GR 3 Lesson 2 - I don't want to fall behind

I'm still working on this. I did this about advice and the differences between should and must.
For the higher students, I will post slides 18-24 around the class. They will read the scenarios and pick an option for what they will do.
For lower students, I am going to play a pass-the-ball game.

I'm having a hard time coming up with lesson ideas for year 3, ch2.The story is almost painful to read! Anyway, this is what I brainstormed out. I'd love to see everyone else's ideas are for this chapter. I bet there's good activities that I haven't thought of.

Ways of giving apologies and congratulations
Everyday technology/students create own inventions
Things that parents just don't understand/ speaking activity student vs parent
If I had a million dollars... (If/I'd statements)
Addictions (that I got from here! haha)
Text messaging (txting)

:-[ Anything else?

Here's mine for Grade 1, Lesson 2.  I went waaaaaay off the reservation with this one, involving horoscopes to go off the "birthday" and "likes / dislikes" themes.  Have no idea if this will crash and burn, but I guess I'll find out tomorrow and report back!  FYI, before going into the horoscopes, I'll give the students the attached handout for them to take notes on the slides.

(As an aside:  I'd be so pissed if I were Hana or Duna.  Their mom had a brilliant opportunity to make a chocolate cheesecake....but nooo, how about a sweet potato cake that pleases neither of them! :P)

p.s. the font I used is called "Just the way you are" and it is here: https://www.dafont.com/theme.php?cat=603

p.p.s. I did a "pass the bomb" game with the kids today and they loved it. When the bomb blows up, ask the first student "When is your birthday?"  Make them answer in the target grammar : "My birthday is ____."  Then, the next time the bomb blows up, ask that student what the previous student's birthday is.

p.p.s.s. - For lower level students, SKIP the horoscope stuff!  Or use a version posted later in this thread: http://waygook.org/index.php/topic,5015.msg64345.html#msg64345
Better yet, just skip my lesson and go ahead and use that one for any levels...

Edit- there is a picture of limes that i have labelled lemons.. oops!
also, my mind is totally destroyed by soju and i cant remember the names of the lettuce, so i just wrote herbs haha... oh no.

Seoulian: if you don't mind me asking, why didn't you like the game?   Was it too difficult to explain to the students?

Yes, th game was difficult to explain. Even my co-teachers had some problems with the explanations. Also, it did not lead to enough talking.  Depends on the class, you might get it to work.

sorry, i forgot to upload this rules sheet. it should be most helpful.

a couple of recommendations:
*i'd pre-teach the vocabulary of the food items with the illustrations, since many of the dishes are western dishes that the kids have no experience with
*i'd give a menu to each group, a complete set of food cards and a chart that the kids can write down their choices on
*i'd preview the game for the whole class with one of the groups and have your co-teacher translate after each step
*it probably wont work with anything but a high level class

best
EDIT

i've added the presentation i am using for this lesson. the relevant parts are in the latter part of the presentation. just before class i realized that there were two logistical problems, one unique to me and the other a design flaw in the game itself. i have groups of five students, so it would be impossible to collect four items. also, if students are given free choice over their menu items, then some students may choose the same item, which can result in a ridiculous game of give and take between students.  even with those flaws it worked out okay. the group i demonstrated with got it and one other, and my co-teacher and i were able to explain to the other four groups within a couple of minutes. hopefully my revisions to the rules have solved these issues, without raising any new ones.

I have all of those books. I used the first and second grade ones last year and just started the third. They are actually pretty easier to use, so don't worry too much. I usually do one lesson with the text book, then a lesson with the activity book, then a review lesson. The review lesson always consists of a game. I have 3 weeks per lesson though. I will start making some posts on here of lessons - although, I don't use the recommended layout for the lesson plans, but they are still not hard to follow. I will start some posts up here soon if I have extra materials, but, to be honest, the book if your best friend with these, there isn't too much reason to deviate. I go over section "A" then let them practice in pairs. Next I make them close their books and they are tested in front of the class by standing and speaking. Then I do the same things for "B" and "C." The activity book lesson takes a little preparation, but very little, and that is easy to follow. The game is Jeopardy. Every class is in competition with the other classes in their grade to win a prize at the end of the semester - they don't know what it is yet though. Anyway, I will appreciate it is anyone has suggestions, when I make some extra materials I will post them for all to use. Take care!

Year 1, Ch 2, My Twin Sisters
Family tree activity, family survey speaking activity, focusing on "she likes ___." "He likes____."

For very low level classes. You should change the pictures to you/your family...
I did this activity last year also. When you have your KET give instructions in Korean, have them say that it's okay to lie - at least in my neighborhood, a lot of students don't have fathers and it's a kind of sore spot. So, we're saying that it's okay to make-up family members if they want to.

Here is what I did with my grade 1 students for lesson 2. They went crazy for the game that I played with them at the end.

I first reviewed the introductions part from lesson 1. I know a lot of my students knew this already but a review for some of the less advanced students kind of gives them something to work with.
I then have them go over the jack and Zack and real life scenes. I ask them questions to see if they understood.
That part takes up a majority of the class time. NEXT is the activity.
I laminated the words and made them HUGE so that they were easy to see and I could reuse them for another class. I divided the class in two groups and had them move their desks so there was a large empty space in the middle. Each group got the same set of words.
I then read the sentences aloud and the first group to stand in front of me with the words in order and say "FINISHED" got the point.

Let me know if this helps :D

I'm still struggling with the grade 3, chapter 2 stuff.  It's pretty awful.  Also, some of my kids are orphans so I'm worried about dredging up sore feelings with this "parents vs. kids" theme. :(

Yesterday, after the first preview of this lesson bombed, I tried an activity where I handed out red slips to some students and yellow slips to others (red and yellow cards are the school system's form of punishment, so all the kids think that's funny).   The kids with the red cards are the parents, and the kids with the yellow cards are the students.  Then I instruct the "parents" to scold or nag the "kids."  Had some funny results with my higher level class, but we'll see how it goes with the others.  It went over better than any of the book activities I've tried so far, though.

If anyone has any suggestions for more activities to make this chapter bearable, it would be greatly appreciated!

Grade 2 Lesson 2 Restaurant

Pretty basic stuff but just in case you like the ppt or feel rushed here is what I'm doing. I have the lesson plan attached and the worksheet is with that. I'm stretching it over two weeks and may change it a little as time progresses.
The first week they will use the worksheet and the second week they will create their own dialog and present it to the class.

Grade 2, Lesson 2: Restaurants
Adapted from BogglesworldESL (simplified version)

No PPT necessary, but there are a lot of materials to print out and use in the class. Works well if you can pull it all together. I also made chef-hats out of paper to give to my students so the waiters were obvious in the classroom.

Here's the original:

Not done with Grade 3 Lesson 1 yet, but here's a video I plan to use for Grade 3 Lesson 2:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PXe91rD4UGo

The kids have probably seen this already, but it's relevant and funny!

Karenology, what did you end up doing for your lesson?

Review lesson plan and game for Lessons 1 and 2, grade 3.

The lesson is divided in three parts --

Part 1:  Group questions.  Divide the students into 5 or 6 groups.  Students come to the front of the class as a group.  Students pick a question out of a bag.  All students must answer it.

Part 2:  Group dialogues.  In groups, students must create a dialogue at least six lines long including at least two vocabulary terms/phrases.  At least 2 students must perform the dialogue for the class.

Part 3:  Review jeopardy using my Simpsons jeopardy template.
