Grade 3  Lesson 7

I'm new to this book and I've got a lot of stuff to cover...I don't think I'll be able to cover all of this in one class and will probably have to supplement more for the next one.

Any ideas on how to spice it up would be greatly appreciated. ;D

Sonya

Heads up -- wrong form of "your/you're" on slides 5,6,7,8,9.  Should be "you're."
****EDIT***** files corrected now :)

Grade 1,2 and 3: Lesson 6 Week 2

Here are my contributions to Lesson 6 for all grades. I was feeling rather unimaginative and wanted to stick some kind of silly game on at the end of the lesson so I made a Lucky Wheel game for all three grades (obviously different questionjs for each grade) I've added in my introductory PPTs for each grade too in case they can be useful to anyone. The PPTs are cobbled together form other posters on here so cheers to the OPs!.

Here's what I have been doing for Grade 3, Lesson 7.  I have some slides from my vacation that you might want to remove, or swap out for your own.  I just wanted to tie in the theme of "Finding Korea Around the World!"

My Grade 3s are doing speaking tests after the break.  For the speaking tests, I'm having them choose one thing about Korean culture to talk about, so we've been spending a long time on the worksheet, editing and practicing.

I haven't gotten to the telephone game portion of it yet.  I have played this version with other classes, though, and I will have to warn you that while fun, it is kind of a nightmare to score!  If you do go ahead and play it, it might be useful to get your co-teacher involved on scoring this one.

Here is a worksheet I did for Second Grade, Lesson 7. I just go through the lesson as usual, and then give them the worksheet for review at the end.

For Part B, during the lesson, I ask them where you would make the complaint so that they understand.

I use this worksheet for all levels.

Here's Grade 1, lesson 7.  It's a bit short because of vacation, and because the other English class is already on lesson 8!

Slide 21 - "Brain Bucks" is the name of my class currency - change this to suit your class!

EDIT: I've added some slides, and an illnesses themed game based on the "Cause and Result" matching picture template I posted earlier for a 3rd grade lesson.  I haven't debuted that game yet, so it may be kind of complicated...will try it tomorrow with my 1st graders and report about its effectiveness.

side note:  I tried the illnesses lesson today, and tried to get the students to guess what the illnesses were based on the picture.  When the nosebleed picture came up, one student raised his hand and said "Red Nose Day!"

EDIT EDIT:  Removed the "Call the Doctor" game because it went down like a big pile of FAIL today!  Will retool it and try and make the matches more obvious!

Future tense for Grade 1.

It's a little late, but I've been using this video and the attached worksheet as an Future Tense activity. This is my second year using the video and worksheet, so it's been tried and tested. I usually have them read the lyrics side first and then do the worksheet with VERY strict rules on "cunning".

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fFwwSARPyWU

It's Demi Lovato, one of the Disney kids. The students seem to really like the pop-y sound and I've been telling a bit of a lie by saying she's Justin Bieber's friend. But she probably is! I mean she's from the same Disney set as Selena Gomez, so they've likely at least met....

I also have a game prepped, that I've yet to try out.

Basically, the class lines up in two lines, in front of two stacks of cards at the front. Each stack has identical "future" questions. Students on each team need to answer the question at the top of the card pile. If they get their answer wrong (grammar mistake) they need to take another card until they get it right. The first team to finish their stack wins. You'll probably need your co-teacher to listen to one line's answers while you listen to the other. This will probably be too hard for my mid and low level kiddies, so I'll figure out some sort of adaptation.

Grade 2, Lesson 7.  Again, massively abbreviated because of Chuseok, and I only meet with these students once a week.

For the worksheet, I just made up some topics.  You can use the ones from the powerpoint, or think of your own!

There aren't any lesson plans up so far for Lesson 7 for Middle School 1 (Bridges Around the World).

Attached is a comprehension quiz activity I used for both my lower and higher classes, which seemed to work well for both of them, and took about 20 mins to complete.
Both are .doc files: One gives a brief explanation of the activity, and a list of questions about the text.  The other file contains the materials to be used.

Don't know whether anyone will find it useful or not -- co-teacher asked me to plan activities with just over an hours notice (as is expected!).

Also here's an activity I did for Grade 2.  Same format as last activity, just a bit harder

I'm posting my Grade 1 Chapter 7 Part 1 (illnesses) stuff from last year. It may need tweaking...

Anyway, we started with listening using the Ready and Action section. Then, I showed them the attached powerpoint and drilled the different kinds of illness vocab. This was followed by a game of illness charades. Then we did Talking Break and followed by an easy "find your partner" game.

The students are given a card with a certain illness and some variation of "are you ok?". They have to go around asking people and answering until they find the person with the same illness. It goes by really fast and you have to really stick to their heels to make sure they aren't saying it all in Korean or just showing their cards.

Another variation: Make teams. One team has 3 minutes to walk around the classroom and ask the seated students "are you ok?" etc. They get a point for each match made. Then the next team goes, and so on. The team with the most matches made wins. This might be easier for class control and monitoring English usage.

The following week we'll do comparatives. Justin Bieber's video for "Never Say Never" is chock full of vocabulary and the kids love it. It's I think I may have a worksheet somewhere, but this year I might try a game instead...we'll see!

If anyone has a good "comparatives" game I'd appreciate it for both my Grade 1 and 2 lessons! I remember last year we tried this Paper Planes game off of Dave's but it never worked very well...

***EDIT*** Ha! I totally forgot to add the original powerpoint when I posted this. ANYWAY, I've jazzed it up and re-arranged it a bit, although it's still pretty simple. Here is an actual upload of my illness ppt.

^ I did a simple game in which the students are supposed to line up according to who is taller, stronger (I made them arm wrestle), louder, etc.  I even wedged it into the "bridge" theme by calling it "The Bridge Game."  That turned out to be way fun, but I can easily see how it can lead to chaos with the wrong sort of class!

I still don't get how they come up with the themes for this book.  Bridges and..."Chuck has a stomachache"?  I do have a laugh with some of my high level students over the total randomness of the books!

Thanks! That game sounds great. I may have to modify it a bit for containment purposes, but what a fun and simple way to practice!

I loved the idea of this make sure to game.

I made a similar powerpoint on the "make sure to" theme of grade 3 lesson 6.2.

I made it easier by trying not to choose signs that have pictures. Some of the signs are serious and some of them are fun and a little more challenging.  Haven't tried it yet, so we'll have to see how this one goes!

Grade 1 Lesson 7 - comparing and describing

Last year I was teaching with a different textbook but I guess all the books cover the same kind of stuff. Here is the Blockbusters game for Superlatives that I used for my kids - they liked it and the theme music is pretty cool!  8)

I didn't make the template - dunno where that came from originally - but cheers to whoever that genius was!
(BTW Blockbusters was a cheesy game show from the 80s in the UK.)

Hi ! I am new to teaching and to this site, and i am using these textbooks, but for the Grade 1 i have the 2009 edition, for Grade 2 i have the 2010 edition and for grade 3 i have the 2011 edition. I am told to use the texts, the activity books, as well as the teacher's guides. Im not really sure where to start lol also, i am told to only cover the speaking parts but that is only two pages in each lesson, so they said one page per lesson - i feel like it is hard to make a 45 minute lesson on so little :P any help would be greatly appreciated !!

Some random Grade 1 2 & 3 ppts.

They're all really simple, for grade 1 it goes with the speaking worksheet 6-4 (the answers come up in the order they match to the Korean - I won't put Korean on my ppts)

Grade 2 I haven't had to use yet - it's just a quick way of covering good for you yet again. For higher level classes I'd make them say what they did from the picture then get someone else to praise them.

Grade 3 - hidden sports picture thingy, which apparently is the BEST THING EVER according to some of my students! (they're easily pleased!!) And ppt with pictures for them to give warnings about.  Also a Ch7 amazing facts ppt, it's based on the one from the 2nd grade (oh how I love being able to use the same stuff) and I've not used it, but it's just a 5minute 'I know you can do this but the book says we have to do it again' filler

I think I'm ahead of everyone here.  I recently did Chapter 7 "Finding Korea Around the World" for 3rd grade.  I did a lesson the Korean Wave and am combining it into a 2 week lesson where they have a project.

The lesson focuses on giving news and responding with appropriate exclamations while discussing aspects of the Korean Wave.  Its girl-centric as I teach at an all girls school.  For the practice activity they must give news about the celebrities in the pictures (who are all in the news this past week).  Their partners must respond appropriately.

For the project - their groups have to pick on thing about Korean life or culture.  They will research/make a poster/create a dialogue using the target language.

Hope this helps anyone stuck.

Thank you so much, sophos! The Lucky Wheel game was such a huge hit with my 2nd graders that I'm going to change my 3rd grade lesson to include it, too! :) Much appreciated!
