Internet!
« on: February 09, 2011, 02:00:11 PM »
When I first got to Korea, I was completely wowed by the internet speeds. I could download something 5mb/s. A year and a half later, the same company, my speed has dropped down to about 50kb/s which is hardly enough to play my games online. I was wondering, if anyone else has had issues before like this? Not sure exactly what route to take...my internet company is SK.

My internet company is KT and they installed a so called state of the art fibre optic cable in our apartment block. Well, every two weeks my internet speed drops to virtually zero from about 20Mb/s. I then have to call them and there is much sucking of air between their teeth and head shaking and eventually it is back to normal speed - for two weeks that is. I have had to call them 10x since December 2010. When I ask them what the problem is they point at the box in the foyer and then depart.

I think they have no idea what the problem is and just unplug a whole lot of things and plug them in again and that seems to work, so just give them a call and tell them what your problem is.

ha ha ha that sounds like my internet company.
For two years they tried to blame my macbook saying that it was "stealing ip addresses and then they said that I had too many viruses and that I look at porno. The whole time I was pointing at the modem and router, finally they replaced them and magically things got better.

My internet is always on and off. Do you have the number for KT? It would be a really big help! Thanks.

Before coming to Korea, I heard that the internet speed is the fastest in this country and in some EPIK promotional video, one teacher said the internet here is 50 times faster than it is 'back home'. I was very impressed by when my actual experience with the internet here leaves me disappointed. I was used to 10 Mbps back home but I swear the speed in my apartment is at least 5 to 6 times slower and at my school, it's at least 10 times slower, no exaggeration. My Skype videos not as smooth as they used to anymore :( what's more, it's cable and not wireless which is quite inconvenient.

But the price of internet is cheaper so as long as the connection is stable, I should be grateful.

It is easy to make it wireless, just buy a cheaper wireless router and plug the cable that goes to your PC/laptop into the router and hey presto you have a wireless environment.
