Thanksgiving Lesson
« on: September 08, 2008, 03:20:02 pm »
Here is a little powerpoint I made. Sorry to those who are not Canadian, it's about Canadian Thanksgiving, but just a few things can be easily changed. I tried to keep it really simple for middle school low levels. I also attached a short cloze activity with pictures (again for low levels, since I have a few really low level classes).

I also might use the vocabulary words and make a word search from any number of those simple wordsearch/puzzle maker websites like this one:

http://www.teach-nology.com/web_tools/word_search/

Hope it's useful!

Thanksgiving Recipes

I did the lesson comparing 추석 to Canadian Thanksgiving and it went well. No one knew what stuffing was, my all time favorite holiday food.  So I'll do this lesson in a few weeks, when Thanksgiving rolls around. The cloze listening test for the video may be a bit difficult, so I'll probably read the script myself after playing the video so they can catch the words. Then I'll leave the slide with the cooking words up, so they can tell me how to make 송편 or any other favorite recipe. I'm also going to make a big bowl of stuffing for them to try. I wonder if they'll like it... 고추장  없어요!

Hi! I made this for an English broadcasting for my school. Maybe it will be useful to someone else too. It has a lot of pictures and its mainly about American Thanksgiving.

Thanksgiving Video
« Reply #5 on: October 12, 2010, 02:45:41 pm »
This is for my afternoon advanced class tomorrow. Yesterday (Oct. 11), was Canada's Thanksgiving Day, so I'm going to show them this cool stop motion video I found on Youtube to introduce two of the main aspects of the day: turkey and pumpkin pie. Figured I'd share it in case any of you U.S. teachers wanted to use it next month.

Hope it works!

Very nice! I made one aboue Canadian Thanksgiving if anyone is interested. It's short. I used it as an intro for my Grade 5 class. We were starting Lesson 10: Do You Want Some More? and I thought it fit well. Enjoy! :)

Turkey Attack and Thanksgiving PPT
« Reply #9 on: October 25, 2011, 03:37:45 pm »
I got these powerpoints from someone, or somewhere, last year. Thought I'd share them as they were an absolute hit with my middle school boys.

I did the Thanksgiving Story and followed it with the Quiz, Turkey Attack. I printed out and cut up turkeys. (if you have time, print in colour, laminate etc. )
Each team had a turkey.
If they won a point, they 'powered up' and I stuck a star next to their turkey.
However, if they lost, I would take a part of the body away. (an eye, the beak, tail).  You know their strange fascination with blood, gore and death - so this well-impressed them!

I've also included a PPT with foods and Crossword, if you need another Thanksgiving lesson.

This is a lesson I did around Chuseok, which compared their holiday with American Thanksgiving.  I didn't get to teach all of my classes this lesson, so I will bring it back in Late November.

I wrote a Thanksgiving Skit and made some simple paper hats for my elementary students to go along with the thanksgiving PPT above (thanks for sharing!) I'm planning to watch a short clip from Adams family movie Thanksgiving skit for inpiration and then reading the script together as a class before taking volunteers for parts and handing out a script for each individual. Then prompt the students through reading the skit as needed. I'll test out the skit next week!

For thanksgiving I made a huge paper turkey and I cut out a bunch of 'feathers' for the turkey.  I'm going to have my kids write what they are thankful for on the feathers and then we'll put it up in my room.  (it's going to be huge!)  After that I'm going to have them make thanksgiving skits about something that goes wrong on thanksgiving.  (the turkey burns, no one comes, etc.)

Thanksgiving Project
« Reply #17 on: November 22, 2011, 09:21:24 am »
Quick and easy project. Only materials needed are blank paper, scissors, and glue. I just used scratch paper. Took maybe 30 minutes. More for the kids that were being creative. I split the class into teams to make a turkey. Each person making one hand. Everything else is self-explanatory.

Thanksgiving lessons and additional ideas
« Reply #18 on: November 22, 2011, 11:44:38 am »
I have attached a ppt and a low level worksheet. Wordsearch can be found on www.boggelsworldesl.com. I also did a google image search for "thanksgiving coloring pages" and just picked a couple I liked, made double sided copies and had the kids chose one to color and cut out. While they were coloring I played Charlie Brown's Thanksgiving.

I am also going to make a ppt how to for cooking mashed potatoes in the rice cooker.  I work at a small school and they allow me to do cooking projects with the students. If you have a rice cooker, its a pretty simple and tasty recipe.  I'll post it as soon as I'm finished.

Happy Thanksgiving!
