Jindo Sea-Parting Festival cancelled.
« on: March 09, 2011, 07:50:03 am »
The Jindo Sea-Parting Festival, along with several other local festivals in Jeollanam-do, has been cancelled because of foot-and-mouth disease concerns.

http://briandeutsch.blogspot.com/2011/03/2011-jindo-sea-parting-gwangyang.html

The festival is held each year to mark the outgoing tides that create a 2.8 kilometer path between two islands and allow visitors to walk between them.  The annual phenomenon will still take place, but the surrounding festivities will be cancelled.  Worth passing along since several recent tourism articles are still advertising it.

Also cancelled: the Gwangyang International Apricot Festival, the Gurye Sansuyu Festival, and the Haenam Ddangkkeut Apricot Festival.

Anyone that has been to this before - is it worth it to go just see the sea parting or skip it since the festival is cancelled

It's definitely an experience, but I suppose you'll have to bring your own rubber boots.

Like most Korean festivals it goes by a few different English names, and is often called the Jindo "Moses Miracle."  I loved the comment I got from a reader years ago: "The tide went out! It's a miracle!"

If you don't get around to visiting the island this year I'm sure you won't take the regret to your grave.  But if you're in Korea, make the effort to visit some place rural (I'm not talking Gyeonggi-do) like Jindo or one of the other counties in Jeollanam-do (or in other provinces, too).  Rural Korea isn't "backwater" or foreigner-unfriendly like a lot of Dave's ESL Cafe users will have you believe, but it will show you a side of South Korea worth seeing.

I still know of a ton of people from mokpo going to Jindo next weekend, regardless of the "festivities" being cancelled. I think there will still be some people there selling food and whatnot.

There is an event or two on facebook you could search for, to find info about the sea parting times, but I heard the first one is very early am.

Thank you!
It seems from group information there is a parting from 04.30-06.00 and another around 16.00. Though I can not say how reliable this information is.

One waygook's co has raised the issue that the local people do not want us to attend- does anyone on here work/live in Jindo? what can you tell us..

Does anyone know good places to stay around the area, especially ones that I might persuade to let me keep my dog in for the night. Also recommendations for awesome eating and other interesting sites while in Jindo?

Having been to a few Korean festivals I'm actually not to worried about missing out on the festivities. The soju tents will undoubtedly rear their hands again in the near future. My main concern is the possibility of frustrating the local people..

My co teacher has done some research and she said it is fine to go.
These are the parting times she took from a korean website- it states that the parting begins one hour before the given time until one hour after the give time.

19/03 04.50    17.20
20/03 05.40    17.50
21/03 00.20    18.30

They're really crazy about Jindo dogs in Jindo so I doubt you'll be able to find a place for your dog. A friend of mine who lives in Jindo was dog sitting and he said people would spit or yell at him because the dog he was walking wasn't a Jindo.

I have a dog too so I feel your pain :(
