I only have two boys for my Summer Camp - any ideas?
« on: July 23, 2012, 02:14:49 PM »
My class for Summer Camp has been reduced from 4 girls and 2 boys to just 2 boys.
I'm teaching Middle School - they are both first graders, their English level is decent for their grade.

We watched Finding Nemo today and did a few vocabulary and personality sheets for the film.

I have these 2 boys for the whole week. Next week, the 4 girls will join us again.
Any ideas? Appreciated!
My first day I watched a few lessons and had my first class which was a Grade 2 class or something like that. I thought every things was great until a kid ddong-chimmed me.

LAN party. Play video games with them like a private starcraft match but make them have to announce what they are doing in the text box before doing anything.

(Preteach: I will attack teacher. I will farm minerals.I have five hundred minerals. I have 12 pylons.)
And/or make gameplay rules like you have to have X amount of whatever before you act.

Or play a fighting game and have them use comparatives to describe their character and why they won. This'll never happen I know but with 2 students I'd totally just bro it up.

lol@chad.  Love that.

I actually did something similar playing Dance Revolution (only with the keyboard and not feet).  I told them they need to say "up, down, left or right" depending on which arrow was coming up.  A great way to practice directions and was fun too.

Wow, 2 students?

I would request that it just be canceled, seems like a waste of time. But, alas, that's not an option.

The movie + worksheet route is good. Here's what I do.... I choose a movie. I watch about 20 minutes of the movie, and I make a worksheet. The worksheet will have different questions. Sometimes vocabulary (translation), sometimes matching vocabulary, always some conversation questions about what's currently happening in the movie, what might happen, who is doing what, etc. Then Discuss.

So, it goes like this ~20 minutes of movie, ~worksheet + discuss (probably 20 minutes) = About 1 class. Haha.

This means that one movie can last several classes!

Hey, I have the same situation, I only teach 2 3rd grade girls in one of my camp classes. I've got them doing some pair work by designing and making a stop-motion movie. They work together in making the storyboard and they will then present it to me. Then the rest of the week they will make the movie. Working well so far, but don't know what to do for next week. Probably the movie idea (but will bring some popcorn too!)

I played Monopoly Jr. when my camp only had 3 students.  Someone else on here made the original ppt, I put together the money and chance cards.

I can't see the stop motion movie working with my kids to be honest. I also want a language focus if I can.

Yesterday we watched Finding Nemo, English Audio, English Subtitles. I gave them 3 activity sheets to fill out for that which they did perfectly.
Today we just played Scrabble Slam. That was engaging, got them picking up a lot of  new 4 letter vocabulary. We also played Uno for a bit, with interrogatives on Wild Cards.

Now I'm stuck for what to do tomorrow. Going to HomePlus now to hopefully dig up a Scrabble Board or a Monopoly Board.
My first day I watched a few lessons and had my first class which was a Grade 2 class or something like that. I thought every things was great until a kid ddong-chimmed me.
