Dentist - who has a stronger anesthesia???
« on: August 07, 2011, 09:14:55 PM »
Hello,

I have been going to Boston Park Dental for a root canal and crowns, and I like my dentist a lot, but they simply do not have very strong anesthesia to numb me with!! I am basically in a torture chamber, as they give me a shot inside of my root (extremely painful) and then work on the tooth, it wears off or they suck out part of the root exposing un-numbed parts underneath.. anyhow, it is very difficult to explain, but does anyone know how to get better numbing agents or if anywhere else in Korea has them? in the USA this is not a problem at all.

Please help :( I badly need 2 root canals and 4 crowns, but so far ONE root canal has taken 3 very painful visits (to complete it). I'm not sure how much more torture and pain I can take!

Thank you so much, if anyone has any advice.  :-[

I used Boston too and I was fine. Maybe you just have a very low pain threshold. They also told me that I can and should ask for more novacaine if it's too uncomfortable.

I just went the other day to Tufts Dental in Seoul and had a similar issue. The first shot did not work at all so I requested more and the dentist happily obliged. I've always had to ask for more even in the U.S and once had my wisdom teeth removed and felt everything due to the anesthesia not working. Maybe it just doesn't work well on some of us?

Thanks everyone.. no i really think it is the brands they are using (or type of Novocaine), because in the US i need an extra shot or two, but not 10 that don't really work anyway. maybe i can blame it on "cheap Korea".. this country seems to cut corners on a lot of things here and the quality is reduced. As much as i really love the people at Boston Park.

well, i'm going to just see how it goes. might have to hold my breath as i go into the torture chamber. T_T
but thanks for the feedback.

Root canals just hurt - novocaine or not.

I have had three in 3 different swanky downtown clinics in major cities here and each time they not only numbed my gum but also had to inject straight through the top of the open tooth into the actual nerve pulp they were removing - and it still hurt like hell.  And I made sure I was gettin the stronest suff they could get their hans on.  One guy actually had powdered NC (maybe it was medical coke who knows) and let me dip and rub it on my gums!  Still hurt, bu I felt pretty darn floaty for an hour afterwards.

It just hurts.  Bar being put under, you cannot directly scrape diseased nerve tissue with metal needles and it not hurt, you just can't, local anaesthesia or no.

The net will tell you diffeent if you do a search, but that's so as not to scare you so much you don't bother and end up with a mouth full of gank years later through neglect.

Suck it up, get drunk afterwards as a reward - that's my tactic.  Yeah they tell you not to, but it did me no harm.

My message learned from painful experience as a dental procrastinator is - get it done or it will end up costing more and hurting more in the long run...

haha, thanks Dwae...

they DO hurt.. but i know there is stronger stuff out there.
just trying my hardest not to cry in the chair, but that already happened and will likely happen again.

and i've had 3 root canals in the US.. a few painful moments, but nothing compared to the 10+ severely painful moments in Korea (so far).
but yes good advice.. i have to get them done, once i move back to the States, i'm out of money for this sort of thing.
maybe a drink will do me good after :)

Odd question. But what is your hair colour? Redheads have been shown to have a natural immunity to certain types of anaesthetics used in dental and minor surgeries. I know I am one of these cases. I got a bunch of work done by a great dentist (I was 100% covered, so why not?) back home just before I came and we worked through this issue... All this time I thought I was a big *****. Turns out I actually wasn't frozen.

I would try and learn the names of some other anaesthetics commonly used in dental procedures then and check to see if they carry or can use those instead? I wish for the life of me I remembered what was used on me, but it was FAR more potent than your average Novocain and actually made me look like i had a stroke. Needless to say I felt nothing.

No. I haven't gone to the dentist here. I don't need anymore work done (got it all done in Canada). But back in Canada they used something other than Novocain. It was another type of anaesthetic. Can't for the life of me remember the name. But it did end up working a lot better. (The time to wear off was far longer though. I was done for the day.)

I have had SEVEN root canals done in Korea by two different dentists.  The first one used little to no anesthetic and I had to deal with the pain and the other was/is truly awesome.  Root Canal = Pain,   = Putting hair on your chest, as well.  Man up, take a big swig of soju and let them get to work.  The less you squirm the quicker it will go by.  Think about it this way.  Your pain tolerance will be increased.  I am now not afraid of surgery.  I reached a degree of pain that I think was the maximum output for one area, no anesthetic while drilling out a tooth will do that.  Granted the reason he didn't use it is  because when he tried the first time I almost went into shock from panic.  I don't like not being in control of my body.  ::)

No idea if he's still there - but about 5 years ago, I went to a dentist who had an office in the Seoul Financial Centre in Gwanghwamun. ( I think it was a branch of Ye - not sure though.) He was a pain and phobia specialist, who had trained in the states. Super pricey but worth it. He even gave me anesthetic for my scaling, as I have extremely sensitive gums. I had a lot of work done with him, including root canals, and never felt more than a scratch.
