I have an after-school class with Gr1+2's with no co-T, and this craft making / song-learning class went down really well ... it's good as it reviews colours we've learnt before, plus I put up the completed crafts on the wall outside of the English room to brighten up the passage :-)

I started with the song, taught it to them line by line etc, then sang it through...then moved onto the craft activity - played the song quietly in the background and it's great to see them singing along to themselves while doing the craft :-)

Hope this works for you some of you guys out there.....

This is a food memory game I made for second graders, but it's also appropriate for first graders. It somewhat follows the Gyeongbuk Elementary School English textbook for lesson 3 as well as the song, Are You Hungry? on youtube. There's also a hidden pictures game.

1st Grade Mother's Day
« Reply #402 on: May 24, 2012, 06:19:03 PM »
Students learn about mothers day and the expressions. Its for Cultural Week at my school. Afterwards I made them make a Happy Mother's Day card as a fun art and craft activity.

Perhaps use the Days of the week song that you have taught /will teach them. Assign each student a day of the week. They should begin by all standing up. When they hear their assigned day sit down, and if they hear it again, stand up etc.
Not really a game, but little ones enjoy it.

This is a hidden picture game that practices the alphabet (students choose letters to reveal parts of the picture) and objects. Objects used: pencil, pen, book, notebook, desk, chair, computer, television, cup, ball.

Re: Elementary Grades 1 & 2 Counting and Numbers

Hi everyone,

Here are a couple of links to some games that help reinforce counting and number order.

Counting Fish Game: http://www.abcya.com/counting_fish.htm (This one is eye-catching) good for counting
Apple Picking Game:  http://pbskids.org/curiousgeorge/busyday/apples/.. (number order)

My advice is don't play them for too long...they are good for about 3 min for each one...good if you want to kill some time at the end of a lesson...

The little ones love games and competition but someone always ends up in tears (or a domino of children crying)... any suggestions?

I have been trying to teach my grade 2's ordinal numbers.  I made this mario themed lesson that seemed to go over well.  Next class I am hoping to make balloon racers (If i can remember how) to do races in the class room.  Really drill the difference between the cardinal and ordinal numbers before you start.

I use the 2nd grade Gyeongbuk Textbook and also do other fun lessons. First is a Pororo review powerpoint that covers Lessons 1-3  (Good Morning, Shapes, Foods)  and some other stuff (colors, how are you). Second is a Mario review powerpoint that covers Lessons 1-4 (same as above but with action words and weather). Thanks to whomever created the templates.

I do a lot of games, and I try not to make a big deal out of who wins. I mention it, but then I do a cheer for everyone so that it doesn't seem as important who wins. For example, today after the game we did the firecracker/firework cheer: Pretend to strike a match, put your hands together (ie praying) and make a whoop sound like a firework going up into the sky, then clap your hands for when the firework explodes, and then arc your hands down like the lights falling while making the "ahhh" sound of people watching.  I also do a "high five" run around the classroom right after the game and everyone gets one.

Another way to stop the tears is to make the game students vs. teacher so you can control the outcome (ie they win), and they don't feel as bad if they do happen to lose to the teacher.

Good luck!

I use the Gyeongbuk English textbook for 1st grade. This is a review for lessons 1-3 (Hi, Minsu, Goodbye, Thank You/I'm Sorry), and colors, shapes, weather, how are you, classroom objects, and letters). Thanks to the powerpoint creator!

Here are some materials that go with Gyeongbuk 2nd grade, Lesson 4, "Let's Swing." First is a list of verbs, second is a very basic game with the verbs, and the third is a hidden picture game with 10 of the verbs.

Is there any good games to play for teaching days of the week?

There are some fun songs for this (my personal favorites are the Addams Family theme or the Clementine-themed "There are 7 days, there are 7 days, there are 7 days in a week. Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday"). For games/activities, you could make a matching activity where the students cut out the "Mon" and "day" parts like a puzzle and have to put them together and practice them. There are also some fun interactive games online you could play as a group with you at the computer!

I just wanted to say thanks to everyone who has contributed to this thread!.. I've had the most headaches and the hardest time being creative with my 2-hour 1&2 class.

This advice/material/resource has been gold!

This is a PPT with vocabulary for the letters Qq and Rr. Also an accompanying BAAM game that uses the vocabulary in the PPT. Enjoy!

Hey,

Thanks for all the help on this topic. Find it's really fun teaching the younger kids, I'm just never sure if what I am doing is any good for them, so it's nice to get some ideas and direction from what others are doing! This is for my Kindy class, but sure it can be adapted for gr.1-2.

I have them 4 times a week for 40 minutes. Always start my lessons 3 activities 1. "Hello Song", 2. I ask them how the weather is, and 3. Sing the Phonics song. It's a small class, only 12 kids.

By the end of this week I'll have just finished doing weather and building their counting vocab up from 1-10, so now they can do 1-20.

Next week I'm doing Transport.

First lesson, I'll start with the ppt, going through and seeing what words they know, getting them to listen and repeat, then go through it one more time getting them to try and say the words. Then I'll do the worksheet, saying the words and a number between 10 &20, i.e. Bus 15, and they must find the picture and write in the corresponding number, using this to review the previous weeks lesson.
After that they will be introduced the row row row your boat song, listening, listen and repeat, and then trying to sing it.
Finally finishing off with them writing their names as we have only been doing that for two weeks, and they seem to still  enjoy the novelty of it.

Second lesson, same start, review the ppt., sing row row, then they must listen and draw the words that i say. Then let them listen to row row song, get them to sing it once, teach the actions and do it once or twice more.

Third lesson, same start, then use the picture from the worksheet for a memory game where they must match pairs and say the names of the cards they pick up. Sing row row with actions. Introduce the wheels on the bus and teach the actions.

Fourth lesson is always only songs, so just do songs we have done in previous lessons as well as the ones learnt during the week.

Does this seem OK? Any ideas or comments welcome.
