The English "XP" bar!! (a cool motivation + reward system)
« on: March 22, 2011, 01:35:21 pm »
Hey guys. This is just something I put together today for my after-school students. It's a simple concept: give every student a Level 1 card (laminate them!) at the beginning of the class. Have them write their name in the box. Put stickers (or stars/checks/whatever) in each box when a student wins a game, participates in class, or in whatever way you wish in order to motivate your students.

When they level up, you give them the Level 2 card. Students will have to keep their own cards. All you do is provide the stickers/stars/etc. for their leveling up. With each level up you could give them reward (as you wish). I included the printable form on .doc's too.

Pictures on the cards are from Warcraft. I was inspired by the idea from something I saw on here several months ago. Unfortunately I can't find the topic at the moment in order to give that person credit.

Did your students actually remember to bring these? Even with a reward at the end, most of my students forget things like stamp sheets for winter camp.

I haven't started it yet, but I only plan on doing it for my 20 after-school students. I suppose I could just collect them and keep them myself (distributing them every day), but I think once things get going and they realize there are nice prizes for each level up, they will remember to keep it ;).

I'm doing this for middle school boys though, so maybe if you have Elementary you should collect and distribute? *shrug*

My kids keep their books for every class, so surely they can keep and bring one thing that I give them.

This is superb, thanks!

I'm in an elementary school and will use this, just get them to stick it in the front of their books.

I use this sytem on my 5th graders. Now in certain classes 100% of them are doing their homework or atleast bringing their notebook, pencil and paper.  They are also participating more to get points on the board. The points on the board are by group and determines who leaves first.

haha good luck with that!! Seriously though- this is a great idea! Especially if you have boys, I think once they get used to it they'll love it. Heck you could even implement their levels in class- if two want to volunteer for the same something, have them whip out their cards and whoever is a higher level wins first go. (then obviously let the second one go after  ;) )

I have a (very different) rewards system as well and my middle schoolers work really well with it. (I award 'english tokens', and then they can redeem them from me two at a time for a go in my 'bag of wonders'- candy, jellies, chocolates, pencils, erasers, american pennies- erasers are a big hit with them!)

Cool idea! I was trying to think of more ways of implementing the levels in class. I think this is a good one. Maybe designing groups based on mixed levels too? The highest levels in the class have to be in different groups perhaps.

Ive been doing this for two weeks now. I was worried they would all lose their sheets so I had them GLUE them inside their textbooks. Guess what? They always forget their textbooks. I fucking tell them 3 times every class and get my COT to tell them in korean but a week goes by and they forget.

If they don't remember their books then they sure as hell don't deserve a sticker anyway!

I like the look of this system, and I can see it being useful in some situations.  Definitely like the designs. :)  Kids are so into games, I can see this being a fun way to keep up with incentives.

I have a question though: where can I go to get stuff laminated (like, what sorts of places)?  Do they laminate things at stationery stores, or do you usually have that done at your school?  I'm still trying to find out things like laminating and color printing, and I'm at an older public school that has a pretty tight budget so I don't even know if those are options where I teach.  Maybe I'll ask my CT when I get a chance.

This is really neat.

I was thinking of using something like http://www.chorewars.com/ for afterschool so yeah, this is pretty similar. I might even implement a "monster battle" in the form of a quiz at the end of class, and if they get all the answers they earn their experience.

If you are worried about afterschool kids losing their books, how about keeping them in the classroom. Hand them out at the start and collect them at the end. You could ask if your school can pay for them, or just go to daiso/artbox/whatever your stationery store is called and get a bunch for under 5,000 won.

This also adds to the excitement of the first afterschool class, because you're giving them a present. And if you put their names on the books in big letters they will be easier for you to remember.

I've been doing this with my English Club for a couple of week now. There's about 20 kids. I collect their XP sheets at the end of everyday and they grab them out of the pile when they come in.  A few kids have already leveled up (Level 1 = candy) and everyone is pretty into it. Thanks to the original person who had the idea because it's gotten the 6th grade boys interested (which is a challenge).

I'm doing something similar to this, but each level I just give them a prize that is bigger than the last (leaving class early, choosing the game for next class) it is actually working better than I thought.

Do you have budget for the prizes? Or do you just pay out of your own pocket?

HUGE success! I have 36 kids a class so I have teams level up instead of individuals.
I also made a PC-game themed PPT explaining how the system works. I also give each team an HP bar that I knock down whenever they are bad.
I used tons of video game screenshots for the background of this PPT, mostly from Oblivion if anyone knows that game.I made it into a competition between the classes and included a scoreboard!

anyone tried this with starcraft 2 characters yet???

And it looks like most people have used it with elementary school kids.  Anyone try high school boys yet???

I'm keen to try to implement this!  A few resources I've found (although not specifically for gamifying English teaching):

If I come up with any good ideas, I'll likely post them in this thread.  Here's hoping even more people are interested!

A bit outdated but I'll give it a go.

How long did this reward system last / how long does it takes for students to max out the levels?

How did the girls react to the characters?
