Having to pay 40,000 won for "dinner clubs"
inkblot01:
I was just wondering... is anybody else made to join and pay a monthly fee for a "social club". At my school, I am now required to join two of these dinner clubs and pay $40,000 won a month. One club is for all the staff at the school, the other is just for teachers. So, I get a meal, but half the time I can't eat what's served or have other after-school activities (I'm in dance classes). My teacher tried to get me out of it, but the head teacher says "it's the rules" so I'm not sure if I should try going to a higher authority to explain that I don't want to be forced to spend my money on these clubs. I think if it was optional I wouldn't be so bothered by it but the fact that I'm required to use my paycheck is what is irking me. Any useful advice? Please, nothing like "Welcome to Korea". I've been here for 7 months.

I've been told this fee also goes to teacher's who get married, or lose a relative, or leave the school on top of the dinners which we are supposed to have once a month, but really it's about once every three. I don't eat much of the dinners either being a vegetarian, but I pay it anyway hoping I'll see some of it back one day...

I have to pay 20,000 "membership fee" which i don't mind too much (i would be more bothered if it was 40,000) and i don't eat seafood, so i rarely get my monies worth either.
Personally, i would just pay it and try to go on the dinners that you can. I know it is annoying, but i think making a fuss would cause you more problems in the long run.
Good luck.

Just pay it. I know it's not fair, but just deal with it.....you're at the point of no return. Just look it as a payment to save face. If you back out now, you may be treated differently by other teachers in the long run which may affect desk warming and other little perks. Remember, Korean culture values relationships much more than anything else whether it's fair to you or not. Sure, you could fight it...but is it really worth it?

yeah, my school just asked my to pay 40 000 yesterday for post-vollyball meals... Yeah, for this one i would just pay it and go with the flow..I know that could be annoying but just remember that every other teacher is paying the same amount :)
