1.5 weeks after finals in high school. What do you do?
KimchEli:
very different from high school in the USA, where the finals are the last thing you do before vacation, we all know here they just continue on with class for a couple weeks after finals and before summer vacation. it seems like the korean teachers just carry on with normal lessons, but it seems kind of cruel for me to do the same - the students spent the last 3-4 days taking a test. what do you do for these last classes of the semester? do you teach normal, standard lessons? or do you show videos and just play games, a more fun and relaxed way to end the semester? was planning on just showing a movie (the youtube movie 'Life in a Day') but am wondering what other native teachers do.
thanks!
tesoljon:
I'm doing regular lessons.
This week, I'm doing something heroes and focusing on John Henry. There's a 10-15 minute cartoon, a crossword puzzle, and for my more proficient students, a dialogue.
I don't normally use a textbook or do anything involving grades, so nothing out of the ordinary here.
MissC:
I know a lot of people show movies, but since I follow the textbook during the year, I take this opportunity to play games.
This week we've been playing Guess Who (attached below). The students are in three teams. One team draws a name card and the other teams take turns asking about the person.
Q1: Does the person have (red hair/glasses/blue eyes)?
Q2: Is the person (name)?
On the team's turn they ask both questions.
I play a few times on the big screen, but then I expect the students to follow along on their own boards (one board per table).
Next week we're going to play "Top 5". If you do a google search for "Waygook Top 5" you'll find a lot of options. I'm not sure yet which I'll choose.
(At my technical hs I'm watching movies with Korean subtitles.)
fishead:
Go into youtube and punch in" What happens next?" You'll see these short video clips that stop and they are given three possibilities subtitles they have to choose the one that is the most likely. You put it on pause the students will choose one possibility. Put the video on pause. Ask what happens next At first they'll try to just shout out the letter. Tell them to read the full sentence then when they do that let them watch the rest of the video.
miss_cho:
At my technical high school many of the teachers show movies in most of the classes - the students expect not to work and I was *highly recommended* to also show a movie as it would be less stressful on me (i.e. my co-teachers wouldn't have to deal with my students complaining because I was teaching a regular lesson). So that's what I'm doing.
At my academic school I decided to teach a regular class the first half and then show a video related to the topic for the final half of the class. The students are supposed to answer a series of comprehension questions and the one with the most correct answers gets candy. Most haven't really been answering the questions except for the few that want chocolate but I'd say 95% are watching the video so I'm happy with it. Overall they're good students and I think I've played one or two games with them all year so I thought they deserved a break.
