A little Optimism please
« on: February 15, 2011, 09:08:34 am »
I have had a little extra time to be on waygook this week since the kids have to practice so much for graduation ceremonies. (so much I moved up to Explorer level)
I am actually a little disappointed in all the negative posts. I understand that some may be losing a job. Let me be clear, I am VERY sorry for you. You have a right to be negative about korea.
But for others, we have a really great job in korea. Most of us only teach half of a day and then get 4 hours to lesson plan. That is why there are so many AWESOME games and PPTs on here. In a hagwon, or even in the states, you will be working a FULL 8 hour day. Dont complain, this is a great way to help in a small way and make some money.
Sure there are some bad co-teachers. foreigner teachers and bad things to say about the korean education system. But its the same as any other job. There are always bad workers and room for improvement. I get very negative at times and thats what this website is for, to talk to others about it. But lets try and remember how good we have it.
And for the 'unqualified' teachers people speak of, there are many who payed attention in orientation, learned about teaching and applied it to the classroom. I am confident enough to say I could now teach next year with little help from a co-teacher. So I dont appreciate others saying foreign teachers arent qualified. There are many that really work at it! I havent meet one that doesnt try his/her best. So thank you to those that do! You are AMAZING!
I just ask that people leave some positive notes on here sometimes. Let's boast about how our co-teachers take us out to dinner, or a student who didnt know the alphabet could say the whole thing by the end of the semester. I plan to try to work with more of my orphan students next year.
Most of us are only here for a little part of our life, so lets do the best we can until then. We arent going to be changing the system anytime soon. So except it and move on.
Think Positive!!!

Spring break coming Friday! That's gets me mega-positive!

And yeah... it's nice to see kids learning too. I got this one kid in my after school class that started in grade 1. Took him almost a year just to get the alphabet. One day all the other students were gone on some field trip but he didn't go so he was the only kid in my after school class. He essentially got a 1 on 1 private lesson with me making him read 3 letter words for 45 minutes.

Halfway through that 'class' he started realizing that he could actually read a little bit. Now he is one of the best students in the class.

It's nice to teach these after school classes on top of my regular classes because I can actually see the improvement of the students.

Hear hear!

Love my school, students, friends, neighbourhood, job, the food, the language, the whole lot! Don't like my apartment, but, you know, its free!  :D

Don't know what I will do at my next home abroad after being so spoilt here.

yes, there are lots of great things coming my way.  today it was free food

i think its a lot easier for people to get angry at something rather than admit that they dont know how to deal with it.  plus i think lots of people come on here out of boredom or desperation.

when i'm happiest i've forgotten all about the internet and this desk where i spend so much time

I agree that there can be a lot of negativity on the site, but I see waygook as a place for foreigners with similar experiences and struggles to come together and support one another.  Also, I think it's really important to remember that our situations in Korea aren't always the same, and one person with a great job, great school and great support network might be reading a post by someone who's really struggling and has had a profoundly negative experience in Korea.

No two teaching jobs are the same, so it's nice to have an online community to support you through thick and thin :)

It's not just in Korea that ESLers are a rather negative bunch. I have just finished reading this forum regarding Vietnam. Sheeeesh!!!

I love the positive note on this thread!  You know I have my struggles at my school and life in general in Korea just as most people do but for the most part I really have been enjoying my time here!  Lots of new life experiences and I'm really starting to get comfortable teaching and in everyday life in Korea!
My co-teachers and I have really worked on our relationships and I'm so fortunate that none of them have to leave my school this year.  As hard as it is to communicate with them sometimes I do know they truely care about me from the simple smile that they will throw my way!
And lets not forget the kids, yes sometimes they can just go crazy!  But when one child makes you smile or laugh that day it usually is enough to remind me why I am here!
Thanks again for putting up this positive thread, so nice to read!

Positive moment of the day:   I had fish WITHOUT bones for lunch :)

...I'm not mocking this thread - I love it... and a while back I decided to have a 'positive moment' every day - even if it's something small.  It does WONDERS :)

So...

"What's your positive moment of the day?"    ;D

A friend told me how to uninstall Google Chrome so I could re-install it in English. Yay!

i agree.  I'm definitely sad and worried about the gepik cuts, and sorry for those that got the axe, but we probably had this coming.  I agree that the work we do here is really easy compared to what you'd be doing back home for the same amount of pay.  I too only work about 4 hours a day and the rest of the day i can plan, prepare or just take it easy.  20 vacation days is great too, paid plane ticket to and from korea is fantastic also.  There are tons of things to be optimistic about here.

My favorite part about today is my co-teachers are also being forced to deskwarm, so I get to spend more time with them without kids running in and out. Yesterday we played poker for a while and today we sat down to a delicious lunch of homemade bibimbap. It's been really nice to just spend time with them without all of us being so busy.

Today I got some free (not tasty) hamburgers and chicken fingers and around 5 cans of Welches soda for no reason from my 5th graders. My 6th graders acted like they love me (probably not all true) AND when I first showed up at work today I got 10k for lunch and I have no idea why.

It's all about that lucky rabbit year. Now if I can just learn to keep my mouth shut maybe more of the same will happen.

Oh yeah, and did I mention that I'm going to Thailand for 8 days and 7 nights starting the 18th for the first time.

LAST YEAR however was a bit more of a battle at the hogwan. Hurry for public school. I hope my next semester goes as smoothly as this last one.

It's not that we want to be negative, but lets face it. Debate online will always have that tone. It's not because we want to be negative but it's because we care. If we didn't care we wouldn't complain. So keep complaining and we'll keep reminding you why you are passionately misguided.

You can't be positive all the time. AND some might suggest (like me) that negative people attract positive things.

Anyways, I'm in a playful mood and I'm tired as hell, so I guess I'll just say teaching in Korea keeps me well balanced.

A handwritten, page long, multi-color birthday card from one of my 5th grade girls with a munchkin set from Dunkin Donuts. I know it was my positive attitude and approach towards my students that has gotten me numerous treats such as this throughout the semester...and yes 1 positive moment totally erases 8 periods worth of negative ones.

I had the most amazing lesson with one of my lowest level students by teaching him to cheat at an online hangman game. There was a smallish set list of words the game picked from, and we went through and copied them all down, then checked new words against the list. He went from being unable(or unwilling?) to identify any letters or communicate in English at all to saying things like "Teacher, seven letter, two O!" over half an hour. I've never seen him so enthusiastic.

I'm a totally new and useless teacher, and this is the first time I've felt like I'm really getting through to a student. Fun stuff!

It cheers me up whenever I am out and about, and see a student who is typically an absolute terror in class wave at me and yell "hello!"

I'll sometimes see my students at the grocery store or at the movies and they are always a bit shyer but happy to say hello.  Even a few years after they've left my class!
If you ever have a student in your class that seems to not like you or be angry all the time, I've found a smile and a good morning (or afternoon or whatever) can really brighten them up in class too.

This is so true.

I just had to say my good-byes to my 6th graders whom I've taught since 3rd grade. One of the boys who I've NEVER heard speak came up to me, gave me a hug and said "Thank you teacher for all you did for me". You can imagine the look on my face when he said this!!!!!!!!!!

It's moments like this that make this job so worth it.
