Anthony I have been looking at your website and youtube page for the past two hours and man am I inspired! You and all the teachers who have utilized your strategy are great. I am a new teacher to Korea, but  I have been teaching for some time now. I notice my current school is utilizing the new summer camp curriculum and is strict about following it. I have only observed a few classes, but I am far more of the interactive teacher then the speak and repeat all class type of teacher. Do you have any advice on how to introduce these type of innovative teaching methods into such a structured system? I do have a decent relationship with most of the English teachers after two weeks, so I will try throw some of the ideas their way and utilize what I can when I can. I will be sure to post any footage I take.

Anyways thanks for the ideas!

My summer camp revolved around music and zombies. We spent the last week of class making videos for each. My website has all three posted together: Welcome to Zombie School, "Boom Boom Pow" and "My Love". The website is http://brittanyteacher.weebly.com/after-school-class.html. I let the kids choose their own songs, then handed them point sheets and let them do the filming on their own. I had to keep an eye on the group that did the Westlife song, as they became a little bro club and didn't always stay focused.

The kids absolutely loved the camp and my school was incredibly impressed with the videos, especially the zombie movie. Writing out scripts for the zombie movie worked very well and gave every student a sense of purpose. Would work very well with music videos.

Here's the video I made with my summer camp using 2PM's "Hands Up," Far East Movement feat. The Cataracs & Dev "Like A G6," F(X)'s "Hot Summer," and LMFAO's "Party Rock Anthem":

It was like pulling teeth to get the kids to make the video (and actually be on camera), and took a lot of time editing, but in the end I think it came out pretty good.

Hey guys! I made this video to show on the first day of winter camps as an introduction and mostly to get the kids started right off the bat with a high energy level. I hope you enjoy, it's seriously epic!

I found this video that some high school students did for their A.P. Korean class in California. I wish I found this video when I did my music class last summer. It would have lightened things up a bit.

Great idea on the Louis Armstrong song. Great song too.

Anyone know any other nice simple songs which can be used in the same way?

I also did this for my winter camp and it was huge hit.
I used the song An Elephant is Bigger than a flea.  Easy lyrics and fun to draw.

Planning to do it again for this camp, I am going to use The Lion KIng's - The Lion Sleeps tonight.
I am attaching the following
1. The art sheets for them to draw on with lyrics printed on them.
2. Lyrics sheets for the kids so they can learn the song.
3 Some pics from the movie to help the kids decided what to draw.

Wow!  Thanks to all the teachers who have posted your students' completed music videos.  I'm having a film making camp like I did last summer, but one group decided to do a music video and I've been lost about how to guide them.  This should help a lot to show them some examples.  My main concern is that we don't actually get to hear any of the kids' actual speaking.  Since all the other groups have to actually speak on their movies, I'm just a little worried this'll seem unfair.  But there may be a workaround.  Thanks again everyone!

Did most of you just use iMovie?  Windows Movie Maker?  I'll be using the latter probably.  Last summer my students seemed a lot more proficient with making movies than my students in this camp, and a lot more eager to make the projects.  We'll see how it goes...

I'm looking forward to doing this with my all-boys middle school.

The class size is not determined, but each class will be about 50 minutes- 1 hour and will probably have about 15-20 students for 10 days.

Each grade will have a group of songs to choose from (age appropriate).
I want them to copy the original music video as much as possible as far as dance moves and style are concerned.

Because I do not have an amazing camera myself, I'm hoping that we can use the students' cell phones to shoot (most kids have a Galaxy S these days).

I think explaining the roles to each group is really important, so I'll be editing the .ppt more for lower level students.

I fully expect that I'll be editing the videos myself since the school has VERY low funding (I have been given no money for camp this year) but I think that will be part of the fun.

 See you soon with the results!

I just finished doing a music video winter camp for two weeks at my high school and it turned out really well!! I saw my students for ten days, two hours each day and they loved it so much by the end they were staying in my classroom for three to four hours working on their video.

The basic outline I used for the class was:
Day 1 - introductory games and watching music videos to get ideas
Day 2 - Pronunciation Lesson to make our lip-syncing look real
Day 3 - Students work in groups and pick a song
Day 4 - In groups plan the video
Day 5 - Practice the lyrics and dancing
Day 6 - Students film themselves with their own smart phones
Day 7 - Filming day
Day 8 - Originally planned to put the film on the computer and work it all out, but it turned out to be another filming day
Day 9 - Students put the movie together using Windows Movie Maker
Day 10 - Pizza party and watching/talking about the videos

I attached my initial lesson plan for each day along with the rubric they had to follow in making the video. I made sure to go over the rubric with them on the first day so they all knew what was coming.

And here are the videos we created!! Hope you enjoy them as much as I do :)
