Summer camps canceled?
« on: June 07, 2012, 02:56:03 PM »
The summer vacation period has been shorted, cause of the removal of Saturday classes.

My school said summer camp would be canceled, since I have vacation to use, but I would have to desk warm a few days.

Summer camps being canceled is the norm these days?

Mine are still on for sure.  And, this despite the fact I have too many vacation days due to renewal this past March.  I am going to use my renewal days Winter vacation, aftermy Winter Camps/.  Consider yourself lucky!

My new contract (SMOE) says I have to teach at least five weeks of camp over the year, so I doubt anything will be cancelled.  They're certainly going full steam ahead with this year's summer camp.

Legally, you are required to do summer camp. HOWEVER, there have been cases where the school just cancels the camp and doesn't inform the MOE/POE. When this happens, just take it as a sign of good fortune and keep it to yourself. Rules have tightened with camps because NSETs went around talking about how they had a shorter camp or no camp, which prompted complaints to the MOE/POE.

A few years, many schools let their NSETs off early during camps. Of course, there were schools that went by the books and kept their NSETs for the full day. However, some teachers decided to brag or unknowingly question their shortened camp days. This led to NSETs who worked full-time to complain the coordinators and MOE. Because of this, the MOE began sending random supervisors to make sure NSETs stayed the full 8-hours. Basically, a few people talking and complaining got the whole MOE to become more strict.

beckster, you got very lucky. keep it on the DL, don't tell any other public school teachers in your area that you don't have camp or you might find yourself being forced to commute to teach beside them every day of their camp. Summer camps are decided on a school by school basis.

Amen

Also for OP, just because you aren't doing a camp at your school doesn't mean you won't be sitting around for a ghost camp or joining a camp somewhere else. Unless it's official vacation, don't plan anything.

This isn't true. Some contracts specify you have to do camp (such as the new SMOE contract). Other contracts say you might have to do camps.

However, you are required to work 8 hours a day at school whenever you are not on vacation. You might get a kind school that doesn't make you fulfill this requirement if you are lucky.

Like most things it depends on your school and POE. Some POEs have area camps which you can be required to teach. Mine has a camp which you can volunteer to teach at. We used to have a bigger camp which teachers were required to go to if they weren't teaching camp at their school.

In my area many schools have their own camp, but some don't have a camp. Some people have to desk warm for the full 8 hours per day. Some people don't have to go to school at all during vacation. Others get to go home around lunch time.

This year I am using my summer vacation and renewal vacation to have almost all of the summer break off. My school hasn't decided yet, but they will probably run a camp without me and my co-teacher will have to teach it by herself. She is a contract teacher so she has the same requirement to be present during non-vacation days that we do (unlike regular teachers).

If your school is cancelling camp to accommodate your vacation then you are lucky.

If I'm legally required to do camps, I've been breaking the law every vacation since I've been here!
My school has never made me do them. There was talk about me doing one this upcoming summer. I said:

"I'm sorry - I don't know why the government shortened the vacation period - but I still have 10 days of vacation that I'm going to use in the summer. Because the government shortened the vacation, those 10 days are going to last essentially the entire vacation period. I can't do any camps."

My school told me actually that a lot of students will want to do an English camp with me this summer. The reason for this, is because the vacation is SO short, no other teacher wants to do any sort of supplemental camp over the summer (it would eat up the entire vacation). But, Korean parents always want their kids in some sort of supplemental camp. That's why they wanted me to do one.
I'm thinking just like all the other Korean teachers at my school - if the government wants to cut down on the vacation time, then there is no way I'm going to come in to school during what little vacation I have left.

My summer camp, despite the shortened vacation time, is scheduled to go ahead as planned.

Since this wouldn't leave enough time for the vacation they promised me/owe me, they're allowing me to miss the first week of school in August. I have no complaints :)

What's the minimum sentence the courts will hand down for failure to do summer camps?

In six years of PS service I was transported to: Europe (Italy, Greece, Turkey, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, G.B. and both Irelands), Japan, China, Thailand, Cambodia (apparently "dangerous" according my CT - I thanked her for her concern), Laos, Indonesia, Paupa New Guinea, Australia, Vanuatu, New Caledonia, Fiji, U.S.A and Canada.

The trouble was... they kept letting me back into K-land.

In September 2009 I was 'forced' to take an extra week of 'holidays' - self monitored quaranteen... just in case I had degi flu.  ::)

None of the other NETs in my city knew what I was doing.
The Ks once gave me five minutes notice. I didn't know what to do with the extra time.

I am working 2 summer camps.

However, the bolded statement doesn't necessarily apply to all, certainly not to my EPIK contract.

Article 14-4

During the school semester, the Employer may allow the Employee to not come to work on the day(s) when the school is closed for for in-semester school holiday(s), school anniversary day(s) etc., and these days will not be considered part of the Paid Leave set forth in the foregoing clause (1).

So, as my school, ie: the Principal, is my Employer, it is up to him whether or not I desk warm. I do a bit (only until noon), for the record, with the odd days off.

It's not so bad.

This is in my contract too. It only applies during the school semester, not the vacation.

However, that is really what I meant by having a kind school - they may allow you not to come in or spend only part of the day there, but they don't have to. It totally depends on your principal (or in my case the VP) and your school district as to what hours you have to work during vacation. If you don't have to desk warm for the full 8 hours each day then you are lucky!
