Is it too early to buy a summer vacation ticket to the US?
« on: April 11, 2011, 06:32:30 PM »
I'm looking to visit the US (Boston) with my girlfriend this summer.

I'm wondering when is a good time to buy a ticket.  The prices on Korean websites aren't all that much better; we've tried a number of them (the ones that have better prices than US websites have ridiculous layovers).

I've seen the prices fluctuating, but right now I'm seeing $1583 on US Airways (actually operated by United, as much as I dislike them, I'll still fly them).  It's for the last week of July/first week of August (2 weeks).

Should I wait, or should I buy now? I have seen higher prices, about $200 more, in the past few weeks.

I am also planning to go back home (Texas) during this time. I thinking it would be better the earlier you buy.  Would love to heard advice from other people as I have yet bought a ticket.

Usually 3 or months is the time frame i use to buy my flights. For trips back to America, I found it best to fly to San Francisco with one of the Asian airlines and then use a domestic carrier (ex. Southwest) to fly to Houston. Most times, Singaporeair and Asiana offered the cheapest flights to San Francisco. Just my 2 cents.

Keep in mind im traveling to Incheon airport from Busan...

I would buy ASAP. The only thing that would make your trip cheaper is to check with all of the ticketing websites. I think whypaymore.co.kr is good if you can handle the Korean. Also, I've found AA to be OK with direct flights. I think you could fly direct from Boston to JFK.

I don't recommend you to do that~
Usually the school schedule will be changed.
You had better wait until one month before the summer vacation starts.

I agree with gini if you're a PS teacher. Not sure what your schedule is like but the PS system usually notifies you pretty late.

Hmm.

I am a PS teacher.

I was told when my vacation is by my co-teacher.  She said it's for the 1st and 2nd week of the school's summer break.   English camp is printed on the school's calendar for the 3rd and 4th week of summer break.

Now I'm a bit worried  ???

However, as far as I know, the vacation is always given consecutively (not broken up) and desk warming is only for the time in excess of the 2 weeks (i.e. one is guaranteed 2 weeks).

Any thoughts?

I'm also looking to fly into Boston or JFK for the 1st 2 weeks of August. Having kept an eye on ticket prices for a while, I'd say buy now rather than later. I'm going to try to buy mine this week if I can.

I'm also a PS teacher, but I've arranged it with my CT and I'm just going to trust her on it. My school is pretty relaxed about these things.

Also, I have a rather unique ticket situation that may require a travel agent. Can anyone recommend one? I live near Seoul/Bundang.

My Korean boyfriend and I will be flying home together, but I will stay a week longer than he will. Of course we want to sit next to each other on the flight over, but trying to buy tickets going together and separately for return is something I just don't know how to do!

agreed. Schools/district camps have a tendency to change their camp dates and if you`ve bought a non refundable/changeable ticket you could be screwed.

for those of you thinking about booking early, refer to this post ...you might end up with a useless ticket.

You've flown before, right?  It doesn't matter where or how you book tickets.  Seat allocation is done at check-in.  Be at the airport nice and early and they'll seat you wherever you ask.

Have you flown much? Many airlines allow the pax to pick seats at the time of booking. KAL, JAL, Thai, Air Asia (for a fee) and Cathay Pacific...

Edit: Cathay Pacific allows one to pick seats 48 hours before the flight (online).

The Ks once gave me five minutes notice. I didn't know what to do with the extra time.
