I also have these textbooks, and while I DO use a number of the listen activities in the book I kind of use it as the "bones" of my class, not as the "meat." I base my lessons around the material in the textbook and then add additional activities to supplement it.

their attention span in the 'textbook class' compared to my activity class that i teach a week after the textbook goes to show how much they really don't care about the native teachers' class. the textbook, most of the time, is boring and the so-called 'activities' are just standard conversations. but they want to pass the test so they knuckle down and do what they have to to learn this stuff. then my 'fun' classes, of which are probably based around 70-80% on the textbooks, they don't give a crap about.

it's frustrating to think that when you try to make things more interesting for them all they really want to do is work on the textbook. co-teachers included, if they're honest.

Grade 1 Lesson 2 : Do you have healthy habits?

(this one is in link with Listent and Speak 1)

1. Make them brainstorm the daily routines that are in the book, add some new ones.
2. I printed this 2 page worksheet on both sides of one page. First they fill it out by themselves, then they ask their partners about routines and fill those answers out on the other side of the sheet.

3. They watch 1 or both of the videos and write down as many daily routines as they can. (1 video is easy, one is much more difficult). Videos should be linked in the PPT too.

Since many of us use these textbooks, may I suggest that we use this thread to upload our lesson plans and materials here so we don't have plan it all on our own? It's a real and constant struggle for me!  :'(

I also use these books (same as last year) and will be uploading my ppts as i make them to help some people out.  Most of the PPTs that i do create will be for grade 1's though but hope it helps anyways.

Right now we are starting lesson 2 -Do you have healthy habits and i do lets communicate and think and write.  For the lets communicate its fairly straight forward as the kids fill out the table and ask their partner the same questions about habits.  For step 3 my co teacher and i will be showing them some more good habits (10 to be exact) which i have created a ppt for. Then we will hand them a work sheet and play a sort of mingle activity where the kids have to ask as many of their peers the 10 different habits that we showed on the ppt.  I think we will do a race (havent had the lesson yet so we will try it out tomorrow to see how it goes) and see who can get 10 different of their peers to sign yes (one student per habit).  The kid that does that will win.  Make sure you monitor that the kids are having a dialogue and not just signing yes to their friends paper.

Hope this helps.  Good luck to everyone for the new year and check out www.sharpenthatpencil.com.  Its new but easy to navigate and it has a lot of good activities and some ppts that i have used in the past.

Grade 3 - Special Memories

I did the listen and speak 1 where they must learn the key phrases: Should I...? and You'd better....

So I drilled the fact that when you have this sort of conversation you have 3 steps
1. a problem
2. ask for advice
3. give advice.

After doing really quick practice with the books (the students are rarely into those) I put up this powerpoint.
Each picture is a problem and in groups they must say what the problem is, ask for adive and give advice (at least 2-3 different ones).

My students write this stuff on a piece of paper, so at least more than one participates.
They seemed to like it. And they are very passive,

Grade 3 - Lesson 2 - "Would you like to"

Here is a lesson plan based solely on "Would you like to...".  It starts with the students writing their own dialogue (invitations) through an activity called Fold the Paper.  The instructions are in the plan (and pretty detailed for CTs) but if you have questions then please ask  :)

Once they have written the invitations they practice reading and replying with the person next to them.  I also included some tips to help the students sound more natural i.e changing 'Would you' to 'Would ya'.

The PPT has the words to write for the Fold the Paper activity.  The slides were made at wordle.net.

Hi,

I'm also using the same books.
I am working on the 3rd Grader's (Pink Book) Lesson 2, Listen & Speak 1  "had better"

I have attached the worksheet and a game that goals along with it. The Simpson's Bomb Game I found on here but I can't remember where I got it from. I just changed the questions.

If anyone finds it useful or thinks it can be improved, please let me know.  :)

Credit for the sentences I used go to the websites below:

Grade 3 - Lesson 3 - Laughs, Tears and More.

Here's a lesson plan that mostly ignores the language functions for the chapter but is aimed at teaching some vocab and phrases related to talking about movies.  I haven't made any other materials for it / tested it on a class yet, but I'll add some PPT action when I finish it.

Has anyone got any ideas for Grade 2 - Lesson 3 - Are You a Good Netizen?  "Will you do me a favour?"  Would be much appreciated at the mo!  :)

This is a low-level Jeopardy Review Game for Grade 2.  It covers the dialogue, warm-ups, and read & dos of Lessons 1 and 2.

Hope it helps anyone.

Hey all, I've been using these books since last year and I have more than a few activities compiled.   I teach 1st and 2nd grade. I'm in charge of Warm-up, L&S 1 and 2, and Tune-In. Please ask or PM me for any unit, and I'll post lesson plans and all soon enough.   For now, I'll post what I did for lesson 1

This is my lesson plan for Grade 1 Lesson 2, covering the "dialogue" on page 25.  It basically follows the powerpoint.

1.  (5 min) Review Clock Times
2.  (10 min) Do the 1st "dialogue" on page 25
A: What time do you get up?
          B:  Usually at 7:00
     Making the students use "usually."
3.  Got through the next few slides practicing the dialogue.
4.  Practice with your friends.  Since it is so easy and simple, they only get 1 minute and then I make a few lucky individuas stand up and show off.  They have to change the underlined parts of the conversation.
5.  (10 min) Do the same for the 2nd "dialogue" on page 25.
A: What do you do after dinner?
          B: I listen to music?
6. Activity
(Explanation 7 min) I hand out pieces of paper that have either times or activities written on them (boys get activities and girls get times).  (See slide 20 for the times and activities).    The boys will then have to stand up and find their partner (girl with matching time.) (show slide 20 so that they can find the right partner) On the board I write:
Boys:  What time do you ____?
          Girls:   Usually at _____.
(Find partner 5 minutes) They have to use this text to find their partner and then they sit down together.  I try to make this short.  They will stand around talking if I let them, so at about minute 3 I start saying, "sit down" so that by five minutes almost everyone has found their parnter--but you have to be on them to make sure it doesn't take all day.
Go though day: 10 min) Then we go through the day one by one.  On the board I write:
Girls: What do you do at _ (time)_?
          Boys: I _____.
After "I wake up." I ask the class, "What do you do next?"  And the students with the next activity (brush teeth) stand up and do their part.
I always have one of the activities--usually somewhere in the middle--so I provide a short break for humor by talking in a gravely man voice.

ok I made this up for 1st grade, lesson 3: School Life

1. Brainstorm subjects they have at school
2. Show them subjects students have in USA/Canada
3. Compare (which ones are different
4. Talking: ask your partner what is your favorite subject? why?

5. Watch this video about a middle school, answer the questions (in groups of 4 for my students)

starting lesson 3 - think and write with my gr 1's tomorrow (i teach lower level kids).  I follow the book pretty much to a tee as thats what my co teacher requests that we do with the class with some activity or game if we have more time.  For this lesson we will complete step 1 and 2 and then i show them a ppt of other things that Aram does in her day.  The students will then make up their own character and tell us about their day.  For example.  Billy bob is a middle school student.  He rides his skateboard to school.  We give them a brief introduction about adding the S to the end of the verb so its "walks to school and not walk to school"

Hope this helps

If anybody is still doing daily routines, I found that this is a pretty good video to show and ask questions about (or have them write down the schedule of):

They especially liked when he can't say the Korean right! :)
