South Africa / South African Culture
« on: March 24, 2011, 02:35:51 pm »
Unexpected deskwarming led me to make this powerpoint about my home country, South Africa. It's very broad and fairly long so feel free to cut and edit and do with it as you will. It's sort of just FYI for teachers that are curious. It can also be used a foundation for a culture lesson for winter/summer camp and as a gap filler.

I posted some youtube addresses that are relevant to the content in the powerpoint itself. I'm useless at embedding and I couldn't get them to link - sorry! Just copy and paste into your tool bar.

Edit: There is a naughty word on the slide with all the animals in the backyard. It's very small which is why I didn't notice it but please cover it before showing kids, or otherwise download the updated version at the bottom of this thread!

Looks cool! (but my powerpoint 2007 is acting up because I've never updated it, and some images could not be displayed.)
it's very informative!
I also made an SA PPT during my winter deskwarming time! it was intended to be used to introduce myself and my country, but I never ended up using it!
It's tailored to elementary students, and also highlights where I'm from (CT) but there's still alot of general info.
I've been meaning to share it, as I put some effort into it, hope u don't mind me posting it here
cheers

Yours looks good too! Can't believe I forgot the national flower and the good old ZAR.

I just posted the ppt so hopefully the configuration will work out and you can view it nicely on 97-2003

Great PPT, perhaps add some animals too. Good stuff anyway.

I thought about this but decided to steer away from any stereotypes. Can't tell you how many kids have asked me what animal I ride to school :)

Will add it in and update though!

Warning! I didn't realise but there's a bad word on the picture I used on slide 77. It's tiny but cover it up before you show kids...

Sorry

I tried to do a short introduction with my students the first week, and they seemed clueless about anything smaller than 'USA'. many of them had blank faces when I said 'New York' even, that's with my coteach translating. I may try a lesson a bit later in the year though about different english-speaking countries, so thanks for the great ppt!

and also highlights where I'm from (CT) but there's still alot of general info
Where in CT? (my hometown as well!)

Yip, this is usually how my introductory lesson goes:

Teacher: I'm from South Africa
Students: *Blank stare*
Teacher: Where the world cup was last year? Vuvuzela?
Students: Ohhhhh

I don't know what South African teachers did before we had the world cup!

After some helpful suggestions I've updated my PPT to include ZAR, the national animal/bird/flower and some more African animals... I also hid the naughty word on slide 81...

Thank you all for the great posts! Joined and modified some bits from here and there, and also from 'where are you from' thread- BIG thank you to those that contributed!! Its just a super quick ppt for elementary level, missing stuff like the national flower and ZAR..
NOTE slide 32 is of my family, the little ones loved seeing Mommy and Daddy, so just replace those.
