and 6 students).

I am at a public middle school and see my 1st graders once a week for 45 mins- so 1 lesson all week there, and I see my 3rd graders once every 2 weeksso I am only teaching 2 different lessons really every 1.5 weeks.  Makes planning a heck of a lot easier!

I'm at a middle school so I have 3-5 lessons for the week. Usually I try to talk about a certain topic just at different understanding levels, but there usually has to be 1-2 dud lessons for when the kids are just not cooperating.

At my hagwon it was 30 individual lessons with different books every single week. No joke. I was there for 7 months, and never once got to repeat what I'd prepared before.

I left that job and came to public school.

Half the year I teach the 2nd and 3rd grade, so that was only 2 lessons I have to prepare per week.

Right now I am teaching 1st grade and the 'hopeless' low-level students in 2nd and 3rd grade, so it's 3 lessons per week. :D

I will never do a hagwon again!!!

public middle school. only 3 lessons, but i dumb them down and smarten them up with more repetition or extra activities for the different levels. and i only see each class once a week.

it takes about 2 classes with each grade to work all the dragging parts and make sure everything is in order, so i'd fail miserably at 20+ lessons every week without the chance to repeat things.

Public school.

1 main lesson with a couple different extension activities.

20 classes, no book, not quite 800 students.

Sometimes I'll do a special lesson for a holiday, or if I'm recycling a lesson from last year, I'll keep the same topic but change up the lesson for the 2nd years.
