Hello there!

I'm gonna attach some PPt games I play with my 4th graders (Elementary School) these days. However, I started playing this game with my kindergarten kids a couple of years back by asking them to close their eyes while I wrote the words on the white board. They love the idea of Teacher vs Students

How to play:
It's teachers vs students, so just mark a scoreboard on the white board. First to get to 3 points wins the game. This game can take 5, 10, 15 mins to play. Depending on if you want to focus on the sounds of the words, or just use it as a review activity.
So you say each word aloud and the Ss repeat it after you if it IS the correct phonics sound. If it is NOT the correct sound, they should all stay quiet. Even if 1 student says the word, Teacher gets a point.
If they all stay quiet for the bad word, they get a point.
Problems:
It was easy to explain with the help of a co-teacher. But, back when I played it with no teacher, it took a little while and exampling for the Ss to "get it". (But persevere! It's now their favorite game!)
Sometimes they can fight against the student/s who repeats after the wrong word. But this is a perfect time to teach them that "it's just a game" and "it's ok to make mistakes"...a lesson Korean children desperately need. 8)

I've also attached a phonics ABC PPT that I sing at the start of the phonics game. I hope this helps. Please feel free to ask any questions. ;D

Re: Basic Phonics Bomb Game
« Reply #204 on: October 25, 2011, 03:24:54 pm »
I revamped the 'bomb game' for phonics.

It's just a simple quiz testing - Th, Ph, Ch, Sh, Wh, P/B/F, L/R, J/Z.  The kids need to produce the sounds correctly to get the points.

If you have any ideas to improve this please post them here and I'll update it.

[Edit: Just updated it even more!]

Thank you for the post i played this with my third grades and it worked very well... now they undertand how to pronounce the different sounds.

Starting afresh w/ my new set of 3rd graders simply going from A-Z rather than teaching sounds that are similar as in earlier posts.

I still show a slide w/ Letter at the Top, Picture in the Middle and Word on the bottom. I point high, students say name of the letter, I point middle, students say the name of the picture/the word, I point low, students say the sound of the letter.  The more I mix it up, the more fun they have ^^

For my grade 3 students I've been consistent in teaching 5 letters, plus a tongue twister (I 'invent' and create some ridiculous tune for just b/c they like it and it's w/in my personality) after teaching 5 - we review!

Hoo-ray! Here's A-E

Created for my 4th grade students.

Using a PPT from my earlier post..A/E and Sh-Ch PPT from this leads into the A-E-Sh-Ch reveiw.

Also ai, ay, a_e (we did a listening activity w/ the song rain, rain go away. Ss loved it! I gave three teams each a different word rain/away/day - they had to stand when they heard their word then sit the next time they heard the word -- always asking if they can play again and if their team can be rain...ha!)

Also some blends...they were being covered in the text, so I also covered them (sp, sk, sw)

And Silent E (a_e, i_e, o_e, and u_e)

Enjoy

Phonics Flash Cards
« Reply #208 on: October 27, 2011, 04:01:07 pm »
I made a PowerPoint Presentation (2003-07 comp) which the indention of printing out the slides and using them as flashcards. I made 3 slides for every letter in the English alhabet though so I decided against the printing and opted to just keep it in Ppt form.

I would suggest showing 2 slides per sound because 3 ended up taking up quite a bit of time in the classroom.

I'm sure other cards already exist but when I went searching I found it hard to come across already prepared materials ready to print and go, so I'm happy to be posting this here now. Also if anyone has their own cards saved a\in any form please to post as well. Links to sites with nice phonics materials would be appreciated as well. The best I came across only included pictures but once again, nothing which was print and go ready.

EDIT:
So upon conducting a search again I found a useful link to pretty nice looking flashcards via MES English.

Here's a modification of the angry birds game that was posted with short vowel sounds. I've changed the slides to the first 5 consonants, so for example there's bear, cup, dog, fire and gorilla as possible answers. The first slide is a link to the starfall.com alphabet page, as I intend to use their presentation on the consonants as my introduction

Phoneme PPT that's worked well so far. Reviews most phonemes (I've tweaked the usual list a little to make it easier) and gives students the chance to try to sound out words and spell. There are 100+ slides, so if you use it as a little intro/wrap up to class and do 1 phoneme, it will last a semester easily.

There was an angry birds game posted on here for the short vowel sounds that went over really well with my grade 1s and 2s. I modified it for consonants, with one for each group of 5 consonants, except Y. Hope it helps

Vowels for Grade 4/5 (mini lessons on each, comprehensive review)
« Reply #213 on: January 19, 2012, 07:43:51 pm »
Included here are ppts that I made on all five vowels, which explain to students the differences between the sounds of long and short vowels. I've done this by giving them a word, with a picture, and then changing the word to make it short (if it was long) or long (if it was short). This way the students can see how vowels work together to change the sound of the word. (Of course, there are numerous exceptions, but for elementary students we don't want to confuse them with this just yet.)

I hope you can use this in your classroom.

My mentor teacher introduced me to Jolly Phonics which Mello-D mentioned above. I've been using Jolly Phonics, and it's really helpful because the letters of the alphabet are not in alphabetical order, but in an order to help kids to start reading simple words through phonetics. For example, the first couple of letters of Jolly Phonics is T, A, M, R, S, I, and C. The kids learn the phonetics, so they can use their noodles to spell out words like "cat", "sat", "rat", "mat", "sit", etc.

Here is a video that I found about Jolly Phonics:

Last year I used a book called "Phonics Star" with my schools. Overall it's pretty good. The work book comes with a CD so any homework given was a listening one.

Here are some material I made over the course of the term. I hope they are useful. You should be able to copy the pictures from the flash cards file to modify any of the associated games.

Absolutely best song to go with any basic phonics lesson: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BELlZKpi1Zs
and they'll love it.
