Textbook or websites for High school students

i have a question for all you teachers out there.  will be leaving my high school shortly.  they have asked me to recommend any English language text books which might be useful for the students.  or at least books which involve common English expressions that are translated from Korean to English... or something of that nature.  i think you get the idea.  English level here among students is nothing too great.  i would say moderate to intermediate at best.  any input is appreciated.

I'm teaching "High School Practical English Conversation." Yeah, if anyone is teaching the same book sharing material would be AMAZING! I've already uploaded what i have for unit 1. I'll post more next week.

You'll be teaching from one of 17 officially approved textbook series. There are also activities books that accompany them, which your school may or may not have ordered. They generally focus on reading, and the listening section is to be done with a CD for a KET to use. The writing components are very formulaic and do not attempt to teach much in the way of real prose. The speaking sections are mostly dialogues. In short, they were not designed with FTs in mind in any way. That said, there is a lot you can still do with them and you can find a lot of supplementary materials to accompany the grammar and topical foci of the textbook chapters.

Hello Everyone,

I teach at high school in Pohang-- boys and girls-- and my school is interested in finding a new textbook for my second graders. It's a private school so they're smart kids and they're English is fairly decent. The last book we used was called Advanced English Conversation and it was absolutely uninteresting. It over utilized CD dialogues. I found it pretty useless since I make the students write their own dialogues. Anyone know of any good conversation books for high school out there? Or even where a good place to look might be? Most books I find are usually elementary or middle school books.

English Communication I and II by Putlack and Cho is designed for first-year uni students but most of it works very well with higher-level HS students. ISBN: 89-7255-792-7 18740. It's also very reasonably priced.

The 1st grade high school students I'm teaching all have a book called "High School English" with a tan cover and a blond man in sepia tones covered with a bunch of postcards all over his suit, and holding a rainbow-toned massive postcard in front of his face.  I have a copy of this textbook and the supplemental activities book, but I've been told by several other Korean English teachers that I'm not to use the book for the classes I teach; I'm to come up with conversation and listening activities to make English fun.  Probably it's just as well, since I do NOT have the CD on which all the listening exercises are based unless I specifically ask to borrow it.

I may still try to make some regular connection to the textbook though, as suggested in another post here, to try to reinforce and build on what the students are already learning rather than try to just plan entirely detached lessons.  Surely there's time during a 50-minute class to teach both textbook-related content and new material I develop?  At least I have plenty of desk time to figure it out...!

I have the same one, but unfortunately I am teaching from it. Does anyone have any experience with this one?

I got to choose my book. I chose Lets Talk 2.

If you get the choice of which book...id definitly recommend this book. Its only 2 easy pages per lesson, which means it gives the basic topic and there is lots of scope for changing/ making your own practice and productive activity. The kids seem to like it

Please can you give a bit more detail on this book, what are the english levels of your students?

I don't have any textbooks for High school. Am all sorted for my middle school classes, but upon asking my high school co-teacher if there're any text books I can work from, he just told me to pick any interesting subjects. Yes he did. I asked if he'd like to see lesson plans every Friday before the week? Nope not necessary.   

What? I insisted and eventually got a 'we'll discuss about it later in the week'. Oy! So I'll be open for any ideas on subjects.

I have these textbooks to for the first time, but I haven't been able to find an effective way to use them yet. I'm hoping to get something concrete to work with by this weekend. I'll keep you updated.

I'm also using this book. Not my most favorite but it works. I'm required to go through the dialogues using the accompanying DVD with them. Once that's over (usually takes about 20 minutes), I can do what I want with the kids.

I also teach the textbook High School 1 to low level second graders.  It's a 50 minute class and for many of the students speaking isn't there thing.  I've spoken to them in the corridors or over lunch and asked them what would make English interesting for you.  Some of the answers included more games and even sing a pop song.  Those are things that I'd like to do at the start of the lesson. 

Making the textbook fun is the next thing on my agenda.  Perhaps, a pass the ball activity to choose who should speak with who.  Or one great idea from another teacher was to buy some chopsticks and ask the students to put their name on them and then when you want to pair students up you can use the sticks.  I also blow up a balloon throw it at them and if it touches or lands near a student then need to stand up and speak on a microphone.

How about a points ppt? The students sit in groups of 8 so if a student participates well then they get to choose a box and behind the box are some points for the group. 

On the other hand, most of the students do 15 hour days at school...no wonder they are exhausted.

yes! i have that one for the 1st graders and for the 2nd graders i have the black guy in tan pants/ orange shirt with a redhead girl smiling. I have cd's for both and an activity book for the 1st grade, but I don't use these since i know some of the teachers already use them during their classes. I was told to follow the book, but of course I incorporate vocab and key expressions as I see fit. I teach mixed level students so it is difficult to gauge if the students don't know their material, or if they are just shy to speak...

How were  you told to teach with the book? What kind of activities have you found to be engaging with the students?

I too am using this book this semester for the third years. Last semester I didn't have one, so it's nice to have some sort of structure. My co-teacher teaches the material out of the book, and I can supplement it as I see fit. I don't have the DVD though...
