This subject has been done before, but I wanted to create a version using CDex that would be only audio - so as not to distract the students with youtube videos. I also wanted create a version that used better music  ;).

Artists used:
Antony & the Johnsons, Bonobo, Buika, The Mars Volta, Venetian Snares, Tool,
Joanna Newsom, Fanfare Ciocarlia, This Will Destroy You, Dr. Dre.

I have attached the files in the order that I intend to use them.

Genres of music lesson plan - detailed information.
What is a genre - quick PPT explaining genre and instruments. [Autoplay]
Genres Tasksheet - preparation worksheet for the main PPT to follow.
Music Genres - This PPT is large because the 10 tracks are embedded.
I have applied the autoplay feature set to 1 minute per slide, but you can turn it off if it's not necessary for you.
The students must listen to the music and match the genre with the track.
What music are you into? - two worksheets to prepare them for the final task. 

Your feedback is greatly appreciated.

Please Note: Music genre descriptions, which are of course debatable anyway, are used here more as a description of the artist rather than the genre as a whole.I'm sure you understand that it is much easier for the students this way.

Also, some information on 'what music are you into' worksheet has been extrapolated from someone else here on Waygook, so thanks to them...

Language. I'm going to try this with after school elementary students and I don't think they need to know about "ho's" just yet  :)

Bahaha, you're probably right! I think, by high school, my students have been exposed to the same or worse - and as my students are such low performers in general I sincerely doubt they'll be able understand it. Definitely a good idea removing it for Elementary students though... Let me know how it goes...

shhowse - that's a shame. Well you know of them now. If there's any artist on there you like, tell me and I'll recommend a bunch of similar artists. Unfortunately, most of the music I really love is 8 minutes +, so I couldn't fit those tracks into the PPT.

They don't seem to care about lyrics here, as nobody every know what is being said lol. If you wanna use rap with no swearing then Will Smith is always a really good option.

Niiiice. I did up one of these a while back, but never got around to using it, all in CD format with two examples of each track (~20 seconds long each and only core genres as it was elem. level, so nowhere near as sophisticated as this, I tried to make the second a local example where I could, but this was in Japan, it'd be hard to do that in Korea without strong knowledge of the indie scene). An interesting discovery to me was that I realised that what was deemed metal from 20 years back is more akin to what can be commonly classified as rock today.

Dwebsterlfc has an unusual yet valid point. For the last few months, the Daejeon subway system has been greeting commuters with the chorus of a certain Lily Allen song with the initials FY. Still, I raise this because if you wish to clean a song, I found it a lot easier than I expected: I simply differenced the channels into mono over the offending word in Audacity. Dropping the vocals out to me seems better than beeping as I feel it's not pushing the fact there was coarse language in it to your colleagues. ;)

I'm bingeing on the new Mountain Goats album lately - you can stream it at npr. It hasn't leaked yet.

You seem like kind of a post-rock nerd, judging from your "most songs I like are over 8 minutes." On the really slim chance you don't already know Godspeed You! Black Emperor, or Explosions in the Sky, check them out. The new Mogwai album is great, too.

Thanks for adding that spidey91, I'll check it out right away.
As for being a post-rock nerd, I wouldn't say so exactly.
A lot of the best music from the 60s up until now has been progressive and post-rock is merely one of the latest traditional limbs of it. But yes, I do like Godspeed, Silver Mt Zion, Do Make Say Think, Explosions (who I have tickets for in Manchester in April) et al, a lot - when the mood takes me. Mogwai are great live but have never truly captured me on recording.

I'll check out Mountain Goats.
Are you much into your world music?

Gogol Bordello and Beirut are about as close to world music as I get, unfortunately.

Also, Mountain Goats - you'll either love them or really, really hate them. They're completely lyrically driven. Best album to start with is Sunset Tree.

Funny enough, I've never been able to get into older prog like King Crimson or - gasp - Pink Floyd, but I love The Mars Volta, Tool, post-rock, etc.

If you like jangly indie-dream-poppish stuff, check out Pains of Being Pure at Heart. They're a treat - saw them in Oxford two years ago.

- and, btw, I'm not saying I don't like songs less than 8 minutes, of course I do.
6 minutes is a good time for a song to breath...
But if we take Neutral Milk Hotel's oh comely, or Akron Family's everyone is guilty, then those extra minutes just really work for me. The short track length is probably why punk is my least favourite genre, though I'm not averse to a little gypsy punk.

If you like bordello and beirut, check out a hawk and a hacksaw and fanfare ciocarlia. I also really like Ojos de Brujo, Gotan Project, Tanghetto etc etc.

How can you not get into Pink Floyd or King Crimson? These artists shaped Tool and the Mars Volta... How about Bowie?

Man, one of the hardest things about living in Korea is not having people to talk to music about. They're here, but they're few and far between...
