Grade 3 Lesson 1 - Hello, I'm Bora

   Hopefully an admin can shuffle this to wherever it will end up once a new index is made for each prominent publisher...
   I made a powerpoint (my very first ever, so I apologize in advance if it's not awesome) to help introduce the new vocab (hi, hello, I'm ____, goodbye) and the new characters (Bandi [book's spelling, I would have made it 'Bondi'], Tomtom, Bora, et al) for Daegyo's 3rd grade book.  I took the pictures from another post on this site, so I don't want anyone to think I'm claiming that portion as my own work.
   This is intended for Period 1 of Lesson 1 (doesn't introduce 'My name is ____.')  Hope this helps if anyone is in need of a quick intro.

There doesn't seem to be a thread for Grade 3: Lesson 1 "Hello, I'm Bora". Or maybe I'm just being blind. Here's a game I made using the Ghostbusters bomb game template.

I know that some schools are asking for some lesson plans, so here's one from that unit that can be tweaked and submitted.

Rock-paper-scissors (RPS) game! 

-Have your students all stand up, before they start playing they must say "Hello, I'm ____" and respond the same way. (they do this before every round)   The loser of the first round becomes a cheerleader for the person that won, the winner goes on to play another person who one and has a cheerleader.  The kid that loses and his/her cheerleader must cheer for the person that beat him. They play the game until there is one winner.  By the end of the game it is very loud, the two kids at the end both have half of the class cheering for them and in the end there is one winner.  I hope this makes sense, the kids absolutely love RPS and his game has them using the target language.

hello, I used a bomb game for Lesson 1. It was the first English lesson I had with them and it worked really well. Thank you for posting the fame. The first day could be very nerve-racking, but it helped them to see that learning English is fun.

This looks pretty good, thanks.

I changed the Bomb PPT game for the Rock Scissor Paper game described above.

I might also try the 'Line Up' game:

- split the class into two teams
- using only the target language ("what's your name / my name is") ask each team to assemble themselves into a line of alphabetical name order.  They must use the target language to determine where their name falls within the alphabet.
- when a team has finished, you move down the line and each student shouts their name, and you verify they're in the correct position.
- the winning team is that with the fewest mistakes!

If the game finishes quickly, you can shuffle the teams around and start again.

EDIT: 3rd grade Ss are not yet confident with the alphabet, so Line Up probably won't work!

What happens if the main computer stops working? This happened to me, and I decided to post this contingency plan in case the same unfortunate circumstance befalls another. It's all in the lesson plan attached, but I'll talk about it in a nutshell:
1. Write target language with Korean translation on board and have students repeat.
2. Have them pass a ball relay style practicing the expression while being timed. (ex: Hi, I'm ____)Have them beat their own time, or have them compete with another classroom.
3. If you have large cards for the characters, you can post and teach. Otherwise, I uploaded a PPT with pictures I took from the PPT on this thread (thanks, BTW. I hope I can use this when the computer starts working)
4. BOOM! I got this idea from the games thread. It's more or less a bomb game minus the computer. Print out the slides from attached PPT (6 to a page) cut, and color some bombs or BOOM! on another piece of paper. Have them play "Pass the ball" but they might get blown up.

I played a simple shout out game for this lesson today.

One student stands up and goes to stand next to another student. I made boys stand next to girls and vice versa. Then I show both students and picture of a character and they have to say "Hi, I'm Spiderman." The fastest student to speak is the winner and gets to sit down and the slowest student is the loser and has to go and stand next to another student.

A very simple game but it worked really well and can easily be adapted for any vocabulary.

Some of these game ideas are genius!
I was worried about what kind of games to play with suck low English Level students. I was afraid that the lessons might become too difficult for them. I will definitely be using a few of these games (Bomb, ABC order, 'Around the World) for my lesson plan next week!

I think this is a nice idea for a game, but if you are using this Dae Gyo book for 3rd grade...the Ss haven't learned the alphabet and phonics until starting the second semester portion of the book.  So, I don't think your game idea is appropriate for the majority of the Ss learning from this book at this grade level.  Just food for thought.  Of course, it's great if your Ss are higher level than what the book is suggesting...but then, your school should be using a different book.. ^^;;

Character Cards for "Talk and Play 2" (Lesson 1, Period 2)

Hey,
I made these cards for the Lesson 1, Period 2 "Talk and Play". There are fifteen pairs of character cards featuring characters from well known children's movies (Buzz, Simba, Lilo), and video games (Mario & friends). The cards can be cut and glued to something thicker so you can reuse them for multiple classes. The cards include a picture of the character, along with the name written in English and Hangeul (some of my third graders can read already, but most of them can't).

hi, i know there are not many activities available for this section
this is an afterschool activity I will be doing with my students
they will color in thier masks and then walk around the class
introducing themselves just something creative for them to do

Here are some lesson plans notes for the 3rd period. I took a PPT from the 1st and 2nd grade thread, and edited it to fit an introduction dialogue.  Great for review/teaching "Nice to meet you(too)". Thanks to the original poster! BTW, "Hello Kitty" is the character I chose to draw for the Draw and Talk portion to model for the kids.
