Grammar help needed ASAP

(1/1)

baboo7474:
Hi to all waygookers,

This question is to help a  friend who works in a high school

here is the question on the test

Economists use the terms "open" and "closed" to indicate ___________________________________________. A common measure of "openness" is the average of exports and imports, expressed as a share of GDP. Thus, the Netherlands is considered an extremely open economy because it imports and exports about 53 percent of its GDP. On the other hand, the old Soviet Union was a relatively closed economy; it exported and imported merely 7 percent of its production. By this criterion, the United States stands out as among the most closed of the advanced, industrialized nations. Americans export and import a smaller share of GDP than most of countries listed in the table.

Now the answer in the blank is " how important international trade is to a nation"

but my wife wants to know if there are other combinations for that answer

for example

How international trade is important to a nation    (does that make sense...sounds good to me...but is it gramaticcaly right?)
how important international trade to a nation is   ( possible?)

any help would be great

thanks in advance

codetornado:
It is changing the order of importance of the objects in the sentence. It is also leaving the helping verb is dangling at the end of the sentence. The first is correct. The second would imply more information.
The Korea wants to put the verb at the end of the sentence because that is Korean word order SOV.

--- Code: ---How international trade is important to a nation.
How important international trade to a nation is

--- End code ---

TL;DR Not entirely wrong, but in this context it is. Use the first sentence.

tesoljon:
I would say neither alternative qualifies as appropriate. The first is grammatical, but has a different meaning than the supplied answer.

"How important international trade is to a nation" suggests magnitude. "How international trade is important to a nation" suggests a cause/effect relationship: International trade is important to a nation because it promotes global awareness. Something like that.

The second alternative is not English-ly grammatical.
