Collaborators for Let's Go Middle School English Text
« on: March 01, 2011, 11:10:44 PM »
First of all I'm a talker just as a warning if continue reading.

Is there anyone out there using Let's Go for their middle school who wants to exchange lesson's with me?

I'll post the most interesting lessons I did using themes and powerpoints original or adapted from the great people on this site. (Seriously, some people are truly gifted multi-media teachers).

Last year, I put ever scrap of energy into planning lessons that middle school boys with no interest in academics what so ever accept for a few. The lessons went well considering it was my first time teaching teenagers after two years teaching.

The problem was numbers. I taught 35 students mixed student in every class. I didn't have time  to plan each class for multiple levels for reasons of sanity. The effect I think many of us are struggling with.   I really pleased the middle percentage of students but bored the top 3 and sometimes frustrated the bottom students. However, I didn't have time to deal with the problems of mixed levels until the end of the year.

This years goal is to plan two lessons for each classroom in which I can teach the illiterates and literates. I already have a lot of material for last years lessons which I can adapt into a lower or higher level.

Which Let's Go books are you using (1-6) and which version (1-3?/4?)?

I have a friend who has been teaching with LG for 5 years.  She has a ton of vocab lists and tests and misc., stuff I can probably get a hold of.  Just let me know the version and and level.

I'm not sure. It's not anywhere I'm familiar on an Western textbook.

This is what I could find from checking the covers and liner pages and this might help narrow it down.

There is Middle School English 1 2009/3/1
"                                         " 2 2009/8/19
"                                         " 3 2002/7/3 of which I know I'm getting the newest version this week.

If that's not helpful know that on the front covers:
1 has three children in an airplane flying on cloudy day.
2 are three children in a bus riding past Big Ben in London.
3 has pictures of the white house, a soccer game, and English Parliament.

If that's not helpful then where can I find the information.

I thought I'd start posting some lesson material in case people wanted it.

First Grade
Lesson One(4 classes- objectives: assessment, and conversations)

Lesson One deals with greetings, likes/and dislikes, and basic sentence structure.

1st class:

The greetings lesson, I did without any presentation and showed them greetings that were the same, such as "what's up, how are you, what's crackin'," and the like and taught them formal and informal then I went around the room and practiced with the students a greeting. I had all the students stand up  and I told them a fact or lie about me and they would have to say what it was and the student I called on who was right could sit down. This lesson was also reviewing and introductory class about me.

2nd class: Likes and Dislikes

We then did likes and dislikes, objective: students will practice pronunciation, students will practice structure, "Do you like....," teacher will assess students abilitiy to ask questions, I gave them some vocabulary on the powerpoint and we practiced some more.

3rd Class: Transportation, objective: Students will understand, "this is a, these are..."
I showed the students a slide show and I got them to tell me what this is, and these are.. and I gave them vocabulary,  and they had to answer this is a, these are... aloud, then I had them do a word search from armoredpenguin.com. and then I went through the slide and I tested them. I am sorry I don't have the wordsearch but it's really easy to make.

4th Class: Games, objective: assess students sentence formation abilities,

I tested sentence formation abilities by giving them a handout called, "I ride a bike to school."  The students took most of the time writing their sentences and then we played a game called secret sentence in which the students had to guess a sentence I made using vocabulary from the sheet. This was a fun time to goof around with the students  by showing them the sentence on a piece of paper but only in the briefest ways possible such as upside down and and not even stop or between my legs and then gone or flapping the sentence paper paper like a fun while the students begged for me to stop moving the paper around.

*Note: I use Mac and I converted many of the files to ppt. If there is any problems to open them or if they are missing information let me know and I'll try to fix them. Hopefully it won't be a problem.

I've made some improvements to this powerpoint.   I fixed the hyperlink issues.  I deleted the extra slides that weren't really included in the game.  I also added a feature so that the numbers for the questions disappear when you click (using triggers).   It makes it easier to keep track of which questions have been answered.
