Can anyone suggest some good textbooks for 1st and 2nd grade?  My co-teacher has told me to go and purchase new textbooks and figured it would be best to go with the tried and tested.  Thanks, any info would be much appreciated!

My young kids really like the Oxford Let's Go series, including Let's Begin for introduction. They have a lot of really great additions to the series like a beautiful flashcard set and songs the kids love and readers. Plus it's very easy to make a ton of games to go with everything. I highly suggest getting the teacher's edition to go with it which gives tons of recommendations and premade lesson plans.

I did a "I like and I don't like" lesson with my grade 2s. I did the lesson and afterwards I did a game where they must carry candy with a chopstick and drop it into a container on the other side of the classroom. Then they must pick up a card from a pile of cards that I had prepared. The cards have different pictures on them and then the kids must say I like or I don't like when they pick up the card.

It is a race and the first team to have dropped off all the candy wins.

I'm teaching 1graders once a week.
My concerning is how to make them be interested in English.
So I'm looking for fun games or activites in my lesson.
Here is one activity that I did today.

On My Back
Line up the students in two teams and have them face the front. Show an alphabet flashcard to the student at the back of each line and have them use their finger to draw the letter on the back of the student in front. The next student draws on the next student and so on. The student at the front of each line then writes the letter on the board.

They enjoyed it!

This is a blockbusters game (thanks to the person who put up the template!) I used after we had learned about ABCDEF and colors. My class is small so they were in two teams. They really enjoyed this game!
I taught this after-school class last year when I first started and it was really difficult. I kept trying to think up new activities for them to do. This year I only had two types of classes, alphabet based and topic based, and alternated them. We did things in the same order every class and the formats of the games were really similar. Since their class is only once a week they didn't get bored and enjoyed class more because they knew what was happening. I would really recommend if you're teaching alone to make a format you like and stick with it. The difference between this year and last is crazy.

Any tips on how to communicate with 1st graders when they don't understand you and the gestures are falling a little short? I don't have a co-teacher so explaining games by acting them out isn't working properly/

This is fantastic!! Thanks for letting us know about it! I have been given a 1st and 2nd Grade 80 min combined class!!!! And I have no idea what the previous teacher did..so today is the first day for me and this will be handy! I am doing counting using the ice cream cones from www.kizclub.com along with practicing reading and writing the numbers.
Also going to play hopscotch outside with chalk, and the kids can write the numbers in the boxes!!

Paju, An 80 min combined class of 1st and 2nd graders? That's insane. I really wish you luck. I had that everyday during summer camp and although I loved my students and their enthusiasm, their attention span was about 30 mins total. Good luck!

I know how you feel! I really struggle with the little ones too - I think something needs to be done about Grade 1 and 2 and no co-teachers, I have the same issue.

I use an ABC song off youtube ( ) to signal the start of the class, and this got them sitting down and singing, they love it! Then some worksheets or coloring or drawing - with promise of candy for the best one. Maybe a bit of bingo (the prize for a line was a 'high 5' and they loved it!), then a running game or TPR song to finish.

I also found that they liked listening to stories once they were settled, but I'm not sure that would work with 25 kids. My largest class was 15.

You could also print off some board games from toolsforeducators.com - all free but nice and colourful.

Even at this age they love competition, but it often ended in tears!!!

Good luck!

Thanks for this advice. I had my first class of 28 1st / 2nd graders today without a co-teacher. As i'm new to teaching i didn't know what to teach them so took your advice and used songs and colouring and got through the lesson ok. Still very challenging though... i'm sure it'll get easier though once i get used to them and they get used to me

I want to start uploading all the PPTs and things I make, just in case anybody could use them. This is the Introducation and color PPT I used for my first and second graders. I added Korean because my teachers said it would help. At the end of the colors PPT is a video of kids doing the super simple song's color song. IT's hidden but it's right below the picture.

The rainbow song : worked amazingly with the kids. I wish it were longer!

For colours, I found that giving them a sheet of paper, and standing at the whiteboard, asking them to tell me the letters to spell out a colour, sounding them out, actually gets them focused. They are so excited to copy down the words with crayons as I spell them out.

They also love flashcards with pictures of things and being able to yell out the colours to me.

As I didnt have many resources for my first two classes, I also drew animals like monkey, dog, etc and they would yell out the word as soon as they could make out my drawings (not the most amazing, but surprisingly decent enough). They had fun with that. I wonder how much these grade 1s absorbed!
