Non PPT Ice Breaker
« Reply #60 on: November 04, 2011, 03:47:17 pm »
I have used this ice breaker/bingo with both my low-level 5th and 6th graders.  The game is set up like a bingo board but each block is question.  The students have to go around the room and ask other students the questions.  When they get YES answer, they write that student's name in the box.  They can only write each student's name one time.  (You may have to adjust this if you class is small.)  Examples:  "Have you been to China?" "Do you like cats?" "Do you like to shop?"  I had to read through the questions first and have my co-teacher translate.  Yes, they are really low-level!   :o  Oh, yeah, and you have to keep yelling out, "ENGLISH ONLY!"  ...And do I even need to mention how much monitoring must take place so they don't just copy other people's answers?

Wow, this is fantastic and incredibly useful! Thank you!

Another spin on one of the games mentioned is to have students sit in a circle (I usually play and start in the middle) and say "I like . . ." (kimchi, to play soccer etc.) and anyone who also likes it must change seats, the person left without a place goes in the middle and starts again. I've also changed it to "I don't like" or you could use this same set up for "Have You Ever?" For higher level students, you could be more specific about the subject as well.

For some reason I' m no longer able to download anything from this site. Is anyone else having the same problem? Downloads used to work fine for me before.

Does it say "index.php" ? If so, I had the same problem too assuming that you're using Firefox's newest version 8.0, I believe. You just either try downloading with Explorer or Chrome or downgrading your Firefox. However, if you want to use Firefox still, just download the file and in the downloading browser, right click and select the option that opens up where the file is located. Once located, just rename the file to its original title and change the extension from .php to .ppt or .pptx

I hope that helps a bit. If not, I think there's a better explanation somewhere in this site. :)

Guess who is a great idea, and thankfully my classroom is already stocked with it.  Also, I really like the elephant game.  What grade levels does that typically work with?

I can't remember if I posted this file or not but here are hundreds of games (47 pages) that you can use in the classroom, camps, or wherever you need a game!

I find that ice breakers are a great way to lower students guards and get them ready for a class. I've been told it's really important to do PLENTY of icebreakers for camps or clubs. Some of the icebreakers are listed below, and there's also a website provided with a good list of icebreakers you can use in the classroom.

Pass the Ball Students start by passing a ball around and introducing their names to the other members of the group. Afterward, each student must pass the ball to their fellow students and say the name of whoever they're passing the ball too. This is a great activity for students to get familiarized with each others names and it makes a world of difference when students and teachers use first names. I recommend that the teacher also gets involved somehow. This works for groups that are not very large. It may also work by bringing multiple balls and allowing the students to have some time to pass the ball to each other while guessing names.

Some other great ice breakers are listed on this website. Hope this helps!

Another great and easy game is to start off the lesson with a presentation about asking and answering questions. These would be very basic questions such as "how old are you?" "Where do you live?" "What is your name?". You then get a small ball, like a tennis ball, and use it for the students to interact with one another, ie; one student throws the ball asking a question and the student that catches it has to answer. It is very simple and highly effective.!  :D

Thank you so much for the suggestions!

I just did the guess who with a 3/4 afterschool class and they seemed to really enjoy it. They especially enjoyed drawing thier own faces.

I realize that I didn't do enough vocab prep. work, but that was my own fault. Live and learn, I suppose. I think for a first activty it was fun and went very well.

WOW! Thank you guys so much. My co-teacher just told me I have to prepare games every week for the middle school students. I was worried I'd run out of ideas, not any more :)
