a simple think of what I am thinking idea will work wonders here.  think of an animal and have them guess the animal.  make sure they use the key sentence "its a ___________".

this is probably too late but for future lesson plans for next year i played a great game with my 3rd graders using realia for lesson 2.  i have a mystery bag that has a question mark on it and i put various things in it like a pen, pencil, paper cup, ruler, candy, etc.  i had one kid come up to the front of class close their eyes and reach into the bag and pull an item out.  when they showed it to the class the whole class has to say "what's this?"  (this was during lesson 3 period 1--before they learned "what's that?")  the student with his eyes still closed has to guess what they're holding by saying "it's a..."  i tried to avoid putting items in the bag that began with a vowel thus prompting an explanation of "a" vs. "an."  frankly i think 3rd grade is too young to start teaching this so i only put items in the bag that began with a consonant.  anyway they really loved it and wanted to play it again.

This is a Hidden Picture game with easy, but slightly difficult to identify objects.  (Be careful when clicking on the letters around the text because the text will pop up.  Click on the edges of those letters.)

This is a cool This vs. That slideshow with the same objects from the Hidden Picture PPT I just posted.  It's awesome!

Here is my opener for this lesson.
I used a few cartoon characters to grab the kiddies attention for a reading/listen + repeat section.

-Kids take turns guessing the words (this section was taken from another poster in this thread, thanks!).

-Basic listening comprehension check. Have all of the students ask you 'What's this?" and you say something like "It's a pen". The students have to look at the screen and display the # that corresponds with a pen.

-Memory/what's missing activity

-Easy reading match-up

-For the activity I'm going to play 'grab and snatch'. My students sit in pairs, so I'll have one student take the cards from the back of his/her book and place them in the middle of the two desks. Students put their hands on their ears and ask you 'What's this?"---- you say "It's a _________' and the students quickly try to snatch the corresponding card. Another listening activity.

I have updated this post in 2013, neatened up some of the slides, removed some mistakes and added bits and pieces here and there.

Unit 1 - It's a ball

LESSON 1

  • Grade 3 - Unit 2 - It’s A Ball - Grammar 1

A simple power point for lesson 1 - showing the use of 'a' and 'an'.
"This is a/an _____"

  • Grade 3 - Unit 2 - Its a ball - Hidden Picture Game

Click the tiles to remove them one - by - one ... click the star to remove them all at once. Students must guess what the hidden picture is using the key grammar "It's a/an ______"/  (Points are displayed by clicking the slide once all the tiles have been removed).

  • Grade 3 - Unit 2 - Its a ball - Whats Missing

A whats missing game i stole from another user in-case i needed a filler (thanks to whoever made this).

  • Grade 3 - Unit 2 - Its a ball - Chase The Vocab

Chase the game adapted to fit with this lesson. For each slide I run through the pictures with the class (listen and repeat / hands up and say the sentence etc). They then have to watch the boxes and remember where each item was. one point for a correct guess. They love this game, every time.

LESSON 2

  • Grade 3 - Unit 2 - It’s A Ball - Grammar 2

Another simple power point, this time for my lesson 2 of unit 2. This one teacher students about the difference between 'this' and 'that'

"What is this? / What is that?"
"It's a/an ________."

  • Grade 3 - Unit 2 - Its a ball - Snakes & Ladders

This is a game template i made. I used the same formatting as popular games (such as Angry Birds - Thanks to the maker of that) to make a simple to use Snakes and Ladders board game.

To move the counters (a soccer ball and a basketball) simply click once to 'pick' them up, and click again to 'drop' them.

Each square on the board has a link to another slide (the question slides). The link is situated along the top of each square (it is invisible). Click the top of a square to go to the question slides (There are 20  different slides - they may come up several times during the game - so don't be surprised if the same questions come up 3 or so times)

On the question slides, click the question box to show the answers. The heart with snake icon that appears will link you back to the main board).

When you 'drop' the balls on the relevant squares (on the main game board) - make sure to drop them near the bottom of the square (if you drop them at the top of the box, the hyper link will activate).

Here's a chase-the-vocab powerpoint for the vocabulary: tv, pen, pencil, ball, book, cup.

Hello,

How do you play chase the vocabulary. When it is on the slide with the purple boxes, how do I reveal the answer for the number they chose. I am having a problem with that. How did you play this game with your students? I don't understand :(

tweety11226,

I had the same problem with the Chase the Vocab ppt.  I figured the game could be played this way:

Before hiding the pictures and shuffling them, ask your students to pick a picture.  When they have, tell them to follow it, and then shout out the number that corresponds once they've been shuffled.

Good luck!

I put together a little video based on the key expressions "What's this" and "It's a _______" and some common classroom items. It's made with xtranormal. My 3G kids really liked it, and I think it works as a nice motivator to start class with.

You can find it attached, or via this youtube link.

Excellent!!! I was hoping someone would have a Gulliver ppt! We have some extra vocab words so I'm going to add some slides to this with the images from the mask file from another post, it also gives me an opportunity to chuck in some more "Hi! My name is (blue tiny person)" "Hello! My name is (green tiny person)". I'll post my modded version after this weekend when I've got it done.

- Also a little excited to throw in a slide about the story of Gulliver's Travels; my CT is doing the 'Around the World' part this time, which I sort of look forward to.

What's this bomb game

The first slides are for practicing vocab.

The game works best with two groups (co-teacher can keep score).

tweety11226,

Before hiding the pictures and shuffling them, ask your students to pick a picture.  When they have, tell them to follow it, and then shout out the number that corresponds once they've been shuffled.

Good luck!

This is how i play it, but with 1 slight addition.
For EASY level (where there are 3 cards/objects) - if they get it right on the 1st go, they get 3 points. If they get it right on the 2nd go, they get 2 points. If they only get it right after clicking on the 3rd card, then 1 point.

For MEDIUM level (where there are 4 cards/objects) - 4 points for getting it right on the 1st go, 3 points for getting it right on the 2nd go, 2 points for getting it right after the 3rd go, 1 point for getting it right on the 4th go.

Same thing for HARD level, but for HARD of course they get 6 points for getting it right on the 1st try, 5 on the 2nd try, 4 on the 3rd try etc.

The reason i give 1 point even on the last go is so that at least everyone ends up with some points by the end of the game

It's a Ball- Review Bomb Games (It's [not] nice/this & that/vocabulary)
« Reply #39 on: March 25, 2013, 07:40:55 PM »
I've altered a wonderful Bomb game I got from this thread and used earlier in the lesson.
(I looked but can't find the author of the game itself.)  I also used some of Al82's photos from his game.

There are two versions here- it's the same material, but my classes whiz through one version so quickly and they're smart enough to remember where the steals and stuff are, so I made a second version with things moved around and a few different questions.
