Getting your family involved in your teaching!
« on: December 23, 2010, 04:55:50 PM »
Hey everyone,

Since it's Christmas time I decided to have the kids write Christmas cards to my family. My family made them an introduction video, introducing themselves and showing them some of the Christmas things we do around the house. Here's the video (hope it works):

http://sharing.theflip.com/session/2c38f7264d28176067fc6dc0bdb98148/video/38826411

I had already pre-taught some Christmas traditions/words. I told them they could write to my mum, brother, sister, or the whole family.

This activity took two classes: one was watching and discussing the video and then writing the card (given directions by section, i.e. #1 = Dear ________, #2 = My name is ________, #3 = introduce yourself and your family, etc.)
The next class we spent actually making and decorating the cards. It was so neat! I made some examples ahead of time, to give them ideas. I also provided all the coloured paper, stickers, craft materials etc. Then, I'll send all the cards to my family, and they will make another video showing them opening them and reading some outloud, and saying thank you/making comments etc.

The kids got SO into it! They loved the video and were so excited to write to my family. I also "encouraged them" by saying there were prizes for the best cards... (small xmas decorations, erasers, coloured pencils, etc...). That motivated them a lot!

Anyway, you can definitely adapt this idea for any time of year, have kids write your family/friends letters etc. The video idea is great, it gets students thinking outside Korea, and that they can use their English in a very real and fun way!

Fantastic idea!  I bet the kids loved seeing your family and getting to know a bit more about you!
