At lunch time I do a pop song every day so one of my students requested this song but I told them they couldn't watch the video as it has murder and Lady Gaga's behind so they said "Teacher, lyrics only." which was fine by me.  A fun activity that includes using their own vocabulary and writing skills.

I really like your ppt!!  I was wondering, how do you get the music linked to the ppt slides?  Also, the song plays when I press the like on some slides(like the blues one) but it doesn't work on others (like the country).  Could you explain how you link songs to he ppt, then maybe I can figure out how to make them work.  I also have the Korean version of PPT so Ive been learning all these trick along the way using the icon pics and stuff...so I think it's taking me a lot longer to learn PPT... so any explanation is hugely appreciated!
And having the kids stand up when they hear their words is an awesome idea for a game!!  Love it!'

Oh and you should add the lyrics to the bottom of your class video  - It's such a great video too!  The seagulls are awesome!!!! so creative:)

English Pop Song - Rocketeer
« Reply #83 on: April 26, 2011, 12:11:21 pm »
My elementary students love singing to pop songs. I usually show the music video to the song on youtube. Pass out the lyrics to the song in English and Korean. Then we sing the song with a youtube video with lyrics. Here is Far East Movement's Rocketeer.
~
Dynamite-Taio Cruz!! My 5th and 6th graders loved this song. It was difficult finding a song they could enjoy after I played it. They always chanted for Dynamite.
~
Taught to elementary school students. They seem to dig it. (Just the way you are)
~
Easy song with some decent stick figure videos on youtube. (1234)
~
Banana Pancakes--Jack Johnson. Who doesn't like Jack?
~
HEY!!! I feel good..nah nah nah nah nah (James Brown - I got you)
~
Fireworks--Katy Perry. I haven't used this one yet, but I think the kids will get a kick out of fireworks erupting from the breasticles!

Who is Justin Bieber?                      Name: ___________

Justin Drew Bieber was born on 1 March, 1994, in London, Ontario, Canada. In 2008 he received a recording contract from Island Records after talent agents discovered his videos on Youtube.com. R & B singer Usher heard his singing and recommend him for a contract.

His first release was One Time, which came out in 2009. His first album, My World had many hits. In 2010 his hit single Baby became a top hit in many countries.

Justin came from a disadvantaged background. His mother was only 18 years old when she had him, and raised him as a single mother working in low-paying jobs. Justin taught himself to play many instruments, including the piano, drums, guitar, and trumpet. Despite coming from a poor background, he entered many song contests and became a world-wide success.

A good game to play with songs ( I often use The Beatles - Yesterday) is to cut each line of the lyrics and scramble them.  Split the class up into groups and give them the lyrics all mixed up.  Play the song and ask them to put them in the right order. It is a great lesson for advanced students and especially auditory learners.

I threw together about seven questions with screenshots and added links to the video in a PPT. Not exactly hard work but I wanted to add some sentence construction exercises. You might want to change them to gap fills for lower level students (read: take out a keyword).

Also, the screenshots are really dirty. If I go and clean them up I'll reupload the final cut.

PPT Songs which graphically illustrate lyrics
« Reply #89 on: May 16, 2011, 03:29:28 pm »
Here is "The Locomotion".  This is a great song for all ages, and you can do many things with it in the classroom, including have one group (more advanced) sing the lyrics while the less advanced group sings the chorus.  The upload limit here doesn't permit the whole song to be uploaded, so to add music to this please take the subsequent .wav file and add it to the second slide as a transition sound, and it will play through to the end.  You can then check "rehearse timings" and run through the presentation once and it will save the transition speeds so you can play it hands free in class.  After the students learn the tune, though, you may want to go back to the text only version so that they can sing it at a slower pace.

This is "The Climb" by Miley Cyrus.  This was originally done by Sonya and auto-timing for the insertion of the blanks has been added.

Avril Lavigne - 'complicated' song lesson
« Reply #93 on: May 18, 2011, 09:04:43 pm »
This is a lesson I did as part of my after school programme.

Starts with a word grab - post the key words up on the wall - some of these are in the song, some aren't, put into two teams and kids grab the words when they hear them, they get 1 point for picking th correct word and minus 1 for choosing a wrong one.
Then listen through the song and fill in the blanks.
There's also a powerpoint which has some questions to look at b4 the song and things to do after.  I did this with middle school girls grades 1-3 and they really enjoyed it. Enjoy!

The Beatles Powerpoint and document with three songs and embedded videos
« Reply #94 on: May 23, 2011, 03:09:32 pm »
I put together this Beatles' Powerpoint with lyrics and embedded videos (from YouTube) of two singers singing "Yesterday", "Imagine", and "Here Comes The Sun".  One of the videos has music while clips of the Simpsons is playing in the background.  The blank Powerpoint slides can be opened by just clicking the mouse a few times.  I am also including the lyrics to the songs on Word. I hope you like it.

Bruno Mars - Lazy Song

Song  + video a massive hit with Middle schoolers. I've used the lyric fill-in activity with lower ability (words highlighted were the ones omitted since we were working on repetition) + there is an extension for higher ability students. The video links (official + w/ lyrics) can be found at the top of the document.

Enjoy!

superstar by Jamelia

students like this song

People always talk about (heh oh heh oh heh oh)
all the things they're all about (heh oh heh oh heh oh)
write it on a piece of paper
got a feeling i'll see you later
Bridge 1
there's something 'bout this let's keep it moving
and if it's good let's just get something cooking
coz i really wanna rock with you
i'm feeling some connection to the things you do
(you do you do)
Chorus
I don't know what it is
that makes me feel like this
I don't know who you are
but you must be some kind of superstar
coz you got all eyes on you no matter where you are
(you just make me wanna play)
Baby take a look around (heh oh heh oh heh oh)
everybody's getting down (heh oh heh oh heh oh)
deal with all the problems later (later)
Bad boys on their best behaviour
Bridge 2
there's something 'bout this let's keep it moving
and if it's good let's just get something cooking
coz i really wanna rock with you
i'm feeling some connection to the things you do
(you do you do)
Chorus
I don't know what it is
that makes me feel like this
I don't know who you are
but you must be some kind of superstar
coz you got all eyes on you no matter where you are
(you just make me wanna play)
I like the way you're moving (heh oh heh oh heh oh)
I just get into the groovin' thing
(you just make me wanna play)
if you just put pen to paper (heh oh heh oh heh oh)
got that feeling i'll see you later (heh oh heh oh heh oh)
Make your move
here.. we get a little closer
you.. rock it just like you're supposed to
and.. boy i ain't got nothin' for ya
say.. you just make me wanna play
It makes me feel like this
don't know
gotta be gotta be a superstar
all eyes on you
(you just make me wanna play)
Chorus x 2
I don't know what it is
that makes me feel like this
I don't know who you are
but you must be some kind of superstar
coz you got all eyes on you no matter where you are
(you just make me wanna play)
