« on: April 04, 2011, 03:41:02 PM »
Hi

Im trying to find out the exact way to change city with EPIK. My co-teachers only new out of college and doesnt have much of an idea.

Some people are saying re-apply but there has to be an easier way.

There has to be a few people who have done this before.

Nothing is easy in Korea - haven't you noticed?

Unfortunately, there is no easier way unless you re-sign with same school. Been there, done that.  Best of luck.

I know if you have been at the same school for five years, you have to switch schools. You don't have to reapply for this. I would like to think that you can change schools without working for five years and not have to reapply either. But I am not sure and I don't make the rules.

If the new city is within the same POE, it's easy. If the new city is in a new POE, you'll have to apply to work in that new province. Unfortunately, in most cases, that means starting from the beginning.

Contact your head coordinator.  It shouldn't be too hard to change cities if you are re-signing a contract.  There are almost always positions to be filled, and if you let your coordinator know I don't think they would mind too much moving you to a different location.

I haven't done so I can't guarantee it, but I suggested to my co-teacher last year that I might like to change schools - same POE, same island in fact - and he seemed to think that wouldn't be a problem, just a matter of form filling for him.  In the end the teacher already there wanted to stay and I decided to stay here for a 3rd year anyway, but if you know where you want to go and that there will be a vacancy, enlist the help of the new school if your co-teacher isn't sure.

same POE, but different city shouldn't be a problem at all.

like a previous poster said, e-mail your coordinator because there's definitely some sort of integration now. this is because the new contract states if you wish to move POEs you have to get a letter of release from your current employer and will receive a settlement allowance of 300,000W when you start your new contract with the new POE. you won't get the renewal bonus, though, and wouldn't be surprised if your salary level doesn't increase as well, although it should since you have X number of years of teaching experience.

Piece of advice: when requesting a city within the same POE, give a very good reason why you want that city.  Chances are, you might be requesting a city that might not have many openings, and most people would want it.  Be as convincing as possible (and honest!).

What's a POE?

I'm thinking if I do another year I want to move from Ulsan to Seoul, and I assumed I'd just have to apply all over again.  What should I look for in my contract to check whether that's true or if there's another way?

How long does the letter of release take and how do you ask for that (from your school or your current POE)?  I'm going to try and go to Seoul since my bf is there along with all my friends and i know a lot of the middle school students randomly around from concerts and from them talking to me on the street :-)

POE = provincial office of education.
based on what you've said an ulsan/seoul move - they are both different POEs. so yes, you would have to reapply through EPIK if you still wanted to work through EPIK. although you could possibly find a different public school job through a recruiter if you tried.
