2012 Kpop Slam
« on: June 30, 2012, 10:07:22 PM »
So, I think I decided to torment myself by creating a new Kpop Slam.  I wanted one that had all recent songs, so I made one for only songs that have been released in 2012 (January-June).  The file is actually called, part 1 because I do intend to do a second one for the second half of the year for after finals at the end of the school year.

I borrow heavily (read: blatantly stole) from the original format that Shawol put together.  I even grabbed the whole SHINee surprise idea and ran with it because I too am a fan of SHINee and my students are well aware of this fact.  I picked new clips for the surprises and even switched out some of the GIFs in the beginning.

The file is HUGE (1.5GB) because I tried to use really high quality and clear videos so download it from rapidshare and drag it to your desktop if you want all of the hyperlinks to work.

There is a document called ‘Answers’ in the folder.  Please read it – it has the chart with all of the answers on it, and my (probably bad but close enough) translations of Korean titles.  Familiarize yourself with the songs please and maybe come up with a hint of two for the students if they don’t know it.

The JYP song and the SunnyHill song may be particularly difficult, my students don’t tend to like them, but I do.  And the F(x) song is pretty new so students might not know it too well yet…

I’ve never made a game like this before but I think I worked out all of the bugs I could think of before I posted it.  I’m also new to editing videos so I think that some of my clips could use some work, but they are good enough for the game.

Let me know what you guys think alright?

Not really.  I uploaded it to dropbox and was suspended within an hour for "generating excessive traffic."

I would try downloading it once you're home on your own computer.

Thank you SO much for this excellent game!  Must be the most well-designed game I have ever seen on Waygook, and my kids are loving it!

Big props!

I'm so glad.  I actually haven't had the chance to use it with my students yet - they'll get it next week.

I can't take all of the credit, I borrowed heavily off of Shawol but I did work very hard on it so I'm glad that students are liking it!

I just downloaded your ppt and all I have to say is....WOW! It is aesthetically beautiful. And the videos are definitely high resolution. I'm going to try this out on my middle school students and hopefully they'll love it. Thanks alot.

I click on it on Rapidshare but it says it's downloading but stays on 0 of 1.5GB. Is anyone else having a problem?

I just checked it.  It is working fine for me.  Maybe try using a different browser to download it?

Thank you for this. Perfect for this week, when most students have no interest in class.

I downloaded it yesterday. It did take a long time, getting very slow speeds from Rapid Share, but I just let it download over night.

I just used it there in class, and while it went really well, it did freeze a few times when it tried to load some of the videos, and then I had to restart powerpoint all over again. Just wondering if anybody had the same problem and how to fix it.

Cheers again

I've found that "sometimes" it's better to have the folder with movies on your desktop. The links sometimes break when your computer gets confused with a long movie path. Anyways, that's what I found helps me and I have a slow, old, xp laptop at school.

It didn't work for me last week either, so I switched browsers, and although it still says 13 hours, it is downloading.

One of my classes just informed me that I let a 2011 song sneak in...

In the Pot Luck section there is a song by A-pink called "My My."  This was actually from December of 2011...whoops.  But since it's in the Pot Luck section, I'm just going to introduce that section as an "anything goes" category.

Tried this out on my 3rd grade A-class and the girls were loving it. They were excited and they stayed after the bell rang to see each of the slides. As for my 2nd grade A-class, although most of the girls were excited to play the game they just couldn't figure out the song or group name, and they are avowed K-pop-aholics. I am going to use the game next for my English Summer Camp class which is made up mostly of Grade 1 students.

fyi, for those of you who have Office 2007 installed on your work computer, and can't get the videos to play properly - you have to rename the videos to something shorter (under like 100 characters or so), and re add them manually.  As I figured out, to my frustration, five minutes before class.

Above glitch aside (which is totally Microsoft's fault, grr), this is a beautiful ppt.  Thanks for the hard work, OP!

That's weird...I know its in .ppt format but I actually did all of the work for in in 2007...and it's run on 2007 computers at all of my schools just fine...

Thanks for the heads up though, I never knew that that could happen.

Some of my students complained last semester that Kpop slam 2 was out of date. (Teacher, so old song!) So I'm looking forward to this!  I wonder if it'd be possible to add "Gangnam Style" as an easy level one?  Then again, there's not that much English, and I'm not sure if I want to choose "Hey, sexy lady!" as a hint.  :-\

I'm attempting to download the file from the Google Docs link.  THANK YOU to whomever (dranrebc?) uploaded it there!  Good thing I still have 2 hours left of the day. :)

As I was waiting for the reply to post, I saw above that "My My" is actually a 2011 song.  Maybe I'll try to fiddle around with the PPT and put "Gangnam Style" in there instead.  Oh, my students are high school, btw, not middle school.  But it doesn't seem to matter much.
