Hey guys-

So this is a group of worksheets that I used for Grade 3, Lesson 2. I got the idea from a post on this board and then made the supplemental stuff.

Basically, there are five different versions of a week-long calendar, each with two different "free" days. The students have to go around "making dates", asking things like "Can you go to the movies with me on Sunday?" and the partner checks their schedule. If they're free, they make a date, if not, they have to say "I'd love to, but I can't" and try again.

The other stuff at the end of the ppt are different "ailments" for the "I'd suggest you..." part of the lesson. I cut them out and taped them on the students' backs and had them collect suggestions to try to guess what their problem was. I can't remember who posted that idea on this board, but it worked really well! Thanks!

Is this correct:
Can you go to the movies with me?

Shouldn't it be:
Can you come to the movies with me?

Or do they both work? Maybe I'm nitpicking. Someone, please clarify!

If any Ss don't know the adverbs of frequency, as mine didn't, here's a short Ppt with the translations. A KT did them for me. Nothing new here; I took the templates from Rachael's cool worksheet.

Here is a game to help the student's practice the "I suggest..." phrase. Let me know if you use it and how it goes!

Each group has 6 students, and each student in the group has a piece of paper with 5 pieces of advice (they all get a different list). Using my PPT, I show one problem, and the students have to check their list for the correct piece of advice. The first student who puts their hand up and says the correct piece of advice gets a point for their team. Of course, the team with the most points wins!

Because each student in the group has their own list, it is as if only one student from each of the groups is competing against eachother. I did this to try to ensure that each student is attentive and participating.

There is a brief review at the beginning of the PPT.

Also, I thought that if the game went too fast, you can go back to the problems, and give extra points to groups who came up with original pieces of advice to the problems.

I am attaching the PPT and the papers for the students. Remember, you will have to print out as many copies of the advice as the number of groups you have!

Thomas Orr Grade Middle School Grade 1 Lesson 2 (part b).
1. Teaching time PPt.
2. Daily routine sentences that fade in and disappear. Ss guess the sentences.
3. Grade 5 Elementary School Lesson 6 on daily routines that covers nearly identical material. IMO the kids in early middle school aren't too cool for it yet.

This is 3rd graders lesson 2 part 1 with some of part 2. With each pair of students doing the role play it easily took up the entire class time.

Ive got to start lesson 3 of the Third grade textbook tomorrow, but looking at the target language.... holy crap this is beyond terrible. with lessons 1 and 2 you could at least work with the language there. here though.......it just isn't possible.
"do you remember Minsu?"
"I'm glad to hear that"
"He still remembers the first day when he started learning how to play music" (uhhh redundant sentence much? Theres no need to say the "first" here, it just makes it sound awfully awkward. And I think they mean "play an instrument" here because to "play music" means to play a CD, MP3 or turn on the radio.)
"It was not easy for him to take lessons every day"

I just feel like facepalming at this chapter. It's just so painfully bad and devoid of any useful content

Edit. I threw together a quick powerpoint based on a dialog from the activity book to show how the phrase "do you remember _____" should be used and also gave two different replies. It's as much as I can get from this chapter I'm afraid, its like squeezing blood from a rock.

Hey guys,

I was similarly annoyed by the grammar in this chapter, but here is the activity I did for it..

In the intro of this ppt, I actually used some pictures I took from the fall at our school festival with some of the 3rd graders that had graduated. Do you remember JoonMo playing the guitar? etc etc.

But for most of the lesson, I focused on the movie Memento, and told them about what amnesia is. We also did this worksheet (last slide) for some reading/speaking comprehension. And the link is for the cleanest trailer I could find.

I also attached this other "if we run out of things to do" worksheet with different questions like:
"Do you remember what you ate for lunch on Monday?"
"Do you remember your favorite song last year?"

hello all,
thought i'd post what i have so far for the book. i'm onto lesson 3 now and grade 1 is wretched. i'm thinking for grade 2 i'll have them do a worksheet where they have to guess "what's wrong" with certain facts and then write them correctly and then i'll make a strange vocab ppt with pictures where they have to guess "what does that mean?". not my favorite week in this damn book...

i attached a "supposed to" ppt that someone put up here and i changed to add some what do you like doing on weekends slides and a "how often do you" worksheet.

Ok so for Year 3 Lesson 3 - Part 1 'Do you remember'

Engage - I am planning on playing my class Jack Johnson 'do you remember'. I was thinking about printing out the lyrics with missing words that they have to fill in - or - I was thinking about mixing the lyrics from two songs together (sentence by sentence) so they have to listen and highlight the correct sentences (lyrics)...

Study - focus on the meaning of 'do you remember' and the examples in the song. Maybe do a seperate listening exercise from the textbook...

Activate - I will prepare some questions and get students to do a survey...

Questions like... Do you remember your first day at school?
Do you remember your dreams?
Do you remember the first time you rode a bike?
Do you remember your first day at middle school?
etc etc...

Any thoughts? I am a very new 'teacher' and currently teaching at an all boys middle school. All three grade levels and I am sometimes struggling to get good engaging activate activities - during which the students are using the target langauge... Any lessons specific examples you could give me would be great!

Grade 3 Lesson 2 - Conjunctions.

I was told by my co-teacher that a major focus of Grade 3 Lesson 2 is conjunctions, so I decided to try a conjunction lesson to reinforce her teaching.

This lesson is split into 3 parts

1) Explain conjunctions and play the school house rock video 'Conjunction Junction.' After the video I will give all the students the lyrics to the song and have them circle conjunctions in groups in order to get them thinking about conjunctions.

2) Write a list of conjunctions on the board as well as a sample sentence. Students try to replace the conjunction in the sample sentence with different conjunctions from my list.

3) I give out cards with conjunctions on them and students will make a story with the sentence I provide on the board.

On the topic of 'a bit behind...'. My students are just starting lesson 2 this week, so today I'm still teaching lesson 1. Here are my materials. They're based on the tic-tac-toe game so each grade has an 'acc' file I started with, and then a game file.

I'm also throwing in the tenth grade version because it's jobs/occupations based and might be useful for someone else when they cover that topic.

i have a speaking activity idea for Grade 3 Lesson 3. i just came up with it, let me know what you guys think... maybe how to improve it or tweak it.

i was thinking... how can i motivate students to make "do you remember" questions

so i thought of an activity called "stump the teacher."

first, i'll have the students write 10 random facts about themselves. i'll then choose random students using the random student selector tool at:

then i'll have that student read off some of their random facts. the other students can write down these facts.

after that, the students try to stump me with their questions, for example: teacher, do you remember what Jun hee's favorite food is? teacher, do you remember where mingu went for winter vacation?

if a student can stump me, i reward them with a stamp. (i have a stamp policy)

what do you guys think?

Here is a game that uses the "Do you remember...?" question over and over!

It's a memory game where the students look at a picture for a while, then are asked a question about it. Get the students to read the question, so they are practicing. They can decide as a group what the correct answer is, and and points are given to make it more competitive. I think it'll be a fun way for them to learn this phrase. Check it out!
