Grade 2 Lesson 3  “A Caterpillar in the Cave”

Thanks for the upload Jas. I really liked it but unfortunately my co-teachers aren't too happy with me using the book directly, so I stole some of your presentation and changed some of the content a bit for anyone else in my position. The lesson plan focuses on three ways to ask questions; politely, friendlily (?), and naggingly, I haven't really followed up on the 'polite' section because I think it's already going to run over but I'm leaving the slide in in case anybody wants to work with it. Thanks to everyone who uploaded the Mom Opera video also, I've given it a shot in this. I'm attaching the full lyrics with gap exercises for an 'A', 'B' and 'C' stream class. Hope these are helpful!

p.s. I have a feeling that earlier versions of powerpoint don't support embedded videos, so please try it out on your computer first. If it doesn't work you should be able to find the mom opera fairly easily on YouTube...

2.  Relevant vocabulary and questions for Ready, Part B.
3. Action!  Steps 1, 2, 3.
4.  Real-life speaking -- fill in the blanks
5.  Real-life speaking -- create your own advice

Supplement presentation with additional questions and examples.  For practice, I make the whole class stand up, and as the students answer questions they are allowed to sit down.  Depending on time, I'll do individual students, pairs, or rows.

This looks really great!  However, I would suggest that anyone who decides to use it insert an apostrophe on page two for "I can't understand why we move so slowly," before you send it to be photocopied :)

I've been teaching at my school for about 8 months now. Initially, they told me they don't want me to use the book. Then, suddenly just last week, they told me they do want me to occasionally use the book.

Was very relieved to find this thread on here. Thanks for all the tips guys, great work :)

This is great stuff summerthyme, thanks for taking the time. I like the stand up until you've answered idea. It takes away the whole 'hiding at the back' aspect.

3rd year, Chapter 2
I'm the mom! Talking (to/about) Parents
Low/multi level // using praise/condolence/agreement/feelings + I can't understand why

In a nutshell: Review from last week, simple speaking activity, Mom movie, creating a list of things parents want us to do vs things parents don't want us to do, using "I can't understand why blah blah~"  and close with Pass the Pencil game.

i thought the activities in the book were great for lesson 3, so i didn't see any reason to deviate from them. i wanted to switch the order for the a level class, having the students do the card matching activity before they learned the forms and the real-life scenes, however my co-teacher put the kilbash (sp?) on that just now. so it's just a boring PPP lesson after-all.

Here's a game I made for G3 L2, to practice 2nd conditional.

First I played the original If I Was a Rich Girl by Louchie Lou and Michie One with the attached worksheet. I set it up by asking what they knew about Reggae. It's hard to understand so I played it twice.

After going through the answers, I asked them what the singers would do if they were rich as a quick review of the form.

Here's the game:
Divide students into teams. One person from the team whose turn it is, comes to the front and fills in an "If ________I would____" paper. Their teammates have to correctly guess what they answered. If they don't another team can steal the point. They have to answer with "He would/she would"

I used the powerpoint on the screen so the class could easily see what question their teammate was answering.

Here's mine for Grade 1, Lesson 2.  I went waaaaaay off the reservation with this one, involving horoscopes to go off the "birthday" and "likes / dislikes" themes.  Have no idea if this will crash and burn, but I guess I'll find out tomorrow and report back!  FYI, before going into the horoscopes, I'll give the students the attached handout for them to take notes on the slides. 

(As an aside:  I'd be so pissed if I were Hana or Duna.  Their mom had a brilliant opportunity to make a chocolate cheesecake....but nooo, how about a sweet potato cake that pleases neither of them! :P)

p.p.s. I did a "pass the bomb" game with the kids today and they loved it. When the bomb blows up, ask the first student "When is your birthday?"  Make them answer in the target grammar : "My birthday is ____."  Then, the next time the bomb blows up, ask that student what the previous student's birthday is.

WOAH I just tried it and we crashed and burned! I totally over estimated how difficult it would be! Do you have any tips after doing it for a week? We didn't even make it through all of the signs...  :-[

Ahh, sorry, was worried that would happen.  i should attach a disclaimer with that lesson or maybe pull it! 

It seemed to go okay in my classes, which I'd probably say are intermediate-level.  The girls seemed to be more into it than the boys, for sure. During each slide I'd ask students to raise their hands if their birthday fell between those dates, and then had that group of students repeat the example phrases.   There was always at least one Scorpio in each class, and it always amused everybody when I announced that this student was a little bit crazy.  After the signs, I had them talk about what their sign said about them, and whether or not they thought it was true.

For lower levels - I'd skip the horoscope thing entirely. I'd do the pass-the-bomb game with the birthdays, though, as that was a big hit!

Thanks, this looks great!  One question - what is that guy in the bottom right panel on page 1 looking forward to?  I can't make out what the figure is doing.

Does anyone have any ideas how to make Lesson 2's writing section simple yet exciting for a very low level class. I have done 'opinions' and debating with my higher level classes which is only slightly relevant but the text book is way too easy for them! The gap between these levels is crazy and they want them to learn the same vocab ahhhhhh! Any ideas would be great.

Ah! I was wondering about that guy too! And Mr Snowboarder. The students really got in to this and i wasn't sure how it would work. Thanks!
