A close gap activity using U2's "Still haven't found".
Uses pictures to give hints.

*Opens better in Openoffice.org writter*
**May need some editing in Word as it was created in Openoffice.org & saved into Word**

Pop Songs (lyrics & worksheets)

This is a quick lesson I came up with, morphed from a few others. I've made it exclusively for girls but can be easily adapted to a boys or mixed classroom.

I give the students a copy of Music Worksheet 1 - and explain that we will be listening to four songs in English. All they have to do is listen to the song and complete the song chart. I load 4 songs on youtube.com, preferably with English subtitles, and after each song review the answers. The four songs I chose were:
1)Westlife - My love 2)Wondergirls - So Hot 3)Britney Spears - Oops and 4)Big Bang - last farewell. I know that two of these songs are Korean, but it keeps the girls interested in the activity, and often they just sing the words but have no idea what they mean! So good for them to know what the songs are actually about. This section takes 20-25 min.

With the assistance of the co-teacher I then conduct a short role play on music, with a fill in the blanks chart for the students to fill out as they listen. You will usually need to conduct the role play twice. After this I review the answers on the board and award points or prizes for the correct answers. This takes 5-10 min.

To finish off, i get the students to write their own role play about music in their notebooks, in groups of two or three. I leave it pretty open that they can write anything they want, as long as it is on the topic of music or songs. This ususally takes the students 10 min or so to write and rehearse. Then extra points or prizes are given in the time remaining, to those students willing to come up and perform their role play in front of the class, usually very funny.

So 50min-1hr lesson in total, and one of the few lessons I've taught, where all the students are willing to wake up and participate. Have fun!

Five songs

I teach a 1.5 hour class for teachers once a week, and for fifteen minutes of every class they really enjoy doing pop songs as a listening activity. So here are some of the worksheets I've made since I began teaching the class.

Songs included here are:

Circus by Britney Spears
Penny Lane by the Beatles
More Than Words by Westlife
Nobody (English version) by Wonder Girls
Blowin' in the Wind by Bob Dylan

As of the time I'm posting this, you can find a decent enough copy of all the songs except Blowin' in the Wind on youtube.com by searching the title and artist name together. (I used an mp3 for the Dylan song.)

To Be With You - Mr. Big

(since they'll ask: "waited on a line of greens of blues" in the chorus apparently means green with envy, blue with sadness. i had to google that one.)

I was at an EPIK thing where they talked about this Black Eyed Peas song
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BY3_AhqNDoQ You get the kids to write down either 'tonight' 'good' 'gonna' or 'woohoo' and when their word comes up they have to stand up, if it comes up again they have to sit down.

I showed this video first http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CVQorfIX84w and told them who Oprah was and we looked at Chicago on a map, told them the band was very popular in the US. We talked about changing the lyrics to songs the way they do for the Chicago performance.

Then I had them do the stand up sit down thing. They will sing some parts but others are too fast. But they like the song.

I have a really hard time finding songs 6th grade will sing. They will not sing anything that is too fast. But they will not sing anything that is for a younger age group, or is old. So that rules out almost everything. I had moderate success with 'There was an old lady that swallowed a fly'. It is mostly the boys that refuse to cooperate with songs, and they enjoyed the parts about dying.

I recently did "Friday I'm in Love" with my middle schoolers.

This was useful for learning some vocabulary, as well as practicing speaking about what they will do on certain days.

Lesson went as follows:
1.) Listen to the song (The Cure's video is not particularly inspiring, so I left that out.)
2.) Give Ss lyrics worksheet with missing words. Listen a second time and allow them to fill in the words. I made this a team contest, giving points to teams who wrote the correct lyrics.
3.) Discuss new vocabulary with a PPT including pictures and sample sentences.
4.) Listen again, encouraging Ss to sing along.
5.) Use the Structure "(Weekday) I'm..." to discuss our schedules.
Ex. 'Thursday I'm going shopping', etc.

I work in an all girls school so was not too surprized when most students voted for this song as the song they wanted to learn next week.

I just put it together this week and haven't used it yet.

Always remember to check a ppt before you use it in your class and feel free to make any changes!

Sonya

I just made a few changes to the original...you tube vids did not play in my class this morning and I could not connect by clicking on the "watch on youtube" so I hyperlinked the title instead, so just click that instead.

Can't was spelled wrong...missing apostrophe...

Forgot to animate heart...

All better now...if you see any other errors I missed...pm me please...

Hey Sonya! Your ppt is great!

I also did Justin a while back.. and my worksheet is a little different than yours.

First I had them listen to the song and scratch out the incorrect words.

Then I had them replace the words with the correct ones (on the right side of the page). To make it more difficult, have them fold the page so they can't see the words.

For the Luda part, I had them check off the words that they hear.

After, count how manys "Yeahs"

And follow it up with some vocab/discussion if you have time.

Anything with Justin is a hit, even my middle school boys liked this lesson ^^

My students also love Justin Bieber. After watching the Baby video, I showed them this one of a 2yr old singing. They loved it.

Justin Bieber - One Time
« Reply #12 on: August 25, 2010, 10:28:30 am »
Not a fan of the Biebs but my middle school students love him. I made a fill-in-the blanks worksheet for the song One Time.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CHVhwcOg6y8&feature=av2e

Have the students watch the music video one time. Then hand out the worksheet. Students can work with a partner. Go over any words they don't understand.

Play the video again but pause after every few lines to give students time to write.

Then have the students read the lyrics together at the end.

This listening activity also goes well with this reading activity: http://zachary-jones.com/english/2010/05/04/justin-bieber-trivia-esl-activity/

Breakaway song: Game and Listening worksheet
« Reply #13 on: November 03, 2010, 08:05:43 am »
Hey guys
I know most of us use pop songs as a way to explore vocabulary and get students talking.
Here are the lyrics to Breakaway! I broke the song up into three parts and made two activities to go with part 1.
1. teach part 1 of the song
2.collect song sheets
3. Play the pop song scramble to reinforce vocab and song structure.
4. pass out the listening challenge and use the last slide of the scramble game as directions.
Have fun! I will post the Listening Challenges  and scrmables for part 2 and 3 of the song as we do them ! 8)
