Check out "EPIK Spring 2011". Basically all new EPIK teacher's accross Korea that just got here in February.

Also try any "EPIK" group on Facebook, there are loads.

Type "Gwangju" in the search box and you'll find a page for the city. There is over 1,400 ppl who 'like' this, so there's got to be at least one in the bunch that you can meet up with in the city.

Hope it helps.

My best Korean friend lives in Gwangju.   His name is Mr. Pak and he works as a sales manager at KT.   So if you need an iPhone, internet service, or other telecommunication services, he's the guy to talk to.    His number is 010-9842-0002.   You will have very few problems speaking English with him.

I can empathize - I am in smaller town here in Korea andthere are a lot of Native English teachers here - I have some friends, but I would like to make some friends in other towns.

I think my main challenge is that most of the teachers in yeoju, are anywhere from 15 years to 5 years my junior... kind of makes it hard to connect with people and make friends here.

I got my party girl out of my system a few years ago - so now I'm just a boring old straight person who likes coffee, good food, glasses of wine, and food, and oh yah, I'm geek girl - I miss my geeky friends back home...cause I am kind of a fish out of water here...

and for the record, I love star wars, and am a huge sci/fi nut :) and I also like rp's paper and online, and comic books and anime, the list goes on - ... you get the idea...anyway - hi - :)

I'm feeling this post big time! Too old, too boring, too geeky, LOL.

Anyway, no where near Gwangju, but I'm sure you can find some people :)

Let's see, too old-ish, too boring, too geeky.... yep, yep, yep... I'm also a Star Wars fan (and Firefly fan, for the record), but I don't think too many of the foreigners in town (Siheung) are interested in that sort of thing.  Then again, I might be surprised and some of them might actually enjoy playing things like Catan, etc. if I'd just ask.

Sorry you're having a rough time connecting though, Hallam.  I managed to meet some cool people at an English/Korean church but it's over an hour away from where I live.  Since I didn't get an orientation though it has been challenging.  I'm sure you'll find something, and Facebook really can be helpful.  All the best in your search.

My name is Erik Hedin and I am from Minnesota, USA. I completely understand the feelings all of you are having. I have been living in Korea since December 2009. I am a pretty geeky guy myself. I enjoy useless trivia, video games, Star Wars, RPG's (paper & pencil, video game), comic books, anime, sci-fi, fantasy, etc. if you require proof look at my facebook profiles (one has a pikachu being hit in the face by a pokeball and one has a Family guy Star Wars poster).

I have two Korean friends, one who I contact regularly. Otherwise I rely on local foreigners here in Suncheon, Jeollanam-do. Unfortunately that means I am required to go to the main hangout which happens to be a bar that allows smoking. I don't mind bars, but the bar can become overcrowded quickly and when most of the customers smoke (foreign and Korean) and the blast the music it becomes very uncomfortable to me.

I would love to meet more people here in Korea that share my interests and I am completely surprised by all of my fellow geeks here. I have met many movie geeks, but not full-blown geeks like myself and it would be nice to do so. If anyone lives close to the Suncheon area (I can also get to Gwangju or Yeosu easily) let me know. I am on Facebook.

Also Hallam, I would be willing to be your friend as well. I even sent you a facebook request.

Not to turn this into a race thread or anything but it IS a lonely place here for a foreigner especially if you are in a more traditional/conservative city outside of Seoul or Busan. But imagine being a Black woman here. I omit Black men because at least there are more portrayals of Black men here than Black women. It is f!@#$ing lonely as can be. Yes, I have found some friends but I am introverted and also kind of more mature than many people my age (I am 25) plus I am an eccentric artist which makes it even worse because I am non-conformist in many ways, for example towards pop culture. I have learned to want to do more things on my own and now I rather do things on my own most of the times (or with a boyfriend if I had one  :P) .

But even when I am not so introverted and try to be social, I had to go to Seoul to find my social circle. Damn shame. I live in Daejeon. I only found a couple of Black females here with the same interests as me which is better than none. But the other expats are into things I am not interested in and they are more into "touristy" type things or waygook bars where everyone gets drunk and make foreigners look bad. I just wanna find my niche and my niche lies in Seoul. I love shopping, I love the art scene, I love indie films, and I love kawaii culture!  ;) Therefore, if I stay another year, I am packing my bags and getting the heck away from Daejeon!

I miss geeky people - all my friends are full blown geeks at home -
I haven't many here - I'm about 5 hours away from Gwangju - so if I come any where south - I have to plan for it well in advance - probably takes you that long to get to Seoul - :)

We'll have to meet sometime - in the mean time - I'll message you with my email address you can find me that way : )

@Cellar door: While I do not play a whole lot of games I do like the Star Wars films and I live near you. Maybe we share other interests :-)

Just PM me if you're interested in making a new friend locally :-D

Man, I'm such a nerd, it's awesome. In the last two months I've dumped over 140 hours into a JRPG. And I read books about dragons. And I just discovered a cool place to buy Gundam toys. Mraawwww nerds.

But I'm a total closet nerd aside from with my closest friends.

Hey,

My wife and I also live in Gwangju.  We have a small, but growing group of friends.  If you'd like to go on a day trip or pub sometime we can get you some details.  Another good way to meet people in Gwangju is the monthly foreigner dinners hosted by Say Kimchi Recruiting the next one is the 23rd I think.  They have a facebook page and here's their website http://saykimchirecruiting.com/newsletter/  .  If you don't mind some logistical questions: where do you live? what hours do you work? What do you like doing for fun?

Hope everything works out well for you...

If any of the people posting here happen to live in the Incheon (or Bucheon) there is a foreigner trivia night every Thursday at Goose Goose pub (near exit 21 of the Bupyeong underground market). It's run by a really decent guy named Brad who is VERY welcoming to new players. Brad even got a special deal on drinks, so come on out and meet new people. Plus, if you win you can ask all the super geeky Star Wars questions you want! PM me if you need directions (I am a very sociable lad and very willing to help). Also, I know that Roofers pub in Itaewon has a trivia night too.

P.S. I do not run this Trivia night, I am just trying to help!

Hey Wafflebunny,
I am also going to through the same thing. I am also black female that is 23 yrs going on to 24. I also struggle with finding my niche , here. I am also in to the art scene especially photography. My friend used to live in Daejeon but she left Korea several months ago. Maybe we can meet up sometime.
