Fundraiser

I was thinking to help generate more revenue for the site charge people a bi-yearly or yearly fee of $20 to download any materials from the site.  I believe most people would be happy to pay and contribute as i'm sure this site has helped out many teachers.  on the other hand, if you up-load a certain amount of materials you shouldn't have to pay a fee.

A donation is voluntary, a fee is mandatory. I reckon there would be a massive uproar if people had to start paying here, it's half the reason why it's so popular. I agree that people should donate if they can though.

I completely agree- this site is a wonderful resouce, a saving grace from deskwarming, and a great way to pass info. Definitely worth a voluntary donation. The only reason I haven't donated yet is because my paypal isn't set up properly yet  :-[ (awaiting help from my head co...)

I've been wondering this, and I hope this question can get to the creator of the site. I listen to the "This American Life" podcast a lot and a few times every year Ira Glass comes and says "i don't even know what bandwith is, but it costs a lot of money." And, "if you can donate even a dollar, your covering yourself a few others for the whole year." 20 mb podcast x 365 x a few other people.

1. How many active users are on this site? We had 21 TBs of downloads this month.
2. How much does it cost to actually operate it. Is the $2,500 for yearly bandwith and server costs or monthly costs? Do the ads cover any sizeable portion of that?

And yes, I intend to donate in the next few days (at home and not at my school computer). (here, i'll write a note now). Actually, I might even suggest a Wikipedia style donate campaign (remember a few months ago when Jimmy Wales put his face on the main page with his personal plea. Well, it got people to donate. This site saves me hours and hours of time. It's obviously worth the 10 bucks or 20 bucks I'd send in.

edit: I saw this just now:
http://waygook.org/index.php/topic,1572.0.html
summary to save some bandwith:   site has seen a huge growth, the ads bring in a few cents per click. "Arsalan," the web programmer, pays server costs himself. If that's not a reason to make you donate, I don't know what is.

How about we put together some kind of fundraiser so we can all keep this invaluable educational and social forum up and running.
How much does it cost to keep this place running per year? I think sharing that information would be a great starting point for such an effort.

I, and I'm sure many others, would willingly pay a subscription charge if needs be. Many new teachers are relying on this site to get them through the first couple of weeks.

Even those here a while sometimes draw a blank and need sites like this for a bit of inspiration...

I think that is a great idea. If you look up near the top of the page, there is a ChipIn. I assume those donations are also being applied to Waygook. However, other efforts should help out too.

How can I "chip in" if I dont have a credit card for pay pal? Maybe there should be some Korean bank account we could send the money to for those who dont use paypal or have a credit card.

You don't have to have paypal setup to use ChipIn. Just pay as a paypal guest and you're good to go!

Same. I'd send over some won if there was a Korean bank account listed, but can't use paypal..

Does  it still require a credit card? Or can we use regular band debit cards? I assume it would not take a Korea KB card. If this is true, I think having a Korean bank account set up would generate a lot more money for the website. Hopefully a mod notices this and we are able to set it up.

A fundraiser event could be fun, I'm sure it could generate some quick cash for the site.

What about using bit torrent for things like the game template mega pack? If there was a peer to peer option it could cut down on bandwidth been leeched directly from the site.

Dropbox is a good service too. I think the public folders get 10GB of use a day in free accounts before they get flagged for too much use.

Also have a stressed credit card, but if given Korean bank info could send some cash.

Hello fellow waygooks!  :)  I understand everyone's concern, but the measures put in today were to help alleviate "leeching" by people who register, and decide to download everything over the course of a couple of nights.  That seems to have been what happened.

Quite honestly, this strategy was suggested to me before, but we didn't have too much of an issue.  Typical bandwidth usage per month is roughly 2.5TB (yes, I know, it's a lot for a teaching forum).  Cost on a monthly basis is about 250US$ per month (until I upgrade the server down the line), and that's if we use the allotted bandwidth and not any more.  Now, imagine the cost of 2.5TB, and that we had in the past week reached a little under 25TB.  I had to count the digits to be sure I was reading it right, but that's enormous.

I started the site as a teacher, and I would pay basic hosting fees, which were something like 20$ a month.  I don't think I would have been able to afford it otherwise back then.  We now have 11k users, and on a daily basis about 500 active users logged onto the site at any point.  I think if the server could handle more it would be even bigger.  Seems like many people find it useful, and I don't want that to change.

I don't like the idea of asking teachers for a "fee".  I was one at one point, and I know how little really I could afford with student loans to pay off, etc...   So a donation box is at the top of the site for anyone who wishes to contribute to the "basic hosting" fees.  I had a different donation box there before, so what you see there right now amounts to about 10 months instead of 12, but that's simply due to what I already counted in from the previous donations.  Google add sense revenues are really helpful with making up the difference with going over our bandwidth purchases every month, and any planned upgrades.

Personally I'm ok with having the site pay for itself.  So long as the community of teachers benefit, and we can avoid abusive downloaders, which is the reason for the 5 post requirement for downloads.  I hope everyone is ok with that?

Several people have asked about Korean bank account fund transfers, but I think it would be tricky(considering I don't have an account).  If you really want to contribute financially, and don't have a pay-pal account, I would suggest visiting the sponsor advertisements (if it's something of interest to you) anytime possible.

Other than that, hope everyone is well and still find things running fairly smoothly.  I do know I have to make some major upgrades, and that's coming somewhere down the road! promise :)

This may or may not be far-fetched, but I thought of it last night. Anybody else interested in having a meet-up? Buy Arsalan a beer and throw him 10 bucks. It's not a long-term game solver like a Korean bank account would be (though difficult with an E2), but it would definitely be fun.

Fundraiser ideas (I am joking, so DON'T take this seriously. I am bored and am tossing ideas together with things I hear a lot.)

1) Topless white-male teachers with six-pack car wash.

2) Dinner with your teacher auction.

3) "Buy me a toast" waygook fundraiser, sponsored by Isac toast.

4) Kimchi-scout cookies.

5) Touch the black girl's hair for 1,000 won.

6) Book about "How to make your head look small"

7) Shiny skin-care creme

8) Big Bang sponsorship

9) 101 ways to fix things with duct-tape seminar

10) Quick repair skirt and heel kits.

win to you.

In seriousness though, I think a fundraiser event would be great but probably too difficult to organize for a site like this. sure, Korea's a small country, but we are spread all over and even if it's not with school our time is pretty occupied :D

Of course, I'm sure people could do their own mini-fundraiser events. Say, out to a night of drinking, and whatever the tab is, have everybody fork over 30% extra, and that gets passed on to Waygook... who knows the sort of private fundraisers small groups could hold?

This is definitely the best site for lesson plans, however if the fees go up many people will ignore it before they know what is actually here, I would have done and gone to another site that was free. Saying if people can post lessons here they can join for free is inviting a host of crap, most of whats on here is good and posted here after being tested and modified. I would be embaressed to post a bad lesson. If i was saving 20$ i would care less about that and so would many others i believe.
