The book you use should depend  on their level.   You may want to do a few informal assessments first and definitely ask your coteachers what they think.  My students are really low.  I'm using a book called First Choice by Ken Wilson and Thomas Healy.  I like it because it's at their level,it incorporates conversation practice, vocabulary and grammar,  but also the subject matter is appropriate for their ages.  It can be very challenging to  find material that is both low-level and grade-level appropriate.  Interchange is good too, but you have to purchase a separate CD to get all the audio tracks.  Actually, I think might have to  do that with First Choice too.  I was lucky.  My school had a copy laying around and both the CD-Rom and the CD audio were already around.

I think your ideas are awesome. Food and restaurant themes seem to always work in my class. Thanks for that! I'm having some trouble getting students to talk in class. However, I'm sure these ideas will help. Thanks again!

HIGH SCHOOL ENGLISH Chapter 8 Topic 1 "Going on a Trip"
« Reply #43 on: September 26, 2011, 12:06:44 PM »
Hi,

I've attached HIGH SCHOOL ENGLISH CHAPTER 8 TOPIC 1 "Going on a Trip"
Main Lesson PPT
Jeopardy PPT
Worksheets

I'm required to teach the listening/speaking sections ("Listen In & Speak Out"- Topics 1 and 2) and part of the "Language Focus" of the HIGH SCHOOL ENGLISH and HIGH SCHOOL ENGLISH 1 textbooks to mixed-level classes. So, for those of you who have a bit more freedom, they may seem a little boring. Feel free to adjust them to your needs!

Does anyone use the third one "High School English Reading and Writing"? I've been asked to create an after school reading and writing course for the "best of the best" (as the co-teacher puts it) at a high school, and I was wondering if that book would be suitable.

I was thinking of asking here since people here use textbooks. A quick reply is cool.
Anyway, I was told I could use a text or just go with plain old lesson planning on my own. I need to make a decision quickly. Anyone do both and can give me quick advice?

User "kindenglishteacher" seems to use both a book and make his own supplementary lessons. All his lessons are grouped together in a stickied thread ont he high school board, so you can find him and his materials easily, to get some ideas.

Kind English teacher,

My students use that same book along with the second grade version in the middle of Matt in Korea's post.  How is the book used to teach English in your school?  Do you use it  for lessons ever?  Do you use the activities book that goes with it.  The level of those books is too high for the students at my school.  What about you?  Sometimes I wonder who the district people have in mind when they pick these books.

Hi, Driver 8

Sorry for the delay in responding to the questions.  I must admit that I don't check into waygook as often as I should!

My co-Ts use the textbooks, activities book and a reading text book for their classes.  I only use the books as shown from the scanned textbook covers.  What I do is design a lesson from the speaking topic pages only.  The lesson is either based on the theme or the theme and the expressions in the book or just the expressions.  I adjust the activities and language for my high, middle, and low level classes.  I found that my low level classes can manage the expressions that the high level classes learn if I take them step by step like a building block and do repetition drills.  Low level classes look for patterns to repeat and follow.  They don't subsitute well unless they have a format to follow.

Do most schools provide the textbooks. I'm starting a position this spring and I'm just wondering if I'll be expected to teach straight from a text book or come up with my own lesson plans.

If you are required to teach out of a text, it will be provided to you and the students should all have their own copies. Many high schools prefer the Native Teacher's class to be "conversation" oriented, and away fromt he text. That means creating your own materials. I would suggest, either way to have at very least an introduction lesson plus one more topic prepared before you arrive. Text or not, your classes should try to encourage as much speaking as possible. I recommend staying away from grammar lessons, unless you keep the explanation very simple, and use it to practice a key phrase of some kind. Take a look through the High School Master List for topic an acticity ideas. Also, the "I'm a new teacher" thread may be helpful to you. Good luck!

The textbook we use for our first-graders is horribly outdated, and I'd like to suggest another book. Anyone use one they think is quite good or at least not bad? The classes are mixed levels, and the students are all girls.

For those that use one of the SMOE-recommended textbooks (I believe they're all Korean with generic names like High School English), how do you like them? Specifically, how are the listening files, do they feature speakers that sound natural? Our second-graders used one of those High School English books and the voice actors had terrible intonation, unnatural pronunciation, and sometimes made grammatical mistakes. I cringed everytime I played the listening files.

Also, is the target language natural or contrived? Again, my experience using one of those books was contrived, unnatural dialogues. Oh yeah, and the students hated the books. I'm hoping to find something level-appropriate for them that is decent at worst and that may spark their interest and motivate them at best. From my experiece as a language learner, a good foreign language textbook can make a world of difference.

I'm also unable to access this link. I tried the other two also and I couldn't get into them. It said that they were either non-existent or they were off limits to me. Any recommendations?
