^Apparently for the Koreans, it's a dream come true. This is such a great article regarding Korean-Americans. Read it if you guys got time.

Yeah, but they get shot for talking bout homie's muthas in a grocery store.
It is no measure of health to be well-adjusted to a profoundly sick society.

That was a fantastic read. Also, definitely not central to the article, but it was shocking how much the cost of opening a business in New York has increased in 30 years. Or rather, maybe more shocking how low it was only 30 years ago.

Great article. A fairly faithful representation of the stories of many 1st generation Korean parents. Indeed, my parents themselves were members of those immigrating in the 80s. But beyond financial reason, they both wanted to escape a lot of the ills of Korean culture as they perceived it. Regardless of whether I agree with them on the topic of Korean culture, I'm damn proud of them!

I have to say that Koreans are some of the hardest workers in the world.  They seem to work super long hours with no breaks or holidays.

I don't equate hardest working with putting in the most hours. Sure they're at work 10 hours a day 6 days a week, but they're just putting in "face time". I much prefer the American method of working hard when you're at work so you can get the hell out of there and see your family.

hahaha. . . there are some places where they don't bother to put in the "face time" - they just remind the waygook of his contract and get him/her to do all the work while they go home early.

Hmmmm. . . so basically what the article says is that the Korean Americans stick with their own and don't really intermix with American society - and that is their secret to success.  Considering this, I wonder how fair of a shake a white boy like me would get if I applied for a job at an office of a BIG company (say HP) where majority of employees were of Korean descent - something tells me that a different candidate with a more Korean background would get the job.

For me, one part of the "Dream" is that stories like this can keep happening for immigrants from all over the world.  Whether we'll be able to recover and recreate a strong enough economy for that to be the case is the real question.

I think the American dream for the average person in the USA today is to have a job that pays well enough they can take care of their family and not be constantly stressed over debt issues; an added bonus would be affordable healthcare.

The pragmatist in me asks the question with regards to the article, "How much were those Koreans who loaned money to newly arrived Korean immigrants charging in interest?"

After all, it is highly doubtful the new arrivals could have walked into a bank and got a loan.
Lord Buddha please help me, for I am not smart enough to make it dumb enough for them to understand.

At $500,000 to start your own business, I think that will be a huge challenge to jump start the economy.

The new movie Immortals has two lines which speaks volume to the vision and ambitions of America:

"Fight for your employer!"

"War is coming to the heavens."

The current American dream is making enough money to fill up your gas tank so you can afford to go to work to make money to continue filling up your gas tank, so you can continue going to work. Maybe somewhere in there, you have money to pay off student loans, and get some food. Don't think about having a family or buying a house though! Only the billionaires who get 'bailed out' can afford that kind of fancy stuff! Don't worry though! The hundreds of billions of dollars in bail outs WILL trickle down to the rest of the citizens in the USA soon. .... ... ... tick tock tick tock.
