I did the CELTA in Seoul over four weeks in January 2010.  Highly recommended, and it is recognized in other countries as well.  You can do an intensive course over four weeks in Seoul at a couple of locations, and you can also do it part-time over a couple months.  If you have a long winter break I'd recommend doing the intensive session.  One big benefit to it, as opposed to these online courses run by companies (not really recognized outside of Korea) or even online Master's degrees is that you have a graded teaching practicum.

I also did an online certification in 2009, the same one smores85 is doing.  I didn't find it terribly useful or relevant, but it provides a general overview to teaching.  The CELTA will give you that practicum as well as practical advice for the classroom, though it comes at a much higher cost.

If you look into the CELTA, book your spot a few months in advance as there is a limited number of spaces and they go quickly.

Off-topic, and this opens another discussion, it would probably benefit Korea to operate its own certification program through the government and experienced teachers, especially since public schools and hagwon will recognize these certificates for the pay bump.  Rather than outsourcing these certificates to online companies---most if not all of which hold no value outside of Korea and impart little or no new or practical information---it could create its own program with information useful to EFL teachers in Korea and Asia.  And it could also earn a little money on the side.

And I've merged this thread with an older one from 2009.

Boom.  You said a mouthful right there.  I couldn't agree more.  Unfortunately, it has zero chance of happening.

 www.tesolonline.com .

You don't need tutor support. Put about 10 hours into it and you will be ready to take the test.
Could be done easily in a week or less.

I did an online course for 200,000 won last summer/fall.

http://www.koredinco.com/?page_id=34

There are something like 20 modules, and after each one you have a little quiz (sometimes with essay questions).  Each module's readings will take anywhere from 20 minutes to 2 hours, and the tests for each module take 1 minute to nearly an hour, depending on if it's an essay exam.  You have to do one website evaluation per module (takes maybe 20 minutes each), and contribute a couple of postings to the forum per module (takes 10 to 20 minutes each).   I wouldn't say it's necessarily a cake-walk, but you could finish it in about two weeks if you busted your ass, or in a month if you worked on it a little after school each day.

I got the paper.  Did it make me a better teacher?  No.  Did it get me a raise?  No, not this year.  Did it make me more esteemed in the eyes of my colleagues?  No.  But, I have the paper, and maybe I'll stick it on my grad school applications to say that I thought it prudent to try and better myself as a teacher.

I second this one.  Why even bother with others if you're just looking for cheap?  This has got to be the cheapest (accepted by Korean public schools).  It's 100 hours and it got me the pay raise.  Hard to beat 200,000 won.

Basically, it increases your salary 100,000 won a month (or 1.3 million a year counting bonus).  That's 1.1 million won extra per year.
C is for cookie, that's good enough for me.

I just finished the 120 hour tutored certificate with ITTT.  It was a fair price and I know that it is accepted in Korea for the TEFL certificate salary bump.

I took LinguaEdge - I'm not sure if it is highly reputable, but it was sufficient for the salary bump. I loved the value -my tutor gave me thorough feedback, and it wasn't pricy at all!

I also completed the ITTT course last year. Worked as a pay bump and gave me some good ideas for my first elementary school.

I got mine from "I to I" over the summer. I took the 100 hour TEFL and I got the level bump. It was like $350 and worth it. It pays itself off in 1 1/2 months from the raise.

Does anyone know if there's a time to limit to complete the TEFL online course with ITTT?

Is it worth contacting the DMOE for advice about programs that would be accepted? Or will they refer me to a program that costs $1000?

I am currently doing a TEFL course with ITTT.  If you do a course that includes tutor support you have 6 months from the time you submit your first worksheet.

I am not sure about the courses without tutor support.

Hey,

I was wondering if anyone could recommend a good on line TESOL or TEFL certificate.  I'm looking for cheap, quick and easy, just to have the paper.

Cheers
Chris

Global TESOL (http://www.globaltesol.com/) offers a good foundation TESOL certification programme, with excellent specialization courses, too.  I have five certificates from them.  Global TESOL is probably not the cheapest around, but they offer good courses and excellent customer service.  Also, all courses can be done on-line or by correspondence.  Good luck!

Online TEFL - which is BEST?
« Reply #95 on: May 24, 2011, 07:20:14 pm »
Hi, I am going to do a 120h online TEFL. But, I have to choose one first...

I have researched online, and also through many waygook.org threads and seen many opinions and links. I do not want to do the CELTA.

Which online TEFL do you think is BEST though? The main ones i have looked at are teflonline.com and onlinetefl.com.

Does anyone feel strongly towards a certain one or have advice when choosing one?

Thanks.

Well the best would be one backed by a known university right? So CELTA or Trinity TESOL. But those aren't online.

None of the strictly online ones are accredited. This is a fact simply because there is no such board to accredit them. As such, its doubtful anyone here has done more than one course, because well, an online course is just there to raise your pay level for most people; comparison thus becomes impossible. Actually, I lie, there was this one guy online who was undertaking them all and rating them for fun, but sadly I've lost the link to his blog. He was brutal though.

As you're specifically after an online course, I'd be asking people to rate the ones they did in terms of specific matters of convenience then. So whether a specific one had a convenient schedule, whether they were prompt with returning assessments, whether the course notes would pass an MS Word spellcheck, whether the feedback was useful, how professional they were, and what portion they felt was actually applicable once they got in the classroom.

Personally, the online garbage I did ticked off only one of those categories (feedback, but their assessors were all casual hires so the staff may have rotated by now), so adding it would be futile.

I know there are some that are accredited by gov't (I think because they are in cooperation with universities). I am not familiar with these ones off the top of my head.

Stay away from ITTT.  They are an awful company with the poorest of customer service.  Buyer beware!

Type this into the search function please.  You will find someone asks this about every month.  No one can tell you what is the BEST, because I highly doubt anyone has taken two different courses.
