Lady Gaga BAAM
« Reply #100 on: June 03, 2011, 10:06:00 am »
This is a good reading activity for mid-high level middle school students.

I had my students volunteer to read 1-3 sentences at a time, and we went over the words in bold.  Then I showed them the video of Stefanie Germanotta while she was at NYU and a fairly school friendly live performance of Lady Gaga.  I made 2 versions of the game, one easier and one that's pretty challenging.

Katy Perry - Firework

Pretty straight forward listening/music lesson.  As annoying as the song is (or will be once you teach this class more than 3 times), the message is pretty good.

I did not show them the music video, only mp3.

Pop Songs (PPTs, lyrics & worksheets) The Cure - Friday i'm in love
« Reply #102 on: June 11, 2011, 08:36:35 am »
Hi, I did this lesson with middle school grade 3 (girls) but it could easily be used for higher or lower levels.

Starts with a word grab, then gap fill, then singing, then some activities using adjectives and days of the week.

They really enjoyed it and found it pretty easy to sing along (apart from the last verse!)

Enjoy! x

here are two great websites that I found that are useful for this topic

I also attended a great session at the Busan KOTESOL conference that included using pop songs - he makes music videos with the kids

Bruno Mars - Count on Me. It's clean, cute and easy, so it can be used for all ages. Attached is a PPT with some vocab words, taken from the gap lyrics worksheet, also attached. I use the simple video first, just to get them to listen to it, then I play the animated one at the end.

We're Going To be Friends  -  Jack Johnson

Fall is here, hear the yell
Back to school, ring the bell
Brand new shoes, walking blues
Climb the fence, books and pens
I can tell that we are going to be friends
Yes I can tell that we are going to be friends
Walk with me Susie Lee
Through the park and by the tree
We can rest upon the ground
And look at all the bugs we've found
Safely walk to school without a sound
We safely walk to school without a sound
Well here we are no one else
We walk to school all by ourselves
There's dirt on our uniforms
From chasing all the ants and worms
We clean up and now it's time to learn
We clean up and now it's time to learn
Numbers letters learn to spell
Nouns and books and show and tell
Play time we will throw the ball
Then back to class through the hall
The teacher marks our height against the wall
The teacher marks our height against the wall
And we don't notice any time pass
Because we don't notice anything
And we sit side by side in every class
The teacher thinks that I sound funny
But she likes it when you sing
Tonight I'll dream in my bed
While silly thoughts run through my head
Of the bugs and alphabet
And when I wake tomorrow I'll bet
That you and I will walk together again
Because I can tell that we are going to be friends
I can tell that we are going to be friends

@mariah.lawrence, I like that you haven't removed one of the core themes of Born this way. Many people would be tempted to take out the gay references for fear of having to explain them, but I think it's important to not make a big song and dance about it to the kids. These kids need to learn about the real world, not continue to hide from it. That's just my opinion, because I hate it when my life is deleted from lessons because people are afraid of backlash. (I know some people will say it's not appropriate, but then don't reach about ANY romance issues, including the ever popular Baby.) Teach the lyrics, whatever they may be, and teach the kids (I'd save it for HS) something real in the process. You never know which kids might be struggling with themselves and take some hope away from the message.
