surge protectors for 3 prong grounded computer ac adapter

Lemyn216:
Just wondering if anyone knows where I can get a surge protector for a 3 prong usa plug around Seoul.
It is for my nettop.
The AC adapter works for voltage from 110-240 so it should be okay with out a transformer.  Right now I just have it connected to the wall using a cheap adapter so it isn't grounded, is this safe?

Thanks.

For a laptop, I doubt that the grounding is necessary. Though if I were you, I'd go to the big electronics mall in Yongsan (where there has to be one), and buy a grounded adapter anyway, just to be sure. However, now that I think of it, if you're converting from a 3 prong to a 2 prong, wouldn't you be losing the grounding property anyway?

Lemyn216:
Thanks.  I'll check Yongsan.

That's what I figure therefore I wonder if it is safe.  It's not a laptop so that's why the plug is the way it is.  I figure if I can find an american surge protector with grounding properties and then plug the adapter to korean wall outlet, that might work...

I'm guessing your nettop has an external power 'brick'.  The brick has a cable fixed to it which plugs into the nettop.  You also have a disconnectable cable that plugs into the wall and into the brick (this is the mains cable).

If this is the case, if you disconnect the mains cable what kind of socket is on the brick?  Is it a two-pin socket, like a figure-8, or a three-pin socket like a cloverleaf?

If it's a figure-8 you don't need a grounding pin (there would be nothing to connect it to).

If it's a cloverleaf you should have a grounding pin.

Either way, you would be better to buy a new mains cable, with a Korean mains plug at one end and a figure-8 or cloverleaf at the other.  Then you don't need an adaptor (which are a bit wobbly anyway).

I have seen the Korean-to-figure-8 cables in 1000 won shops.  The cloverleaf ones are less common, but easily found at the more specialist stores, especially Yongsan.

Lemyn216:
Thanks Ame.  It's a clover leaf attachment to the power brick.  I was wondering the same thing whether they sell just that part of the plug. I guess I'll bring the last part of the power cable to yongsan and see if they have it.
