"A" sounds speed game
« Reply #180 on: May 25, 2011, 01:01:23 pm »
this is the speed game using the "a" sounds. Students are in groups and have to get as many words as they can within one minute. They may use gestures, words, sentences to explain the words to their group. One person will explain for the whole time and they like it.

If you think you can or can't do a thing - you are probably right.

Support bacteria - they're the only culture some people have.

Phonics Lesson Materials
« Reply #195 on: August 29, 2011, 05:08:04 pm »
Myself and the kids had a great time focussing on phonics at one of my English camps last month. Here are a bunch of the materials that I put together. Some of them are a little rough and could use a bit of touching up. For instance the symbols on the phonics translation sheet as a word doc needed to be overhauled with white out and a felt fine pen. I think there may be a Hangul error of two also. But overall these materials were real successful.

Enjoy!

This phonics activity works like Chinese whispers.  It is good for any three letter word to review.  I was inspired by the Korean Show 'Il Bagi'.  I usually divide a big class into three teams. 2. Call up one team and get them to line up.  3. (T) at one end whispers the phonic sounds of the letters in the word, to the first student.  4.  The student then whispers to the next student.  5.  While this is happening (T) shows the word to the other students which makes them laugh!  6.  The last student then tries to guess the word passed down (with hillarious results).

Reverse Hotseat for Phonics

This game is a simple variation of a popular activity Hotseat. All you need for prep is a miniwhite board which you can buy at any stationary store.  1.  (T) divides (SS) into teams. 2. (T) calls up one (S) to represent team.   3.  (T) writes a letter on the miniboard for (S) to read.  4. (T) writes another letter... (S) calls it out again.  4.  (T) writes final letter... (S) calls it out.  5.  (SS) try to guess the word.  A varient would be for the (T) to write down the letters in a random order for the (S) to read.  The (SS) have to unjumble the letters to make the word.  This activity is best for 3-4 letters in a word.

this is really helpful to start the class off with. also it gets them familiar with the sounds when you do phonetics later on.
